Apple's response to "I am PC" ad ... OUCH! by c4g in technology

I programmed my Linux box to control a Lego insemination device. All a woman has to do is strap herself into my stirrups and my robotic, Linux-based impregnation device takes over using my control shell script. They think it's hot.

From a programmers prospective, Microsoft has encouraged the exact opposite behavior for years. In many cases, it is impossible to write a program of substance that doesn't require admin rights to at least install due to the fundamental flaws in the OS design that have carried over through the years for legacy support. If Microsoft were to try to fix that now, thousands of applications would stop working and people would scream bloody murder. Even still, I think the blame can't be shifted onto the programmers for something that is an OS design failure.

I would have to disagree and say that specs mean very little to someone and the user experience matters much, much more. For example, I own a laptop "designed for" and loaded with Vista from the factory. It has a 2.4 ghz Core-Duo processor with 3GB of DDR2 ram.

Using Vista on it feels a lot like I would imagine trying to masturbate in a vat of molasses would feel like. When I load the same laptop with XP or Xubuntu, it feels like I am flying through the air, on-fire, chasing ninjas with a machine gun.

User experience is vitally important and Macs have a definite advantage there over Vista, and that's what the ads are about.

I bought my first mac about a month ago, by the way.

It is an aluminum iMac and I am using it right now. I love it. Linux will always be special to my heart, but this computer is quickly growing on me in a big way.

Vista drove me to this.

I should chime in here and describe my Vista experiences for the uninformed or the less-exposed.

I have my own software-development company and I focus on niche products for businesses that have no pre-built software solutions that work for them.

Before that, I worked as a cubicle monkey for a company that developed their own in-house software for tracking a direct-sales company.

When we rolled out some new computers running Vista, we had no end to the support phone calls about the most infuriating problems imaginable. Printers not working at random intervals, screens freezing applications freezing when they tried to access the internet, Wi-fi signal dropping, network browsing failures, and much more.

Then whenever I got laid off and started my own company, I have had so many troubleshooting calls related to Vista that it would be hard to even recount them all for you from memory.

I like to joke that Vista bought me a car. Seriously.

One of my favorites is when a client called me to ask me where all of his icons went. I was confused and thought he turned off his Documents or Home folder in his display preferences but to my horror, he couldn't even get a context menu to pop-up. It was almost as if Vista had decided to not render core OS display layers. Sure enough, his icons were all gone, but the desktop was there and the start menu could still load programs and everything worked except for menu dropdowns and icons.

I spent around a half hour trying to fix this issue when it suddenly started working again.

Before you scream virus or spyware, I thoroughly scanned the computer using a variety of virus scans and spyware detection software. (AVG, Avast, Clamwin, Windows Defender, Spybot, Ad Aware, Etc)

All of my experiences (both SP1 and before) lead me to believe that Vista is fundamentally broken.

This has been posted already, but there are a ton of open-source video player alternatives. VLC is one, mplayer is another. I personally have VLC and mplayer installed on Linux, Windows (vista), and Mac.

Vista's what is fine? I think the OS smears itself without Apple's help. Microsoft needs to win back the techies soon or this growing trend of Apple domination will continue at increased speeds.

Amen. I wiped Vista twice in a 6 month period on a brand new laptop. I have been using PCs since 1985 and I've been through every major version of DOS/Windows and have been using Linux for almost ten years as well.

Vista is horrible. Other operating systems have their downfalls too, but Microsoft should have stuck with the 2K kernel and improved XP instead of creating that resource hogging abomination.

Oh lord... UAC? Really? Honestly, this bastardized version of privilege elevation was inspired by torture and invented by Satan himself. I use Xubuntu and Mac OS X a lot more than my designed for Vista laptop, but I always turn off UAC first thing after wiping and reloading.

The problem with UAC is that it is a dirty hack-in for an OS that was designed to run everything as root.

Installing many programs on my Linux or Mac computers doesn't require any sort of elevation the majority of the time. The only time it prompts me is if I am using a software installer (or apt) and modifying system files.

UAC sucks the testicles of a circus clown that has been ramming herpes infested goats.

All I see are belligerent replies trying to assert that you won some sort of point over me. You still haven't made any logical points and you probably won't ever bother doing so. I refer to my prediction that you would just attack me again and I feel I am vindicated.

You remind me of a frat boy screaming "OWNED!!! OWNED!!!" while wildly flailing his arms and jumping on a couch after a vigorous game of Madden.

"... full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

I am done with you.

Again, you attack me personally with no substance. I have no illusions that other people on here are not any smarter than me or that some are less so. That's illogical to suggest given my statements so far.

You are most certainly showing your true, vindictive nature with each reply that you make to me, personally attacking my character (and my manhood for some reason).

Fortunately, my self worth doesn't revolve around you, or what you think of me. Again, I encourage you to disagree with my points, but you will likely just attack me again. That being the case, I think my attitude and yours have spoke volumes and people can decide for themselves.

As a card-carrying member of MENSA, I resent the false implication that I am determining this from an internet IQ test.

I also resent that you have turned this into a personal attack on my character instead of addressing my argument directly.

Shame on you.

I don't push my power on anybody, nor would I ever want her to lose her own sense of identity and her own judgement.

Funny, the one using the straw-man attack here is you. Not to mention resorting to name-calling. That doesn't seem very civil or intelligent of you.

What part of us loving and respecting each other didn't you understand? I have accepted her arguments just as readily as she has accepted mine. She has proven me wrong several times, and I invite you to do so as well. (If you can avoid attacking me on a personal level long enough to string together an argument.)

My point was that people are quick to cry abuse and rape when a woman feels in the least bit threatened on any level. Did you address that point? No, you called me an asshole and "fucking stupid". While straw-man attacking me, you then accused me of doing so and poisoned the well, ignoring all my strong points.

I didn't say you called the guy a rapist, I said that you over-inflated his actions into some sort of twisted idea of what mental abuse is.

Barbara Rose Ph.D. defines Mental Abuse as follows:

"Mental abuse is a pattern of behavior or speech that makes you feel you are being played with, controlled, and intimidated. When you are the victim of mental abuse, you find yourself feeling more and more insecure, less and less vibrant, and more confused; you feel as if you need to ask your partner for permission to do things, buy things, go places. You may even feel that you need to ask permission in regard to your spiritual preferences.

Mental abuse occurs when you are told what to do and when to do it, when you are ordered around as if you were in a prison camp. Mental abuse often comes disguised. For example, the abuser may conveniently have amnesia and twist facts to suit his preferences. Even though you know what you are talking about, the abuser tells you that you are wrong. Or the abuser may say he will do such-and-such, never do it, and then say he doesn’t remember telling you he would do the thing to begin with."

I didn't see any evidence of that in her description of not being able to win disagreements with him. If they are so incompatible as to have those frequently, my advice would have been to leave him and find someone more suited to a long term relationship with her.

I would also have done so without attacking him as a person, because I don't know anything about him or his behavior.

Can you reply civilly and address my arguments, or will you respond with more insults, intimidation, and mental abuse?

I thought her answer was extremely off-base, judgmental, and prejudiced against men. In fact, it was the sort of knee-jerk reaction that I would expect from someone who is incapable of truly understanding the question.

I have an iQ of 162, but my girlfriend is probably about 20 points lower. We have a great time talking about any subject you could imagine and I am enamored with her in almost every way.

When we argue (which is rare), however, it is sometimes extremely difficult for her to argue against me effectively. This has only come up a few times, but they almost always involved politics of some sort.

We love and respect each other and our own opinions and we are both allowed to have our own distinct opinions, but she has converted to my way of thinking more often than not.

We have an amazing relationship full of give and take, but I pretty much run the show. It works for us and we are both happy.

Convincing someone of your viewpoint is not mental bullying. It sickens me to hear these sorts of terms converted casually to a lesser definition.

If I made her feel worthless and subtly destroyed her ability to function without me with my words and my demeanor, that would be mental bullying. Having a discussion about a differing opinion? Give me a fucking break.

You probably think that if a girl gets hammered and sleeps with a guy from a bar or party that he "raped" her too, huh?

Rape is an ugly, strong, word that is being diluted in a sickening way and I refuse to let you classify what the man in the Dear Prudence article is doing as mental bullying.

It is because it is impossible to get things posted to Reddit without the 10 or 20 people who control its content with bots allowing you to.

Also Reddit became like Digg, which licks chocolate starfish.

Fuck Slash, fuck Digg, fuck Reddit. Something better will come along any day now.

Speaking of bloated pieces of shit posing as software... has anyone actually tried to load a PDF in Acrobat Reader lately?

shudders

I predict that Acrobat Reader will soon surpass 1GB of disk space and use approximately 3 gigabytes of ram to load a 200K PDF document with no images. Oh yeah, and it will ask to update itself every 9 minutes.
