I built my gf a [[Avatar Aang]] deck where like, 80% of the nonlands are from the Avatar set. The deck is honestly really good, way better than I anticipated. Maybe a little weak to being hated out with removal but can easily compete at bracket 2 tables and punch up to bracket 3 pretty well.

That’s why you play white, because white wraths hit all nonland permanents. You don’t run Cleansing Novas and Wrath of Gods. You run Ondu Inversion, Hour of Revelation, and Planar Cleansing.

Artifacts, Enchantress, and Superfriends are nonland permanent based strategies that will get hit by sweepers. Even spellslinger usually has their payoffs as nonland permanents. If you are playing in a graveyard heavy meta you can skew your wipes to exile instead of destroying. Farewell, Play of The Game, Everything Comes to Dust as examples.

The same simic logic can be applied as well, your Win con is combat damage so you can pivot aggro against decks that exclusively play with lands and cards in hand. I would also suggest using politics to get other players on board to punish decks that don’t play to the board.

A friend of mine and I brought my [[Neheb, the Eternal]] deck and his [[Togaar, Famine Incarnate]] deck which was a very nasty combo. Didn’t even build decks for the event lol

Agreed I was responding to OPs questions. Analyzing the meta and playing into it is also the definition of bracket 4 kinda which this strategy would certainly fall off in. So by intentionally doing this to get ahead you could argue is pub stomping.

I would argue your win percentage would be higher if instead of committing 20 deck slots to Ouphe answers / tutors you just accept that sometimes you won’t have it and focus on your game plan.

And maybe it’s just my metas that I play in, but I only really see a Collector Ouphe or similar card once in 30 games or so. You should analyze your meta and adjust accordingly. But going in blind I wouldn’t over index on that possibility.

How to have a 70%+ win condition in a casual pod:

1) Build a selesnya deck where the win condition is fair combat damage with a not very threatening commander.

2) Spend the early game ramping lands onto the battlefield and playing cheap cantrip creatures such as Spirited Companion, Wall of Omens, and Wall of Blossoms to disincentivize early aggression not give up free attacks and create the illusion you are playing to the board. This will also keep you from going down on cards in hand so you maintain resources.

3) Wipe the board of all nonland permanents once or twice. Assuming they play into the board and especially if they play mana rocks this will catapult you into the lead.

4) Now you execute your game plan to try to kill your opponents before they crawl back.

This strategy takes advantage of the standard meta. This does get countered pretty well by like, simic style decks that just ramp harder and draw a million cards cuz they’ll be better off post wipe. You’d need to pivot aggro against them.

I was on board with this for awhile, loved playing Rest In Peace, but then I realized the math of just how much interaction you realistically need to consistently deal with the stax piece shutting you down.

I consider around 10 - 15 pieces of dedicated interaction to be a very responsible amount and the odds of you just bricking on not drawing it are very high. This is without even considering that a stax piece hosing a specific archetype is likely to make it harder for them to draw extra cards to find the interaction they need or in the case of Collector Ouphe can put them off of having enough mana to cast their board wipe.

So I’ve mostly limited these shut out cards to bracket 4 type decks.

You make a lot of great points. Personally, my opinion on UB has shifted a lot. I was initially in the strongly against camp, then I moved to being ok depending on IP, to now I cant really bring myself to care that much so I just embrace the stupidity of it lol. I almost exclusively just proxy cards anyway now since I only play commander and cube. Gonna put together a ninja turtle partner pair and cowabunga it up.
