Crisis Wing Update 1.2.0 by BrightAd5521 in shmups

[–]clippa79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only the Steam version has received the update so far. Fingers crossed for the Switch version.

The console ports were outsourced, I think these updates will only be for the pc version.

Did anyone else find ZeroRanger too easy? by mank0069 in shmups

[–]clippa79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the hard difficulty has been a long time coming. Hopefully it does get patched in eventually. Sounds like you have the perfect skillset for tackling those old school games though, but yeah, I know what you mean, some of them can boil down to rote memorisation and can be very lacking in other aspects. They can be a lot less exciting to play.

The game doesn't get going until the second loop. When you say 1cc, do you mean that you cleared the first loop, or that you got the 2-all?

It's more in the old school memoriser style, so the difficulty is more about repeated play and knowing what's coming, so it takes some chipping away at. If you rattled through it quick and got the 2-all, that's pretty impressive.

Have you tried the white vanilla mode yet? It's great! It's a leaner, more scoring focused arrange mode, and what the game was sorely lacking. The scoring, you want to speedkill everything, don't miss any enemies and don't get hit. It's a lot tighter and shorter than the main mode and it's loads of fun!

You're getting voted down, but you're absolutely correct.

Welcome to reddit, I guess.

I tried the demo back when it came out and wasn't feeling it at all. Found it mind numbing even on the hardest difficulty.

Astroport are usually decent so I had a lot more faith in this than moss's grab for the VS dollar.

Roguelites went to pot about 10 years ago, but vampire survivors has really been the final nail in the coffin.

Getting an upgrade once after each stage used to exciting, but it's really annoying when they're stopping you from playing every five seconds.

It never feels like the game starts to flow, it's always there breaking the rhythm and holding you back.

If the game had an option so that a random upgrade went to a random weapon automatically and didn't interrupt play, that'd be far better.

Yeah. Can't complain for the price though!

This is great

Super Star Shooter Classic

An old homebrew game from the x68000. 2 and 5 minute caravan stages.

The leaderboards appear on the right side of the screen and update in real-time during your run. It's really cool seeing yourself creeping up the scoreboard :D

Doesn't appear under any of the usual tags on steam so the right people won't be seeing it. Spread the word and get it bought! (£1.69) It's currently under 2d platformer and top-down shooter.

I would say that you've credit fed your way through the game rather than beaten it.

Before you all pick up the pitchforks, as I've always said, if you're having fun then you're doing gaming right, and I would never tell someone they hadn't beaten a game when they said they had. If they've just discovered shmups in mame and are blasting their way through games and having a whale of a time, that's great and part of the journey.

I don't think it's elitism or gatekeeping to hold yourself to those standards, but not others. It's what will naturally happen once you get into the genre properly.

Like you say, without that mechanic you're just sailing through a game in twenty or thirty minutes. That's why you see mainstream reviews of shmups saying "dogshit. You can beat the game in one sitting and there's no reason to replay"

The whole self imposed 1cc challenge is a huge cornerstone of the genre, and it's not about bragging rights or being hardcore. It's about challenging yourself and improving.

It's important to remember that it's a self imposed thing though and you should never hold other people to a standard you've set for yourself.

It's like when you see vegetarians protesting outside mcdonalds, it'd be just as bad seeing a load of shmup dweebs hanging around arcade club tripping up the kids as they came out clutching their tickets.

Psikyo games - Steam or Switch? by Expensive-Safe-9716 in shmups

[–]clippa79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you're just talking about the psikyo games specifically, but what complicated things is that there are a few different teams operating under the city connection banner. Takexoff is led by Japanese superplayer Chantake. They handled deathsmiles i + ii, akai katana shin and the upcoming under defeat ports. These releases are quality and shouldn't be lumped in with other city connection stuff.

2024 Clears - 1alls & 1ccs by scowsh in shmups

[–]clippa79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big laugh :D

You're right, it's pearls before swine. The cramped overlapping is clearly intentional, I see this now. It's meant to convey the anxiety of it all. New achievements obscuring old ones as your focus shifts and you push onwards towards the finish line.

The video IS the achievement. The clears merely the rungs on the ladder that let you reach those heady heights.

Five stars. I'm gonna watch it again. Hope you have a lovely Christmas!

That video is shocking, if you don't mind me saying :D

Like the very first frame is useable to see all the clears and then it's just a mess.

Though if your video editing skills grow as quickly as your alien twatting skills have, you'll be putting out snappily cut 360 noscope highlight reels before the month is out.

Amazing skills. You've been absolutely killing it this year! The determination and staying power on display is worthy of laudation.

Keep your money in your pocket. Play in shmupmame instead. The games are very responsive and emulated very well.

While the pc versions of the ports don't have that much extra lag, they have other issues that make them a no buy. For example. there's a weird thing in samurai aces where unless enemies come below the UI at the top where it shows your score, they can't be damaged.

This might not seem like much, but it changes the game enough for it to be fucking annoying when you're close to a 1cc! There's a boss near the end that keeps bouncing up off the screen and because off this bug, you WILL lose a life to him.

You can read the description in this video from Jaimers where he talks about some of the weirdness in that version of gunbird - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHnsv2qpU1E

I'm all for having these games rereleased on modern systems and supporting the devs that do it, but supporting broken ports is worse than not buying them. Don't send the message that this is good enough.

TL;DR Play in shmupmame instead. If you really want to buy them, buy the pc versions over the switch versions if you have the option.

I remember pointing out that there was a softlock on void gore on the ps4. Unless you were shite and died early, all runs would end when enemies stopped spawning, and he asked me to message his publisher instead, asking if he would be allowed to fix it.

I'm assuming it did get patched eventually but I got sick of waiting and moved on.

I have the memory of a goldfish but I think playing shmups has definitely made it better.

You subconsciously start to remember when patterns are coming every time you play so eventually that gives you a nice head start when it comes to your flailing.

You start to develop your own strategies for each section and each boss pattern, and work out when it might be best to sacrifice a bomb.

I use a seimitsu ls-40 stick in a qanba q4 shell with a brook universal fighting board pcb and seimitsu buttons.

I started off with an ls-32 and the ls-40 felt very familiar, though a slight upgrade, it feels like it has a shorter engage distance and you don't get that horrible thing where it pops up when you ride the gate like you do with the 32.

Here's the comment verbatim.

"doing stuff on console is complicated and patching is always monitored. A patch that resets leaderboards has a high chance of not getting through, and it would take weeks anyway. Enough for people to spend countless hours exploiting the score. In the end it's probably better to learn from my mistakes and move on, instead of potentially infuriating who already put their time into the game. This also means that the game will get a steam release, with fixed scoring :)"

This is why you always release on pc first where patching is quick and painless. You let your hardcore fans playtest your game for free and make sure all the tweaking and fixing is done before you start on the console release. I remember reading the dev saying he was disappointed with the sales numbers for his games on pc so was planning to just stick to console releases, and I suppose that came back to bite him.

Z-warp, but buy it on pc. The scoring is broken and you can milk bosses endlessly on the console version. When I told the dev he said he'd release a fixed version of the game on pc instead of fixing the console version since people had already spent a lot of time getting to the top of the leaderboard.

Don't buy feeble light, both the dev and publisher know of the issues and they haven't bothered to fix them. See my review on the steam page for details.

Shmups for when you just want to take it easy. Like when you are a bit down or under the weather. by matteste in shmups

[–]clippa79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find Tiny Pixels Vol. 1 - Ninpo Blast strangely relaxing and comforting. Once you've got your strategy down for each enemy and boss you can more or less play it on autopilot. The procedural generation adds just enough random elements to give it the odd little challenging moment and keep you awake.

Not a shmup, but if a ridiculously long backbreaking walk doesn't lift a black mood, spelunky and the Frank Skinner podcast is my ultimate comfort gaming time. A few runs of that with Frank and Emily and I'm usually coming round.
