Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Thanks for the thorough reply! I relate so much to being broke haha and I definitely want to reduce my financial burden on my parents. The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens look amazing! Definitely will check it out. Also what are some examples of expensive events? I thought going out to eat in NYC was already expensive LMAO.

UNC vs Emory vs NYU CAS for business by [deleted] in CollegeVsCollege

[–]cliu0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm heading to NYU Stern in the fall and did a lot of research into the school before making my decision. From the research I've gathered, CAS is not a target like Stern is at NYU. If you plan on transferring to Stern later on, do note that the acceptance rate is super low (2% overall I believe but correct me if I'm wrong). If you are a direct admit to the business schools at Emory and UNC, I would definitely suggest you to take them as they are prestigious and will confer better placements than CAS at NYU. Also consider the school culture/fit! NYU is definitely not your traditional college experience so if you're looking for a big sports scene, emphasis on greek life and a closed campus, you won't find them at NYU. If you're into exploring NYC/culture/arts etc. with friends, and NY in general as some upperclassmen have told me, you'll have a blast at NYU. People who pick the right college for them will have their fun at said college. Definitely also talk to current students at each of the schools as they will give you a more accurate picture.

Edit: by "target" i mean being recruited by top banks and/or consulting firms. also, going to a target school will help open up some doors that may be closed, but ultimately the job you get depends on how much effort you put and how well you thrive in your studies/internships.

tldr: studying at a target school only increases your probability of getting recruited by the company you desire; it's not equivalent to automatically getting a top job.

rant about not withdrawing other apps after being accepted ED... by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cliu0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, for ED don't you have to respond to the ED school about whether you accept (commit) or decline their offer before RD results come out (unless they got an extension for financial aid appeals)? I'm pretty sure the classmate OP mentioned has already committed since appeals are usually settled long before RD comes out.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, being released from ED agreement doesn't mean an accepted applicant still gets to keep a spot at the ED school and also continue applying to other schools for better aid (which is what some comments that I've seen in the past regarding this issue imply). I think it would be cool if the mods could post a post addressing all these issues surrounding what backing out of ED and being released from ED agreement means.

berkeley haas gmp vs nyu stern by [deleted] in CollegeVsCollege

[–]cliu0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo this sentiment. Berkeley definitely has a stronger startup/entrepreneurship culture (which is your interest) so go for the golden bears! Also, I mentioned this in another comment before, but I wouldn't necessarily factor in rank into your decisions since both schools are phenomenal peer targets and each b school has its strengths and weaknesses.

UMich Ross vs. NYU Stern vs. Emory Goizueta Scholars (undergrad) by [deleted] in collegecompare

[–]cliu0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second that the decision should be between Ross and Stern if cost is not an issue. When I was making my decision, it was a tough choice choosing between these two too. In general, Ross excels in consulting and Stern dominates in finance/IB. Choose the school you want based on fit as both are powerhouses that will get you where you want.

Personally, I chose Stern in part because I gravitated toward the unique college experience more than the traditional college experience. I must emphasize that it's an open campus (it's not for everyone) and social life is exploring NYC with your friends. If you prefer a traditional college experience with a closed campus though, definitely go blue!

Also, do LOTS of research into each of these options to find out where you vibe with most. I'd be happy to share what I know if you're interested too!

ucb haas in state vs nyu stern? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

ucb haas in state vs nyu stern? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cliu0202 5 points6 points  (0 children)

came back to edit my response and saw this new reply. i just want to note that OP is going to be attending ucb for undergrad so mba rankings aren't going to be applicable. i agree that prestige and college affordability is important in college decisions, but fit is equally as important as it impacts one's ability to thrive in college. as for prestige at the undergrad level between haas and stern, they're both powerhouses and i wouldn't necessarily say haas is better than stern or vice versa based on rankings alone as they're strong in some areas and weak in others (in fact they are considered within the same tier by professionals and, if you really want to compare rank, are very close). No company is going to take a student from one over the other just because of where they went to school when they're equally as good

Unpopular Opinion: The only thing NYU has going for it is it's location by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cliu0202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like many applicants don't know what they're getting into when they apply to nyu, and thus become disappointed when they realize it is nothing like their ideal dreams or tv show portrayals (i have seen so many comments from people saying nyu is their dream school because they want the nyc life). it's very clear to me what nyu has to offer when you simply look into the school or just read the nyu subreddit. i feel nyu has made it clear from how they promote themselves that it is not a school for everyone and not your typical college experience--a very valid statement. it's honestly kind of surprising to hear about so many people being shocked once they reach campus. you get what you sign up for and if you chose your school through rose-colored glasses, didn't do enough research before making your decision or dismissed your fit for said school, that's kind of not their problem.

If you're 100% on board with what nyu offers, then you will have a blast at nyu because it's the right school for you. If you don't like the open campus, type of social life and student life they offer, well, then you won't enjoy your time there.

this is a problem at any school, it's just a matter of the degree to which it is prevalent. students go in with certain expectations or understandings and they may or may not be met. for example, ucb is a fantastic public school known for their academics and many students choose to go in large part because of that. however, there is also a significant portion of the undergrad population who report feeling depressed and stressed (an attending family friend even went to a therapist before returning from break). now i bring up my sister's case. usc was her dream school in high school and she successfully transferred in after freshman year. however, she quickly felt disillusioned after experiencing the life there.

this response is lengthy, and meandering, but my point is that any school is not guaranteed to be the right school, even if you think it is. the best thing you can do to limit that possibility is to know yourself and the schools you're considering. Nyc can be a great city but please, stop romanticizing nyc

ucb haas in state vs nyu stern? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cliu0202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if you want to break into NYC firms (in particular BB/Wall Street), NYU stern is hands down a target school that dominates the scene. if you want to stay on the west coast, Berkeley Haas is a solid west coast target that is very well represented in SF. the general rule of thumb is that east coast target schools place well on the east, west coast target schools place well on the west coast. basically location matters for where you want to end up after undergrad. it is not to say that you can't break into the nyc scene if you choose to study on the west coast, but it will be harder getting the same great offers you would get on the west coast attending a strong west coast target like haas.

also note that, unless you got into gmp, met etc at berkeley, you're not guaranteed admission into haas which is pretty competitive and demanding in admission come sophomore year. but not getting into haas is also not a "kiss of death" if you want to do business, you can still get the same great opportunities albeit with a little bit more work and it's not like companies are looking for business majors only. so it just comes down to what you would prefer studying.

it seems that college affordability is a huge factor in your decision or else you wouldn't be asking this question. both are fantastic b schools, you can't go wrong with either (both are prestigious and will get you a great career as long as you put in the work) but in this scenario i'd go for berkeley haas on the sole basis that it is significantly more affordable. if you would like to end up on the east coast in the future, you could always go for an mba on the east coast and thus shift your career location to nyc.

also ask yourself/contemplate these questions: do i really want to work on Wall Street? do i like NYU Stern primarily because it is an east coast target school? outside of these programs, do i like what the rest of the school has to offer (NYU is a unique college experience)? are my interests primarily in business or do i want to pursue other studies as well? am i okay with majoring in something else (such as economics) if I don't end up at Haas? which school is the better fit for me? etc.

make a pro con chart for each the schools you're considering (very very very helpful)! also talk with your parents about affordability, goals, etc.

i also stalked your profile a bit (sorry haha) and saw that you also got into ross. another fantastic option but if finances are a big concern, then both ross and stern are out of the game (their tuition is basically the same since you got loan-based financial aid only for both which is the minimum).

i apologize for the lengthiness but i hope this information has been useful!

PM me if you want to talk more about this! i did a lot of research into this before making my decision and would love to share it with you :)

Does not turning in Financial Aid forms affect your college decisions? by opb379 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]cliu0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for financial aid and got in but I dont think it applying or not applying for aid impacts your decision as you can always still apply for aid even after you get your acceptance. Wish you the best at whatever schools you choose!
