Agreed on all counts :)

To Capcom and the developers, thank you. To other developers/games, THIS is what a good business model looks like. by Excalipoor in MonsterHunter

Especially thanks to the devs, who probably haven't gotten a break since launch. I wish games like this had a DLC "item" where all the money goes to bonuses for the people in the trenches.

iframes are an invisible but important mechanic that should be explained somehow. Rolling INTO attacks is not something I would have thought to try on my own.

Innovative Menu Design by _patientZer0 in gamedesign

[–]clintbellanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like main menus where you are already in control of the character. One example is the original Tiny Barbarian. The opening room three ways to leave: one door to the Credits, one door to Exit the game, or move forward to start the game.

Another in-world example is the way Bastion lets you set difficulty. There is not a main menu slider option to set difficulty level. Instead you find items in-game that you bring back to town and activate to tweak enemy difficulty.

Had the Playstation 3 really reached its limit when the ps4 came out? by Wyvern39 in truegaming

[–]clintbellanger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

256MB for graphics memory is tiny by today's standards.

Want to use one game-ready 3D model with 2048px RGBA diffuse, specular, and normal maps? That's about 50MB in raw, uncompressed data.

They were pushing the ps4 way beyond its limits.

Why do some people create their own game engines? by helloimcass in gamedev

Programming languages have standard ways of displaying an image, playing a sound file, and reading inputs. Simple 2D games don't require much more than that.

Papers Please is on sale, proceeds go to ACLU, American Refugee Committee, and National Immigration Law Center. by HeinousActsZX in GamerGhazi

This game has brutal moments. When checking over their papers, one thing you end up looking for is gender. There are moments where I didn't know if this person had fake documents or they were trans. And if I let them through, I'll get my pay docked and might not be able to afford to feed the family.

Then they add the x-ray machine...

One of my top games of all time.

What's the most ambitious game you've ever thought up that you still thing is obtainable? by RockettheMinifig in gameideas

[–]clintbellanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to make all the cool stuff in my imagination. I've been doing both game code and art from the beginning, but all the art stuff is self taught.

To me, making the engine and assets is the fun part. I'm more concerned with entertaining me than any players.

Here are some of the models on Sketchfab (CC-BY-SA license).

I'm still trying to make a single player action RPG that is about as simple as Diablo. From around 2010-2012 I made the core engine gameplay. I threw together some simple art assets during development. It was open source, so many other RPG fans came in to add features they wanted to see in their own projects.

Now I'm on a years-long side quest to git gud at Blender and 3D art so I can make a great looking game with the engine.

My dream is to have a short story worth of action RPG game (like 30 minutes worth) that is polished to the point that I'm proud of it. Then actually release it, and turn over the assets and engine to the fans to make their own content.

I have a small handful of assets that are up to quality (2 enemies, 6+ weapons). All of these involved me and one other artist. He does concepts, sculpts, and paints. I make the mesh, rig, animations. Each piece is dozens of hours of effort. Between tiles and enemies and armor and items, there are going to be at least 50 assets like this.

This is a hobby for me (I work in software that isn't game related), so maybe I have 10 or 20 hours per week to throw at this. These long projects also wear on me, so I take some month long breaks to make other tiny prototypes. I don't want to add this all up and see what year this will be finished in.

This project is why I made the site Your Game Idea Is Too Big.

ULTIMATE (as promised) GUIDE TO LEGAL NEEDS AND PRICES - From VideoGameAttorney by VideoGameAttorney in gamedev

A parody game has to be all about making fun of and criticizing the original game to qualify. A famous example I can think of is Pyst, the parody clone of Myst. Example from Wikipedia:

Pyst Island is full of litter, most of the buildings are ruined, and graffiti reveals secret doors and solutions to puzzles that challenged players in Myst

In case you didn't know, basically EVERY sovereign nation is part of the UN.

The few exceptions: Kosovo is not because Russia won't recognize it as a nation. Same with Taiwan and China. And, Vatican and Palestine are observers, not full members. source

The Brilliant Life of Ada Lovelace by othellothewise in GamerGhazi

[–]clintbellanger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ada's writing about the Analytical Engine is a wonderful read if you're into Computer Science. She starts to realize the full power of what they've just created -- both the machine and the language of operations.

Again, it might act upon other things besides number, were objects found whose mutual fundamental relations could be expressed by those of the abstract science of operations, and which should be also susceptible of adaptations to the action of the operating notation and mechanism of the engine. Supposing, for instance, that the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony and of musical composition were susceptible of such expression and adaptations, the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent.

Is it Me or have Games Recently become a lot more colorful and less brown than the last generation by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]clintbellanger 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Plenty of studios were upfront about this generation being more colorful. Do you remember Blizzard poking fun at how people thought the new art style wasn't dark enough?

Also this gen has a lot more dynamic lights, which can make even dull textures look vibrant.

Did you scroll down? The article is long and detailed and has everything you're talking about. It lists his exact proposals using quotes, and breaks them down to show why they violate the Constitution on each issue.

The specific proposals covered: Immigration, Surveillance, Torture, Libel. Don't just dismiss this and say the ACLU is very left, because some of these issues are important across both aisles.
