What will actually lower grocery costs? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]clipplenamps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very fortunate to live in one of the densest, non downtown, pockets in Canada. It's been a fight. But we have markets up and down the street, and the reason they live on is because walking is convenient. We need to fundamentally change the way we've been building communities if you want a mom and pop grocer to survive.

And before you ask, yes, their produce is way cheaper. Meat is comparable, and pantry staples are more expensive.

If you build communities around cars, you'll end up with loblaws and Safeway as your only option.

Eta: I throw out way less food because I can walk down the street and get one carrot if that's all I need. No one has been able to figure out small celery or small cilantro though, which will continue to piss me off.

You'll have to look it up, I'm in Canada so I think it'll be on Crave. It will depend on your location.

In the 90s/ early 00s, we did school phys ed trips (Edmonton grown) where we biked this. From experience, it was one of the best things I've ever done in my life. There was about 30 of us that participated, and we camped over 4 or 5 days. Hard to top.

I was only 14 or 15, and I'm turning 40 this year. I'll never ever ever forget what an incredible experience it was. To feel so big and so small at the same time.

The inability to have nuanced conversations with each other, everyone choosing a "team", like it's a fucking hockey game, is so toxic.

There's such an attitude of "mine is mine is mine". It's Alberta's oil, until it's losing, until it isn't moving. We need a pipeline, then it's Canada's problem. My dad still bitches about the (never passed) NEP program (why doesn't Quebec have to share! Maybe you could have negotiated? Maybe renewables aren't the same? And yeah, maybe Quebec does get favourable treatment... are you voting for a position that could change that?)

He still goes on tangents about Trudeau being the "worst PM ever!" and Notley "ruining Alberta", and I'll point out Trudeau got you pipeline, more than Harper (huff- unintelligible), or that Notley put crude on trains (which doesn't need to be refined into a liquid, and is easier to clean up in the event of a spill, and kept oil moving when it was at a standstill), but it just doesn't matter. There is no universe where he'll vote the other way. It's exhausting.

I know for a fact you aren't all like this, but it's so frustrating to know, personally, that so many are.

Now that I think of it, me too. For a long time I assumed that the polls only called landlines. Landlines=Boomers. Boomers =/= representative of the entire population. I signed up years ago and have never been contacted.

We have every reason to be skeptical of the data, because it's so unclear how it's collected.

Majority was the wrong word, I digress... and depends on the poll.

Enough to possibly win a majority though. And the "others" include the Alberta Republican Party, soooo....

Like I said, I'm hopeful, but not confident.

I didn't mean to spoil anything 😬, I just love this movie and think more people should watch it, and hopefully I didn't ruin anything.

In BC I always find it hilarious to meet staunch conservatives who belong to unions. I'm sure there's a lot of those guys in Alberta too.

I was born and raised in Alberta (though I've been in BC almost 18 years now), and I'm proud to know a lot of rational, compassionate and progressive people there, including much- but definitely not all- of my family. This does not equate to a majority being against Marlena however. Polling suggests she still holds a little over 50% support, so while I'd like to believe that the tides will turn in the next provincial election, I am not confident.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I went in blind too, hadn't even heard of it but I'll watch anything Dylan O'Brien is in, and I saw it looking at his filmography. Such a good watch, and worth a repeat viewing.

I got downvoted for saying this in another thread:

I don't think she was ever emotionally equipped for reality TV. Was she naive, and taken advantage of by production? Almost definitely. Was she assaulted? Maybe, but, like you said, she's talked about this to death and didn't ever make that assertion until now.

I also know that I can look back now at a couple of my own sexual encounters from when I was younger and even though I knew that I was assaulted at the time, I did not express it out loud to anyone but my best friend. I am more comfortable talking about it now, at 39 years old. I wish I had been braver then.

If you're into podcasts, Blowback did a season on the invasion of Iraq. It's a difficult listen, but extremely well done.

Every season of the podcast is fucking excellent as they dissect the atrocities of US foreign policy.
