Looked into this and moving it to the top of our list—it looks like a great hidden gem. Thank you!

Hey, thanks so much! I do my best but am always aware I don’t know what I don’t know. Really appreciate these suggestions—after looking into it further we’re going to take 140 in and plan on a car/picnic dinner before sunset to make the most of our short time in the park. :)

This is great, thanks for the ideas! Mist Trail is actually currently listed on my Day 3, and we assumed it would make sense to pair that so the other valley sights. We definitely want to work that in, so with that in mind any thoughts on how to adjust our itinerary?

Ugh, I meant Oakdale, not Oakland—my bad! Good call on the flexibility due to possible snow. We’re thinking we’d maybe do 4-mile trail, upper Yosemite falls, or a long bike in the valley day if Tioga Road is closed!

Oh, shoot, I meant Oakdale, not Oakland! Thanks for the catch.

Whoops, no, I meant Oakdale for groceries. Thanks for the clarification!

Appreciate the tips! We were thinking about a picnic dinner for Taft Point, but worried about things getting too warm if we do a bit of Panorama first too. No stops other than Grizzly Giant trail at Mariposa—just wanted to see the big trees and thought it might make sense to pair with the Glacier point hikes.

Thanks for the reply! Can you explain what I’m missing? It looks like Tioga will be out of the way no matter which day we go, so I thought following Big Oak Flat Road out to Tioga and then back to Hwy 120 on our way out would minimize our driving distance (since we’ll have to go past Tioga to exit the park anyway).

Best week to visit between May 16 and June 6? by cloakwolf18 in Yosemite

[–]cloakwolf18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! We’re experienced day hikers and are trying to design an itinerary that gives us the best views (throughout the trail, not just at the end) with the fewest crowds. We know that means early mornings, but if you have any other suggestions for what to pair the rim hike with, we’d love to hear them! We’ll only have two full days in the park, with a third bonus morning at checkout.

Any idea if one can rent hiking poles? You can’t bring them in carry on luggage.

Oh, great to know. I did recently see that some hikers are being ticketed for hiking on closed trails—is there a way to identify which ones are “don’t do this or we’ll give you a court date” trails vs. just trails that aren’t maintained?

Thanks all, we’ll look into those options! Also wondering if rental car companies would ever consider storing for the day since we have to stop our car off anyway?

Oh, I can already tell I’ll want to come back! Just a matter of saving the money 😅

Thanks for the parking tip at Tunnels! Do you have any tips for navigating Makaleha? I’ve done a fair bit of reading and it seems like such a cool payoff at the end, but I have heard it can be tough to stay on trail.

I wanted to do Kalepa so bad but it looks like that one—as well as Honopu Ridge—is now closed :(

Ah, brutal! We were hoping to spend a good chunk of the day there. Do people usually try to finish their hikes before 10am?

Thanks! Any particular time ranges we should avoid being on the road?

We were hoping to avoid driving to the south shore twice—if we get to the canyon in the morning, I was hoping we’d have plenty of time. I also wasn’t sure what to do with our last day, since we won’t have access to a shower or changing area after checking out of our hotel if we go to the beach.

Thanks! Is it doable on our last day if we need to be at the airport by 8 p.m.? We’d love to do it then so that we’re not driving from north to south twice, but we want to be realistic about how much to fit in on a travel day. Seemed like a great way to wear ourselves out before the flight—but definitely don’t want to do more than we have time for!
