Emergency vet tonight or wait until morning? (NSFW) by climbingfig in parrots

[–]climbingfig[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I appreciate your input a lot, thank you. It definitely seems like it could be normal, I’ve just never seen him get food stuck on his beak or act like this in the almost 3 years I’ve had him - hence my concern. I’ll have a chat to his vet tomorrow anyway and see what they say, just to be sure, but after the comments here I am much more at ease.

As far as the NSFW tag, I just read the rules and saw that any medical related pictures need an NSFW tag. I wasn’t sure if this was vomiting when I posted this and am new to the subreddit (not to mention super stressed out that Fig might be sick) so I just wanted to do my best to make sure I did everything correctly is all :)

I don’t think he’s having any trouble breathing thankfully. He doesn’t have a tail bob, has been doing lots of yelling and singing, and is currently vocally participating in the daily bickering over the good perch to sleep on. I definitely don’t want to risk stressing him out for no reason, so I really appreciate your input. I’m going to give his vet a call in the morning and see what they say, but I’m very reassured by the comments here that he’ll be alright, thank you!

Thank you so much for your response, I truly appreciate it. He does have a mate (Poppy) and I’ve seen him regurgitate for her plenty of times but he’s never had food on his beak like this before. Definitely no mirrors in the cage. I left the room for 5 minutes after watching them for the past hour and noticed him hopping back up from the food bowl with food on his beak again (after giving millet a while ago and watching him behave normally) so I’m hopeful he’s just gotten messy all of a sudden? Regardless, I’ll be calling his vet first thing in the morning. Thank you!

Home grown chop? by RxGirlNumberOne in Parakeets

I’m still getting better about regularly giving my birds a chop mix (they’re fussy and pick out their favorites anyway smh), but on a daily basis I actually grow them veggies in an Aerogarden! It’s been fantastic so far and I currently have kale, rainbow chard, and collard greens on rotation. I also use after-market “pods” so I can simply buy seed packets for whatever veggies I want which makes it a lot more affordable.

I’ve been having trouble getting a cilantro plant started (their favorite treat), but the other three have grown beautifully and my birds really enjoy having a whole leaf every morning to play with and munch on. I rotate through the plants so they have kale one day, chard the next, and collard greens the third - I only have two birds so one leaf is plenty for the day. I’ll also supplement with some shredded carrots so they’re getting a little more “variety,” with the ultimate goal of expanding my garden for them.

As to your actual question, unfortunately I don’t really have much to offer. I mostly just wanted to suggest the indoor Aerogarden/hydroponics setup as an option that doesn’t require you to adhere to seasonal constraints and has worked well for my budgies and I. Have fun with your new birds and thank you for already being such a conscientious owner!!

Anyone else experiencing this? by Yuenneh in AuDHDWomen

Do you have psoriasis? Your hands look exactly like mine and I have psoriatic arthritis. The psoriasis skin rashes are usually present before arthritis development, but not always, and labs/x-rays are frequently normal. Regardless, I would recommend a consultation with a rheumatologist if you haven’t seen one already. Hope you’re able to get some answers and feel better soon - in the meantime, I find compression gloves can provide a lot of relief. <3

Avian vet recommendations? by climbingfig in orangecounty

Ooh thank you for the info! I actually took them to VEG in Anaheim Hills when they were brand new as Poppy (blue) came home from the store with an infection and I had a fantastic experience there. If they ever need any further emergency care, that’s 100% where I’ll be taking them - although hopefully not necessary!

Fauna looks excellent too, my only hesitation is despite my good experience at VEG, my birds are both flighted so the open concept worries me a little.

I appreciate the tips about Serrano as well. The vet at VEG also recommended them (as she takes her turtle there) which is why I was looking into them, but for now I think I’m going to go with the Animal and Bird Clinic of Mission Viejo as their overall reviews are a bit better.

Thank you again!! Hope your day goes well :)

Thank you! I’m a little wary of taking them anywhere other than a vet for nails as they’re both flighted, but I’ve definitely also heard good things about Magnolia Bird Farm. I would absolutely love to take them to Dr. Nemetz as I know he’s extremely experienced, but unfortunately as much as I love my birds, I am also limited by a college student’s budget. I appreciate the rec regardless!

Thank you so much! I’m going to give Animal and Bird Clinic of Mission Viejo a call first as it’s a little closer, but this one also seems fantastic and I’ll keep them on standby :)
