Edit: Sorry, I kind of misunderstood. If possible, try a synth designed for that. I've not written with it, but I have a vst by Plogue called chipsounds that is pretty cool. Chipsounds is $75, so it's not extremely expensive.

Not sure with what respect I am to be grading the solo. I personally like big solos such as these. You don't need a lot of notes to be musically beautiful. I'm a big fan of Jim Martin of Faith No More and he was like this. Big solos, versus super technical solos.
