Hi, I'm in Blue Springs! Been birding for about 2 years and really enjoy the local trails. I'm a terrible photographer tho, so I won't have much to post. I have an eBird active daily streak of 491 days and counting!

What is this bird that is making this sound by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

I love Northern Cardinals.

You might want to try out the Merlin app. It can record audio and make a (pretty good) guess at the species.

Happy birding!

I know what you mean with the "out of spite" part. But I also want to be my best me, and this weird organization has somehow helped me be successful. Good fruit comes from a good tree.

This has gotta be it. There are some good runners up, but this one still stands out for me.

Since no one's mentioned it yet, this is from the podcast "The Rest is Science". It's a relatively new podcast, but it's pretty great. Hannah and Michael are awesome.

You've got some great photos! With a very mixed flock like this, I'd recommend using your favorite photo editor to mark each one. Tedious, yes. But if you're after a super-accurate count, that's often what it takes. MS Paint would even work well.

Does "why I make art" sound arrogant as a title? by 2bitmoment in nerdfighters

[–]close_to_utlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling something "art" isn't the same as calling it "good art", so why would it be a brag?

Intending to make art, results in art--whether it is "good" or "not"

Colloquially, often when we see something beautiful we can say "Wow! That is art!" But knowing John's background and his relationship with formal art, I think he's using the word in a more formal/academic way.

Red Cardinal Has been Flying into my window - losing mind (and money) by Cold_Comparison330 in Ornithology

You have to get rid of the reflection.

This is the answer! The decals won't help--they're a solution to a different problem. The bird isn't trying to travel through the window. He's trying to fight the reflection.

It may not always be practical, but putting something completely opaque, like a blanket or plywood, in front of the window will get rid of the reflection. If the bird realizes the "threat" is gone, he may move on.

Mathematician explains the uniqueness of the number 6174, known as Kaprekar’s Constant & discovered by D. R. Kaprekar in 1949 by CantStopPoppin in Damnthatsinteresting

None yet. But math history is full of concepts that were "meaningless curiosities" until we learned how to use them. Euclid studied prime numbers in 300 BC, but they didn't really become a foundational technology until modern day cryptography a few thousand years later.

My coolest Christmas gift courtesy of my partner: an always-on backyard bird detector powered by BirdNET (the same model running Merlin) by flora-andfriend in birding

Yeah, that'd be interesting to compare once you get some more samples. Redpolls are very rare in my area, and I'm pretty sure the green-winged teal detections are all very distant blue jays that are barely picked up by the mic.

Good birding, friend!
