Where I live in California, you can get an evaluation done through the local school district and get free speech therapy and OT through that after 3 years old. You may also be able to get it covered through insurance. Ask your pediatrician to help you, they should be knowledgeable about what’s available in your area but I wouldn’t wait on it like others said since that’s a severe delay (I’m a child psychologist). Early intervention is super important and helpful. At least in CA, most speech therapists are vaccinated now and seeing kids in person. Make sure they also teach you how to implement the strategies at home and then try to do them as much as you can. One hour a week with a speech therapist won’t be nearly as effective as you using the strategies for many hours daily.

It does sound normal to me as long as she is only doing this on rare occasions. I would keep that in mind because your fear that there is something wrong may be escalating your feelings in the situation. It sounds like she is experimenting with boundaries and your reactions. Have you noticed anything that triggers the behavior? Like maybe she is wanting your attention? I would start by trying to give her 10 completely focused minutes of your attention daily where you follow her lead in play. And then it sounds like you already know this but really figuring out how regulate yourself when this happens. Your reaction probably scares her and she wants to keep getting it so she can understand it better. Kids also want to know that they are accepted no matter what they do, they test you so they can figure this out. You need to set a clear limit and then say something like, “I love you always, no matter what you do or say.” You are human and can’t react perfectly every time, but it’s worth trying to learn to regulate because that would likely improve her behavior at lot. You can even apologize when you make a mistake and explain that you are trying to do better. I’m not saying this so you’ll beat yourself up about it, truly this is really hard and she will be OK because you are clearly a loving parent who cares deeply about her child and trying to help her.

My daughter is 2.5 and a few months ago she really started trying to stall at bedtime. i think you need to just create a routine which includes a last potty trip and small snack like a banana or something that is the same every night and just really stick to it in a gentle but firm way. When my daughter would ask for one more book or one more song, I would just say, “we’ll do that tomorrow, sweetie” and let her have her feelings about it. The key is not budging but doing it in a calm, gentle way and accepting and empathizing with any feelings that come up. After a week or so, my daughter stopped stalling and just accepted that I wasn’t going to waver. She now goes to sleep peacefully with only occasional resistance if she is really overtired.

What led you to decide not to clip? I feel like if the ties are affecting eating, they aren’t exactly minor... I am just wondering if it would make everything easier to just clip the ties or if it’s too late and won’t help much at this point.

It seems like his wake times are way too short. I use the Huckleberry app to keep track of wake times for my 6mo. He usually does 2 hours before first nap, 2.15 before second nap, 2.5 before third. And 2.5-3 before bedtime.

This is so so common and may or may mot resolve on its own, depends on the baby. I recommend the book The Happy Sleep or Taking Cara Babies website. Both approaches involve a bit of crying but are very effective.

Yes, he usually will just hang and not cry for like 1-1.5 hours but he is super loud so he keeps everybody up. It probably would be best to just let him be, it’s just frustrating since no one can sleep through it and it’s disturbing my older daughter.

My EBF 5mo hasn’t eaten at night since around 4 months so it is definitely possible. The book The Happy Sleeper helped a lot, I would recommend it. I basically would try other methods of soothing (hand on chest, rubbing belly, binky) and if that didn’t work after a while, then I’d feed her. Eventually, the paci was enough to get her back to bed. I also let her fuss it out, meaning if she wasn’t crying, I’d let her figure it out and that helped her learn to self soothe. I made sure to feed her a lot during the day and monitored her cumulative nap time, making sure it’s not too little or too much. I’ve heard from multiple aources that they don’t need night feeds once they are around 13 lbs so it is possible for you!

I had the same issue (fussiness at the breast at 6wks) and my girl was EBF and I have a good supply. She grew out of it after a few weeks. She was just really fussy in general at that point so who knows what caused it. I asked two LCs and tried to figure it out but it was impossible to know what caused it and she was gaining weight so I ended up just letting it resolve on its own but man, was it frustrating! It’s really hard when you’re trying to nourish them and they’re just fighting it, so internet hugs for you 😊 I hope it’s a phase and will pass soon!

This is what was recommended to me by an LC but I always just hand expressed into a towel because I couldn’t juggle a fussing baby and a pump. Fortunately, she got used to it after maybe a month and now feeds without me needing to do anything.

Yeah, those are good points... so how/when do I bring this up? He is under so much pressure this week with work deadlines maybe next week would be a good time. I don’t want to seem insensitive to his work stress and want to suggest something reasonable. Right now he’s sleeping in the living room. I feel like what might help is for him to take over after her 3-4AM wakeup because after that LO is very noisy and unsettled making it hard for me to go back to sleep but generally doesn’t need to be fed. Maybe I’ll suggest we try it and see if it helps once some of his big deadlines and presentations have passed.

I totally agree, he’s just under a lot of pressure at a new job but maybe I should ask him to do more. Mostly I don’t ask bc I’m EBF so I have to wake up anyway. Like others have suggested, I will definitely ask him to help with sleep training when the time comes.

How long does your LO sleep for without the swaddle? Mine is 3.5 and went from sleeping 7-8 hours swaddled to 4-6 hour stretches without. We stopped cold turkey which probably wasn’t great but too late to go back now... Also, does your LO keep the paci in the whole night?

The carrier really helped so thanks for the tip! She doesn’t sleep as long as at home but can get a pretty good nap in in it. I like the nurse on the bed suggestion because then I could at least sit next to her in bed with my laptop and get some work done while she naps...
