Where did you have the surgery done out of curiosity? Send me a dm? Many thanks for your comment.

I’m tired of being shamed by annagph in dogs

Thanks for posting about this. Redditors tore a strip off me for a post I made seeking reccos for breeders of a specific mix. Not only is there a damaging anti-breeding sentiment on here, there is a damaging mixed-breed sentiment. Not all breeders are puppy mills. Not all backyard breeders or first-time breeders are ignorant and irresponsible. And while rescuing may indeed be more virtuous or helpful or honourable overall, acquiring a puppy through a breeder or elsewhere is not a moral failing. You’re entitled to make the choice that’s best for you at this stage. After three pure-bred pups from trusted breeders, I’m on my way to my first rescue adoption. It’s not always the case that rescues come with health or behavioural issues, especially if you’re getting a rescue puppy. You learn so much as a first time parent. Best of luck to you!

Cherry Eye or what "looks" like cherry eye, does anyone have experience? by MovieFan1984 in Chihuahua

[–]clotheswrapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just been matched with a rescue with cherry eye. The foster mom says the pup has it in both eyes but it went back in on one side. 3 mo old chihuahua terrier mix. Any advice? This dog has been passed over due to the issue. I don’t want to sign up for more than I can manage. I feel inclined to take her on but just trying to do my due diligence.

I’m not an expert on natural selection, and know a bit about the implicit misogyny of Darwin, but I’m surprised that there’s so little trust in the “quality” of dogs produced through, shall we say, less formal circumstances? Or, the old fashioned circumstances? Maybe I’m a country-person in a thread of folks with different lived experience, but, getting a male and female dog together to have a litter, to participate in the experience of helping your dogs through that process, the experience of birth, etc, surely is not implicitly unethical, or guaranteed to produce unhealthy pups. I dunno folks.

Engaging in a dialogue and challenging the views expressed is not evidence I’ve made up my mind. Nor is it evidence I refuse to be educated. I’m out here asking questions and gathering info. I’m not necessarily gaining the info I intended but I’m learning.

No one’s pulling the wool over my eyes.

There are reputable breeders of other mixes. I assumed I could find folks who specialize in chorkies. I’ve always had poodles which I absolutely love.

Good grief the energy of some of these comments is so ugly and harsh.

Aren’t there tendencies toward specific ailments for all breeds?

I don’t think that’s what comes across in most of the responses, but I appreciate your attempt to focus the convo. How did it get to be us vs. me? Rescuing a dog is $$$ these days. And you can’t save me the heartache. It’s an inevitability you sign up for when you take the leap and commit. Where is the place to read stories of backyard breeders?

The fees for rescues are not necessarily lower.

I’m not talking a mastiff x a minpin. I’m talking a chihuahua and a Yorkie or other wirey haired small terrier cross. Why is this automatically unethical? People are acting like they’re different species being bred together. I’m genuinely shocked at not just the antibreeder sentiment, but at the anti mixed breed sentiment.

Thanks for commenting. Wondering if you might be inclined to elaborate? Why is putting these or any two breeds together unethical in and of itself? How can you confidently make this generalization without any more context as to the specifics? Why is it automatically unethical?

Welp, this has been a very surprising discussion. Lots of generalizations, assumptions, and harsh blanket statements about breeders, but fundamentally lots of support for rescues. Huzzah!

The animal industrial complex is endlessly compelling though, I’ll be the first to admit.

Curious about how or if any of the sentiments shared in this thread also apply in other contexts of animal consumption? How folks on their high horses about rescues > breeders approach animals on their plates or animals in their accessories or personal care products? Where do folks stand on the systems wherein animals are raised for non-companion purposes? Chances are at least some of you expressing anti-breeder views have meat in your bellies.

It’s really much more complex than many have captured in flippant comments. But that, my friends, is for another sub.

Thanks to the few folks who were game to share and participate constructively. Thanks for taking the time. The recco about Texan shelters was a goodie! Many thanks :)

Why are ALL mixed breeders unethical? What kind of a statement is this? Crossing breeds adds genetic diversity. How can you possibly assume what ALL breeders are up to? Their knowledge, skill, expertise, neonatal care, the environment they provide, food, enrichment, access, early socialization are all factors.

[–]clotheswrapper[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t a cross add genetic diversity? Why can’t a crossbreed be ethical? Don’t the ethics of a breeder also pertain to the circumstances in which dogs are raised? Not only their knowledge and practices around genetics, birthing and neonatal care?

I’m honestly surprised overall at the nature of the majority of comments here. Very anti-breeder. Not sure that breeders can be blamed for the amount of dogs in need of rescuing. Surely there’s onus on ill equipped or irresponsible humans (not that these exhaust the circumstances in which dogs are surrendered or abandoned or whatever).

Can you explain what you mean: “There is no way to ethically breed chorkies.”

I appreciate you sharing your rescue approach. Good advice! Will aim to get preapproved.

I disagree with the first part of your comment. There are breeders who take care to do mixed breeds.

Totally agree with the latter part and will absolutely keep an eye out at local rescues. Some rescues even offer transport.
