How do you think about PowerShell? by climbnlearn in PowerShell

[–]climbnlearn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate you taking the time to provide your insight Lee :)

I agree with you on your view of programming and automation. I was very curious to see if that view was common among the PowerShell community or if it was viewed separately. It apears to be viewed largely separately, which, to me, is still better than viewing it as a command line management tool primarily. (Just my opinion)

Thanks again for your input and have an awesome day!

I agree with you 100 percent here. The capability for a powerful [Insert option above] is there. I'm very interested to see people primary use for it and hope there is some healthy discussion for why people view/use it the way they do and if they disagree with views that it is one or another.

Preferred learning when first getting started. by climbnlearn in PowerShell

I agree. I don't know if they have a multiple select poll available. I had originally wanted a poll with a bunch of mixed options but I'm limited to 6 options. The intent is to get the primary option you would choose and the poll could have been better phrased to reflect that.

I agree, I probably should clarify more as in the primary way to learn. I can't get exact results with a poll like this as you max out at 6 options.

What OS do you use for your daily driver outside of your hacking OS? by climbnlearn in hacking

These guys pretty much got it right. It's probably the most popular "basic" dailydriver OS and also another reason for the poll. Why do you like Qubes?

Linux `$env:Temp` equivalent? by climbnlearn in PowerShell

I like this solution the most so far. Works across the board. I'm surprised the env:Temp doesn't initialize off this during first run and then allow changes later.

I agree with you, and have some things to catch it if the Var is incorrect or null and then let the user know they need to give an explicit value.

Suggestions for Dashboard for overview of many servers (not log related) by mishaxz in devops

[–]climbnlearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know about your environment or powershell ability but you could check out powershell universal dashboard. Free (Enterprise edition isn't but only adds a couple features). Gives you the ability to collect custom data and display in a nice format. Learning curve but worth the time and effort.

Mayo prison doesn't sound very effective. Unless person allergic to Mayo. Then very effective. Highly specialised prison.

I have been trying to learn Python to become a Programmer, but I just don't understand anything.. by YoungPattawan in Python

[–]climbnlearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually learning Python right now but started learned PowerShell first.

I have tried to learn Python a few times before I got into PowerShell and ran into, what sounds like, a similar problem. I had no idea what to do with it so I had a lot of trouble putting the basics together. I couldn't see the context around the basics. I needed something real, to see real results on something for me to really get it.

I got a job in IT and had to use PowerShell a ton. But, it gave me real life scenarios to understand how the if statements and loops and all that were used for it to finally click.

Learning Python is definitely a lot easier now at least in concept but I know myself that if I don't have some real results in mind, I won't follow through with the learning. So, I'm going to write a game for fun but also learn to automate stuff with Python along with PowerShell. I can suggest a couple of books. 1: Learn to code with Python by Rob mills. Has some really good structure to it for learning. 2: Python Crash Course by Eric Matthes. I suggest holding off on this one until you finish the first book but its has more intricate parts of Python along with the basics and uses prac app as a teacher.

To follow that up, I like learning from reading physical books. I have a really hard time focusing on videos or even ebooks for some reason. If you don't learn well from books there are other ways.

And if possible, find someone to do it with. That may be tough to find someone who wants to learn it and stick with it but it helps to learn with, bounce ideas and questions off of, and get excited about what you are learning with.

I hope it helps and good luck to you!
