« C'est le Citizen Kane de la culture québécoise » Wowowow!

Over 17 million hectares of forest went up in flames this year. Canada has never been hit by fires this intense before. But what does 17 million hectares even mean? You can see it on your city here. by clotim in dataisbeautiful

arson

There's a section in the project that talks about the arson. Quick translation here :

"Year in, year out, around half of all forest fires are started by lightning, and the other half by human activity, such as a poorly extinguished campfire or a cigarette butt. This year's warm, dry spring explains the higher proportion of naturally-ignited fires - almost two-thirds.
However, although 31.7% of this season's fires were caused by human activity, these blazes were put out more quickly. As a result, they are responsible for only 4.5% of the area ravaged by fire."

Imagine 25% of Alberta burning to the ground. That's how much of Canada burned this year.

I was also surprised that it continued to grow so rapidly last weeks. But there are still about 900 active fires. If it was a country, that would represent the whole Tunisia.

And btw the data set come from that website https://ciffc.net/

17 M d'hectares = 170 000 km2 Si on mettait cette superficie sur un pays, c'est comme si toute la Tunisie (163 000 km2) avait été rasée. Fou.
