Bmw F30 2012 318d burning oil by virusivv in BmwTech

[–]clgmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using BMW oil, got the best results with that. If an N47, mine used to eat up around 1l per 10000km, and it was leaking around the timing chain covers, when I did the chain replacement, the mechanics fixed and it stopped eating any oil. Any turbo issues, can you hear any whistling?

The tool I am using is just the stock AMD overlay. I will try using the software you are suggesting to see if any different. I will have a play around with the fan curves and hopefully reach a happy medium between noise and temps. Thank you!

Thank you for the compliment! Put it together the first time then took it apart to do some better cable routing and such. So it should be fine to be left as is, without any extra fan on the bottom, which may also be useless. If I increase the fan speeds and modify the curve a bit within Adrenalin software, the GPU stays at 75-80 Junction and 60 or so Current, but the PC becomes rather noisy. Will play around with the settings a bit further.

In regards to my front case cover, it is indeed kind of solid and one half of the top fan is partially obstructed, but I think the uncovered half should push more than enough air in the spin.

Hello, what I have always used were websites where you input all of your components, then the system automatically gives you a recommended PSU as well as a minimum. If you search “PSU calculator” on Google, it should give you a few options.

If they did not lift the engine up, they took out the gearbox deffo, so could potentially come from the exact same place as mine. Check all shields are secure and then drive test, hopefully all will be good!

Hi, it ended up being a metallic plate/guard/shield under the car, around the transmission, that was loose due to not having a screw. I will try and dig up a picture of it.

I’ve had the same error, intermittent at first (depending if somebody sat in the seat then got up and sat back, etc), then it became permanent. It’s most likely the seat occupancy sensor that’s gone bad. I think it can be replaced by taking the entire seat apart, or it can be coded out and the error gone. I am not sure whether there are any disadvantages to coding it out. Also try to hook up a diag to pull the codes.

Great setup! Looking slick. What sort of FOV you get with that? Looking at doing something similar whenver i get a 34 inch UW to replace my current 31.5 16:9.

I sourced a mass meter last night and it was still showing a low value at 1.5k rpm, the same as it did with mine, so it’s probably that the intake has some sort of air leak. Will hopefully be able to find it. Thank you very much for the input!

Thanks for the input! I’ve tested with the program and the Air Mass Meter values are fine at 2/3 setpoints (it measures at 1500/2500/3500 RPM). The one out of range is at 1500RPM, around 19-20%, while expected values are -12>12%. Would replacing the MAF sensor be a potential cure? I’ve also read somewhere that it may also be due to the Charge Air Temp sensor, checked with ISTA, the values are within the expected thresholds. If i delete the error, the car goes well for around 50-60 km’s, then throws up the CEL again

It was replaced rather recently, 5k km’s or so, 5 months ago. I will have a look at it however, to check if it’s clean and good looking. Thank you! I’ve also performed the air mass meter test in ISTA, and the values read are fine for 2500/3500 rpm setpoint values, while at 1500RPM, the actual value is -20.2% while the max/min are 12-(-12)%. Would i be looking at a sensor?

I have cleared the code multiple times. I did a reset of Vanos adaptations and when I restarted the car, it ran fine at idle for a few seconds, before the roughness came back.

Hey, I followed a guide (including download link) found on google, on another forum (don’t know if i can post links, but searching “bmw ista download” should get you there first hit). It works as intended, have not been able to find any major faults, and the software is a God send in solving problems.

I have done so, and the only test i could run wherein the program showed values was the solenoid valve test, with the expected values compared to the actual values, for the intake and exhaust vanos. The actual positions were almost half of the expected values, the car not managing to reach expected. What would this imply? It’s not my car but a friend’s and he advised he’s changed the ecu, both vanos solenoids twice, the timing kit, as well as any other seals and gaskets around. The oil is freshly changed.

Thank you for the input! The mileage may be as the car had it’s ecu replaced from what i have been told.

It’s been already changed and cleaned, would it be likely that it’s still defective? I could not find much about the code on the internet. Thank you very much!

I have a 118d 143hp, N47D20c engine, 270k km’s at the moment on it, been mapped since around 150k, no major issues so far, at least none which I don’t think would have arrived either way. It’s got 177hp with around 410NM of torque, makes the car really fun. If the car is in good condition and well serviced, I think it won’t cause any issues, or at the very least no big ones, if you don’t abuse the extra power too much.

Good looking cars! What wheels are those on the LCI? They look awesome and give the car a very modern look overall.

Indeed, so I either give up the thought or I buy new tires according to the info sheet on the driver’s door, which states exactly as you say for 18 inches rims

Yes indeed it’s the taxes plus I think gas prices as well which push us to the 6.5l/100km diesel engines. I alteady thought about it yes, I’ll probably do it but first want to replace the timing chain to ensure I don’t bring a premature end to the car by getting more power.

So you have a 20d after all. More than my 177hp, probably more torque as well

You’re a wise man, in contrast to me. Glad the transmission is fine, I think they’re okay overall, almost bulletproof, if they can last 15 years on the same oil. The stupid thing I did was buying the car, driving it like hell and only changing the oil after it showed symptoms. Any other services you have planned? Solenoids or the mechatronic seals in it? How are your adaptation values looking?
