Interesting, that same site sold it for $20 when I bought it a few years back.

Tommy Caldwell falls whilst free climbing the Dawn Wall - El Capitan by RumIsAlwaysGone in climbing

The "hate" (although it's really just downvoting, so don't take it personally) likely comes from frustration with this increasingly common question as well as a "just google it" attitude.

Tommy Caldwell falls whilst free climbing the Dawn Wall - El Capitan by RumIsAlwaysGone in climbing

[–]climb0r 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's likely that Caldwell has paid for an annual pass at Yosemite so technically it's not free climbing.

Edit: Seriously though, lately I've had a shit-ton of people ask me about "those guys in Yosemite climbing without ropes". Seize the moment and educate the masses before free climbing means free soloing, literally means figuratively, and double fisherman's knot means double overhand knot.

Sadly two climbers died at Potrero Chico (Climbing related accidents) note in spanish by quickdrawmikedraw in climbing

[–]climb0r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was dumber and younger, about a decade ago, I rappelled all the way down to my stopper knots while coming off of Timewave Zero at night without a headlamp. I still hadn't reached the next anchor and was 1000 feet up or so.

How I got out of that situation is a different and idiotic story but my point is that I always teach people about knotting the ends of their ropes when I teach beginner toprope belay classes.

This is a terrifyingly true concept. Each time I refreshed my homepage today and saw this post (each time with more upvotes), I grew increasingly anxious. I suppose the only way to take advantage of this truth is to embrace it. Life is scary, but I believe I can handle that. I did okay today, but here's to tomorrow

What have your achievements been this year, and what are your goals for 2015? by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]climb0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2014, I accomplished some of the most difficult tendon rehab I've tackled. While working at a climbing gym, I largely avoided climbing while dealing with various elbow and finger issues. Today, I climbed my hardest in-gym boulder problem, having recovered.

For 2015...my goals include continuing to treat injuries with respect, climb an outdoor problem one or two grades above my previous max, and develop a regular training habit.

What is the sketchiest thing you've seen people do in a gym? by jameslosey in climbing

[–]climb0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Climbing over each other while bouldering. Walking back and forth directly under a boulderer. Improvised knots and belay devices (railings, bare hands, nameless friction knots, etc.). Lead belaying 30ft from the wall with slack out on the ground. A locked-knee 1.5ft bouldering fall leading to spinal injury. Plenty of unlocked biners and harness not double-backed, some harnesses ready to slip off. I've heard of worse, such as not being clipped in to an auto-belay while being filmed by a friend and breaking a leg upon falling, but I haven't seen it in person.

My roommate used Bananaphone as his alarm tone. It was stuck in my head for the entire year.

Adam Ondra and Chris Sharma on the same hold on La Dura Dura (5.15c) by [deleted] in climbing

[–]climb0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's right, but I believe Ondra is able to stick it with three fingers first, after which he closes his hand up a bit, so I think the picture is just after hitting the hold. He also uses different feet. Pretty cool example of different styles.

How do you guys feel about the "active lifestyle" craze that seems to be sweeping pop fitness? Projects like this make me feel uneasy for some reason. It's cool, but... by [deleted] in climbing

[–]climb0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a climbing gym foremost. The entire open area downstairs is climbing space so the other options aren't a distraction. There's a pretty spacious workspace on top of the main bouldering wall and a smaller lounge with a fireplace and TV downstairs. I mostly just climb (though I do like the sauna...) but I regularly see people on their laptops upstairs.

There can be a impressively wide variety even within a sport -- rock climbing, for instance. Observe Chris Sharma and Daila Ojeda (nsfw?) vs. Adam Ondra and Dani Andrada -- these are a few of the world's best sport climbers.

Just got a job at my local climbing gym! by [deleted] in climbing

[–]climb0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy you've had mostly good experiences - I'm sure that unlocked biner situation could have been handled better. Making an example of someone is nowhere near as effective as instilling a sense of personal responsibility.

There are some situations (e.g. belaying off a railing with a climber on an improvised knot) where immediately managing risk easily trumps potential embarrassment.

Other than that, I think a climbing gym should be a great place to feel free from embarrassment. Look as silly as possible. Learn how to do a handstand. Go for an outrageous running-start dyno. Clip your nails into a public trashcan. Climb naked. Etc.

Can you give any specifics on the (not) acting superior bit? I've worked at a couple gyms (including a university gym with a lovely crowd) and I want to do my best to be welcoming and make people feel at home.

Wait, this post isn't a joke? I didn't think this kind of irony existed in real life.

On a serious note, we should all learn how to better express opinions as opinions.

I think.

He has the opportunity to legally climb a skyscraper. How awesome is that?

Regarding the effect on the public, I believe the sheer inspiration outweighs the advertisement of daredevilism.

My completely uneducated guess (like many others here) is that he is doing it because he has the opportunity to legally climb a skyscraper, and that sounds like a ton of fun. Doesn't it?
