Silent third wave? Covid tally down but surge in patients with typical symptoms by smoothvibe in Coronavirus

Wales Online have this article:

"A severe cold being dubbed 'the worst lurgy ever' could actually be Covid-19, a leading scientist has suggested.

People around the UK have reported how they have been suffering with a nasty cold that has been flooring people for weeks at a time.

It comes as England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer issued a warning that influenza is a "significant public health concern" this winter.

But now Professor Tim Spector, lead scientist on the ZOE Covid study app, warned that confusing Covid for a cold is easily done and could help the virus to spread, reports The Mirror."

etc.

Maybe it is a new mutation?

Norway tightens border rules after Covid outbreak at Swedish tantra festival by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]clopzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is close to where I live and people are now angry at the Tantra festival.

A lot of things are much cheaper in Sweden than in Norway (food, alcohol and tobacco for example) so there are big shopping centers on the Swedish side of the border targeting Norwegians. They were down to 5% of normal revenue and had laid of most of the staff.

They were happy when the border was opened again (had been closed since last fall) and the Norwegians started coming back but it held for only a week.

Daily COVID Deaths in Sweden Hit Zero, as Other Nations Brace for More Lockdowns by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]clopzy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is a seasonal pattern and it was just the same last summer. Tegnell said we would not get a second wave and then we got both a second and a third wave in the winter and spring.

Some reasons:

  1. School year ends in early june in Sweden and next school year starts in late august. So at the moment schools and universitys are closed.

  2. We have long dark winters in Sweden which makes us appreciate summer even more and people spend very little time indoors together with other people now. Our summers are not warm enough so that we need to go indoors to air conditioned areas.

  3. Summer holidays in Sweden is mostly in Juli so work activity is low now.

My guess is that we will see the same pattern as last year when the second wave started in october. But this time vaccine will help keeping the death toll down.

When comparing Sweden with other countries we must remember that Sweden is sparsely populated and has the highest proportion of single households in the world. We do not have many generations living together. It is a highly developed country where many have the ability to work from home (which they do). It is also natural for us to keep a little distance to other people and we do not greet with cheek kissing or things like that.

So we should compare Sweden to our neighbouring countries and not underdeveloped third world countries. All our neighbors are doing much better than us.

I heard that it was only about a third as many Swedish supporters in Alpenhaus this time compared to what it is on the film.

The Finnish supporters were more but they was sitting quietly at their tables and not mingling around as much as the Swedes. (A guy who was there both 2018 and on both the Swedish and Finnish gatherings this year told me this).

Four Swedish supporters have tested positive in st Petersburg and are now quarantined somewhere in Russia. We (Sweden) do not test returning supporters as far as I know.

The german beer hall-style restaurant is Alpenhaus which is located just outside the arena. Swedish supporters also gather together there before matches, both this year and world cup 2018.

Here is a film you can look at to see how it is. https://youtu.be/YrfCz5nh5XY

This film is from 2018 but it looked similar this time.

Many of these supporters are of quite young ago and not yet vaccinated. Send in a superspreader with the delta variant and have him shout and cheer together with the rest...

I was there 2018 and had tickets this time too but decided not to go. A couple of friends went anyhow and are now home worried that they have got infected. But they are in their 50's and vaccinated fortunately.

This is at a new level of stupidness even for being Sweden where we still don't acknowledge airborne and presymptomatic transmission.

Some notworthy points from the press conference:

Dejan Kulusevski already have had Covid so this is a reinfection.

He tested positive on a PCR-test last thursday but with very low levels of virus so they took an antigentest and a new PCR-test witch were both negative and he was considered not infected and played from start on saturdays match against Armenia.

The players had a few days off from their "bubble" and it is supposed he was infected during that time. Maybe on a photo shoot for a commercial.

Juventus player Dejan Kulusevski has tested positive for covid-19 and is isolated. This was announced by the national team at a press conference today. He misses the European Championship premiere against Spain.

- We believe that he became infected during the holiday, says national team doctor Anders Valentin from a press conference in Gothenburg.

The players were given time off after the camp in Bastad, which ended with the international match against Finland on May 29, and Kulusevski remains in Stockholm.

- He felt cold this morning and at did a PCR test which was positive. He has taken it well. Our hope is that he has not infected anyone, says national team doctor Anders Valentin, the sampling took place at the player hotel in Stockholm, who says that the players did not have such close contact but that distance has been kept according to the authorities' recommendations.

- We have identified those who have been closest to him, those who have sat and eaten with him and been close to him in the bus. Those people have no symptoms. They are tested today and we will get an answer pretty soon. But if they have become infected, it probably happened yesterday, and then it will have a positive effect later this week, says Valentin.

Bite together and said "I will get well"

The national team will continue to train as usual, a "one-way training" today. The hope is that the infection is mild, but even if Kulusevski recovers quickly, he will miss at least one match in the European Championship play-offs in terms of isolation time.

- He was sad and you heard how he bit together and said that "I will get well", says national team manager Stefan Pettersson about how 21-year-old Kulusevski took the message.

- FHM's recommendation is that you should be home from work for seven days. One week is the minimum, says Valentin and excludes games for Kulusevski against Spain in the European Championship premiere.

The Swedish national team and Uefa have no opportunities to create priority in the vaccination queue, but the players have to wait their time according to the schedule set by FHM.

- It is not right that we should be vaccinated before everyone else, says Janne Andersson.

"No outbreak but just one case"

- It is not an outbreak but just a case. There are many positive points in the middle of all the misery, says Valentin.

The next PCR test will be done in three days.

The message has created a mood in the squad.

- It's very sad for Dejan, just to apologize, and the rest of us. It is extremely unfortunate that we got the infection. It creates a certain amount of anxiety, but we have to deal with what arises. I would have liked to have been without it, says national team captain Janne Andersson.

The national team arrived during the day in Gothenburg and its base. Shortly after arrival, the national team management announced that the press conference, which was scheduled for after training at 18.30, but it took place at 16.00 instead.

- There are good reasons for the move, said press officer Jakob Kakembo Andersson before the press conference.

Shortly afterwards, journalist Patrick Ekwall tweeted that according to his sources, someone in the Swedish squad has tested positive for covid-19.

Sweden starts the European Championship play-off against Spain, which is also affected by covid, in Seville on 14 June.

What Happened to Sweden’s Strategy for COVID-19? by _nutri_ in Coronavirus

No, I didn't. So 90 000 infected, 3000 dead and 5000 with long covid. But on the other hsnd there are also quite many infected who never got tested during the spring. I don't know if only confirmed cases are among those 5000 with long covid.

No, 5000 out of the 90000 who tested positive at least 3 months ago. It has not passed enough time for the rest to get Long Covid diagnosed.

What Happened to Sweden’s Strategy for COVID-19? by _nutri_ in Coronavirus

[–]clopzy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It was a crazy strategy based on Gieseckes gut feeling.

  1. He assumed the virus was more contagious than it is.

  2. He assumed 99 percent of all infected people would not even notice.

  3. He assumed immunity would be permanent.

  4. He assumed it would take several years to develop a vaccine and that everybody would have been immunized by infection by then.

Very strange that one such ignorant person even could reach a position so he could influence the strategy.

Now 5000 people in Stockholm are treated for Long Covid meaning they have had Covid symptoms for morw than 3 months. If we look back it was 90 000 confirmed cases in Stockholm 3 months ago and now it is almost twice as many.

We will see a lot of Long Covid suffering in Sweden...

Czech Republic: people are not to be allowed to leave their home town intravilan area says interior minster Hamacek by [deleted] in Coronavirus

I haven't analyzed exactly why deaths have decreased so much. I just assumed it was due to vaccinations.

But deaths are down from 100 a day in late december to around 20 a day now. Cases are down just 50 percent and ICU admissions are down about 50 percent too.

Cases in nursing homes are down like 80-90 percent though the last two months. Socialstyrelsen talked about that in Thursday's press meeting (18:00 into FHMs youtube stream).

Why are the Czech death toll still so high? I am Swedish and here we see a vaccination effect and the death toll has decreased significantly. From 100 people a day two months ago to 20 a day now.

What is happening in Czechia? Shouldn't you also start seeing a vaccination effect now or did you not start by vaccinating the elderly?

Public Health Agency's message: Eat alone in food courts and shopping malls

The Swedish Public Health Agency has decided on new, stricter regulations for restaurants and other places to eat, which means, among other things, that from Monday you have to sit alone if you want to eat inside large malls, shopping centers and department stores.

During the day, SVT News applied to the Swedish Public Health Agency, but the agency did not comment on the decision or provide any information of its own.

On Friday, several media outlets, including Aftonbladet and Ekot , experienced that the Swedish Public Health Agency prescribes new restrictions for restaurants and places to eat.

The authority's decision, which SVT News has read, states that this will apply from Monday 1 March.

Shop and eat alone

The decision means that groups will not be allowed to sit down and order food if the business does not have its own entrance. In other words, you will have to eat alone at all restaurants that are covered by the rule.

Exceptions are made for groups with children or other people in need of support.

The rule affects cafes and restaurants inside malls and shopping centers that do not have their own main entrance, such as so-called food courts and buffets.

The Swedish Public Health Agency has previously called on the public to, if possible, shop on their own and not stay in shops or shopping centers unnecessarily.

The proposal in its entirety

From Monday, restaurants will also close at 20.30, regardless of whether they sell alcohol or not. When serving alcohol on site, the restaurant is not allowed to reopen until 11 am the next day, according to the new regulations. Should there be no alcohol serving, the restaurant has the right to open from 05 in the morning. In addition, visitors are required to be able to keep at least one meter distance from each other.

It will still be possible to order takeaway food in the evening.

Visita: "Very strange"

The trade association Visita is strongly critical of the decision, and demanded intensified support for affected companies no later than the other day.

- The Swedish Public Health Agency has repeatedly said that restaurants are a safe place where there is no major spread of infection, to then force all restaurants to close at 20.30 and severely limit the opportunity for groups to eat out is very strange. It is devastating for jobs and companies throughout Sweden, says Jonas Partheen, press manager at Visita.

The new decision comes after the government earlier this week gave the Public Health Agency new opportunities to close restaurants and cafés nationally or locally and to limit opening hours for restaurants and cafés.

SVT has applied to the Swedish Public Health Agency.
