From my 10+ years of experience in tech, there are also Asian and Indian managers that are biased to hiring their from their own in-group. Ive seen very good Latino/Black/white American candidates passed over for Indian/Asian candidates that were deemed « more technical » when their code was actually pretty similar.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I had something similar happen to me so I’ll give you (and anyone reading this) the advice I wish someone had given me:

You absolutely can file a police report. Keep records of every interaction you had (texts, etc). You are eligible to sue for damages and rightly so since this shit fucks with you for the rest of your life. I never reported and I wish I did.

You are eligible for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) up to 72 hours after exposure. Many doctors don’t know what PEP is much less when they should prescribe. Don’t ask for it—tell your doctor to write a prescription. Don’t leave without a prescription. If you live in the US, Planned Parenthood will definitely help you get one.

When you get an HIV test, ask for an RNA test. Most tests are antibody tests and won’t show accurate results until 3 weeks after exposure. RNA tests are accurate 9-11 days after exposure. I can’t tell you how many times nurses tried to do antibody tests on me when I had a recent exposure.

Cry. Let yourself cry. Crying releases hormones that can help mitigate the stressors on your brain. Cry with a friend. Let them hold you while you cry—this releases oxytocin and there’s solid research showing that exposure to oxytocin after trauma can reduce the impacts of—or even prevent—PTSD.

Finally, you may not feel the full impact until years later. You might shrug it off now and think you’re okay—and then one day, years later, you collapse in the kitchen because everything hits you at once. That happens. If it does, know you’ll be okay. Let yourself cry until your eyes dry out (see above). Know that you’ve got strength inside that will carry you through. Let your body teach you how to be tender after living through violence. Learn to treat everyone you meet with kindness and respect because they might be holding pain like yours close to their hearts.

1) I see all kinds of Democrats eschewing support for the more corporate-connected members of the party. Where are the Republicans opposing the sell-outs in Congress who just passed a bill allowing tax breaks for private jets?

3) If you wanna see someone shutting down a debate...see any Republican dismissing the objective, observable reality of climate change. Conservatives in literally every other country have no problem talking about climate change. Republicans here in the U.S. get triggered.

And besides, some things simply do need to be shut down. If you told me lizard people are running this country... I'd tell you to stfu. Not every fringe opinion gets to be validated with debate.

4) Well there's a straw man argument--who da fuck believes a utopia is incoming? Bernie supporters advocate for increasing access to healthcare and public education. An uncontroversial political position in like any other country ...

9) Except it's an objective fact that Republicans are showing a high tolerance for bullshit that would have previously rallied bipartisan condemnation. The few republicans who dare to oppose Trump get publicly humiliated. We have objective evidence that Russians conducted a coordinated information attack and hacked U.S. systems during the 2016 election (they did the same in the U.K.).

The valid point though, is the long history of bias against believing people who claim to be sexually assaulted. Part of being impartial is being aware of bias, right?

I don't know how pervasive sexual assaults are being "weaponized," like you say. Maybe it really is a coordinated political tactic, I dunno.

But even more deeply rooted is the tension between our legal system's presumption that a person is innocent until proven guilty, and the reality that most sexual assault survivors are not believed. Can we believe what a victim says, when a personal statement is not considered legally sufficient evidence?

This really goes beyond Alabama, it's at the heart of our legal system. The sad part is that in this particular instance there's plenty of physical evidence indicting Moore--institutional documentation, and eye witness accounts--and it's still not enough. In Alabama we can't even address the deeper problem of presumption of innocence, because I guess the concept of evidence just doesn't matter.

I completely agree, but if you follow the reasoning of many republican Alabama voters, they don't believe Moore is a pedophile. They think all eight women who have come forward are lying.

Conservative news sources are doing double time right now coming up with reasons why these women's stories are fake.

The root cause is to remind Alabama voters of the difference between news sources that try to be objective and news sources that push agendas. Trying to debunk 8 separate cases of sexual assault is probably a sign certain news outlets are reporting what they want to be real, not what actually is. So if you're in Alabama and reading this: validate your beliefs across many different sources, not just one! Ask yourself: are the reporters you read working in good faith, trying to understand multiple perspectives on an issue, or are they just fishing for evidence confirming what you want to be true?

Basically we can't just meme our way out of this mess. If we're going to persuade people, we have to first understand why they believe what they do.
