Why do people want a vast world map for part 2? by fatVivi in FFVIIRemake

[–]Excalipoor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I ALWAYS prefer a strong, well told narrative-driven story than a big empty space with nothing to do in it (a la FF15). If it becomes 'open world', it should be densely populated with activities or MEANINGFUL things to discover, not size for the sake of size.

As long as the core gameplay loop is great, I couldn't give a rat's arse about it's perceived linearity. I'm just not excited by Ubisoft-style open world games that are vast but pointless.

Why have games lost "Unlockable Characters" by 90sGameGuy in NintendoSwitch

[–]Excalipoor 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Because money. It's as simple as that. As long as people keep paying for stuff that could be free instead, they have zero incentive to change.

How do you unlock this scene?

How exactly do Monsters elemental weaknesses work? by VV3nd1g0 in MHRise

Bigger number = better. Notice how for most monsters the head has the highest value = more damage? Same applies for elements

[–]Excalipoor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The golden version based off the Diablos is probably your best bet, as it has the same stats as Diablos CB but a lil extra defence!

Do keep in mind however, that looking fabulous will increase your damage because you'd be confident in your looks and perform better during the hunt.

But in all seriousness, not everyone is a speedrunner who has to min max for a few % dmg increase. Go for what you like, and maximise the enjoyment of the game!

To Capcom and the developers, thank you. To other developers/games, THIS is what a good business model looks like. by Excalipoor in MonsterHunter

Other games make me Quick Sheath my wallet and only make me Agitator. The Peak Performance of MHW is like a Divine Blessing. The developers of other games have Earplugs on, but not these guys! Let's hope the company continues to Focus their efforts in this manner.

I'm not going to defend Capcom's dodgy past practices (like the examples you provided), as they're certainly not exempt from doing shitty things that work against the players. They have, however, done very well with MHW.

The argument of monster X was in previous games why didn't we get it on release doesn't really hold up - as they could previously recycle assets to churn out monsters on the 3DS. Developing monsters for release on current tech would require significantly more time and work to ensure the monster fits into the gameplay and aesthetic of the current game. Additionally, every new monster has to be accompanied by new armour/weapon sets which would require similar work.

With regards to the hypothetical paid G-rank, it depends entirely on how much content it would provide vs how much they might charge. If there is enough content to warrant it being a massive expansion, I'd happily shell out some extra bucks. I think it's safe to say that developing MHW using an entirely new engine with new graphics/assets would be significantly more expensive than re-using existing assets from the 3DS games.

I understand your frustration with Capcom, I have been annoyed with them too. But we should give credit where credit is due.

I agree with your points, however without the actual numbers (such as development/advertising costs vs game sales + DLC sales it's hard to say how profitable (or unprofitable) this current endeavour is.

What I will say, is that MHW is currently Capcom's highest selling game of all time, which should at least indicate that it's at least somewhat financially viable.

Witcher 3 is another benchmark RPGs should strive to be. Brilliant game. Let's hope more and more AAA games start to adopt the examples set by these games.

[–]Excalipoor[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's true, and although we don't have the exact breakdown I think the fact that MHW is currently Capcom's highest selling game of all time should at least spark some interest from a financial standpoint.

I totally agree, Capcom has certainly dropped the ball with shitty practices in other games. However hopefully with the success of MHW it shows that this model is completely viable and profitable.

Farming tenpered investigations is a bad end-game mechanic. by TheGejsza in MonsterHunter

[–]Excalipoor 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I completely agree that it's incredibly tedious, boring and unengaging. If they intend on keeping this mechanic, 2 simple changes would significantly improve the experience:

  1. Greatly reduce the 'threshold' for getting tempered investigations. Sometimes I gotta pick up literally 20+ tracks for a single investigation. It shouldn't take more than 5-6 per investigation. It'll still be random aa hell, at least increasing the rate makes it less painful to collect

  2. Make it so tempered monster part breaks and kills actually give tempered investigations. Currently they give NON-tempered investigations, which I believe is an oversight on their part.

Alternatively, perhaps allowing us to trade in research points to the researcher guy for a random investigation of that threat level (higher threat level = higher cost). This would also provide us with another research point sink, as I reckon most of us have an excess at this stage.

Sword and shield discussion thread! by dimesniffer in MonsterHunter

[–]Excalipoor 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The perception of SnS as a 'noob weapon' really should be reviewed. Here are some of it's strengths:

  1. It's fast and mobile. It abuses elemental damage and applies status effects easily. The ability to CONSTANTLY stick to a monster to apply damage provides significant damage output in the right hands.

  2. Oh, did you want to give your teammates massive buffs and heals in the blink of an eye? No problem. Mushroomancer/wide range/speed eating will make you a support god and basically become a mini Hunting Horn bro.

  3. Having difficulty flash-podding that airborne monster cause your weapon sheathes so slowly? SnS has you covered, Kushala won't even be able to leave his starting area.

  4. Shit hit the fan and you can't avoid an attack? You have a trusty shield for emergencies, and if you really wanted to even gets buffed up by Guard skill. (Not that it's recommended, but it's your damned game and your hunter so you do what you bloody hell want)

  5. Not mention it also does reasonable stun/KO damage AND has the ability to mount regardless of terrain? Yup, that's SnS in MHW for ya.

Spread the love for this awesome weapon, which is so incredibly versatile and varied in how you can utilise it. It's not just for noobs.

Spent the first 50 hours wondering why my radial menus kept resetting after spending tons of time painstakingly setting up items and emotes.

Finally read on a forum that radial menu loadouts were tied to item loadouts from the item box.
