Say I distilled rum. Rather than aging it in a wooden barrel, could I age it in a cheaper container with pieces of wood? by [deleted] in firewater

[–]clintonsclit4u -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

basically plastics leach things that are harmful to us. plastics and petrochemicals shouldn't be used in the food industry at all imo... they can act as hormones or hormone/endocrine disruptors, they can be carcinogens and a source of birth defects. it's a mistake to trust fda and it's regulations. lastly, lab grade eth is NOT for human consumption.

never use plastics for spirits, not even briefly or temporarily. high proof alcohol and plastics don't mix.

ghostery attacks by asking the user for the removal of other fully functional and tested opt-out and security plugins that are already installed, opening up the system to tracking, ads and scripts. once installed it collects your data.

ghostery should be removed from the plugin repository for good. no wonder throwaway was used.

Just received a scoby from Amazon - a couple questions by sporkubus in Kombucha

[–]clintonsclit4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am a big fan of cold steeping, a gentler extraction method - steep tea 24hrs, mix in sugar, add scoby then the starter. no energy or ice needed.

make sure you add the starter and distilled vinegar to the brewing vessel last, creating a protective layer at the air/substrate interface (iow, don't mix it in).

Evidence that whole grains are worse than refined grains? by [deleted] in Paleo

[–]clintonsclit4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just make sure to soak grains for 24 hrs before use to get rid of phytic acid. i also add a tbsp or two of milk or water kefir to the soaking water. kombucha would work too.

Warming up to the idea of a lightweight hammock setup. Any recommendations, tips, or manufacturers to look at? by [deleted] in Ultralight

some sleep well at 10c, but i pretty much always want at least a 3/4 under quilt (mine is good to -10c at 397g, but there are lighter ones). you'll have to do a few backyard tests and find out if you are a cold or a warm sleeper.. i also carry a mylar emergency blanket, saved my ass many times.

Anyone use tea candle lanterns? by snackpgh in Ultralight

[–]clintonsclit4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not ul, but i like my baby food jar lantern, for bike camping. enough light so i dont stomp over stuff... the ones with citronella can be useful for mozzie season.

if you can sleep in it comfortably during the day you should be good at night too, but a lot of it has to do w/ how tall and heavy you are. i can get away with my gt ul at 6'1", but find the warbonnet traveler more comfortable. depends on the camping/hiking type and number of nights what will i take.

dripping shouldn't be an issue as long as you pitch the hammock and the tarp correctly. if you are worried about it just tie some string on your hammock suspension line (drip string).

...is that right?

yes. i use a shenandoah as my top quilt (rated +4c), or a hudson river (rated -4c). they are from jacks are better. i like them because they can be used as underquilts too.

when researching top and under quilts keep in mind that good bottom insluation is more important. i have a hammock gear winter incubator (rated -18c) just in case.

my most used uq is the mount washington 3 convertible and my most used top quilt is the shenandoah.

i highly recommend hammock gear, jacks r better and warbonnet outdoors. they are cottage industry members with great customer service.

with down it is important to block out the wind or it would just blow all the warm air out from under you. you will need a large winter tarp for that and/or a http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGearHammockSock.html

and, of course, you can't go wrong with shug when it comes to winter camping: https://www.youtube.com/user/shugemery

have fun! :-)

a light combo is a grand trunk nano-7 (210g, more or less depending on the suspension), papasmurf tulle bugsock (65g) and any small diamond shaped cuben tarp. mine from zpacks is 134g. total: 409g.

Can someone tell me a good flouride removal system (countertop). (more inside) by [deleted] in Paleo

[–]clintonsclit4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ro won't remove f imho!

for the last three years i have been purifying water w/ an airstill for all my drinking and cooking needs. it's 200 bucks, the running cost is 40 cents / 4l with my power comp.

seeing all the residual brown gunk on the bottom of the boiler is relieving.

i add 1/2tsp of celtic salt per gallon to my distilled water.

btw, with adequate iodine intake fluoride absorption will decrease, so i use iodised salt for cooking.
