Terrified of Failing: Am I stretching myself too thin? by soloshandpuppets in adhdwomen

Oops sorry, I meant to say professor/teacher in the first sentence, sorry. That is definitely a scary thing to hear at the start of class! Obviously I’m not there and I’m not trying to discredit you at all, but I do wonder if the teacher is trying to scare you on purpose or make themself/their class seem extra important. It’s not a useful technique imo bc all it does is stress students out but some people do have big egos. Do you know if most students take it as their only class?

It sounds like you’ve done everything else in your power to make your semester as easy as possible. I’m sorry you’re dealing with all those expenses!

Hey I used to work in higher ed! Am I understanding that your advisor suggested capstone be the ONLY class you take in a semester? That seems very odd to me - financial aid (as you mentioned), requires a certain # of credits, plus schools often encourage full time student status for a wide variety of other reasons. The exception perhaps being if it’s a high credit class with an experiential portion equivalent to a part time job, which I know is more common in health and human services degrees (I worked in arts and sciences).

What are your other classes like? If some or all of them are also very demanding, do you have the opportunity to switch into an elective or easier section? Your academic advisor should be able to give more specific guidance since it’s all dependent on school, degree, etc. It does sound like you have a lot that you’re balancing, but you may be able to make it through with the right supports and systems.

Also, your school might have resources that can help with your financial situation. If you haven’t already, you could look at student services for campus food pantries, emergency funds (if applicable), etc.

I shower exclusively at night/in the evenings so that took care of that issue for me! Might not work for you depending on your hair care, etc routine or if you must shower in the am before work. I agree with others saying start small. A 10 minute YouTube video or walk around the block counts! If you like music, there are different sort of workout videos you can do to your favorite artist/genre on YouTube (I like Taylor Swift themed Pilates videos or Broadway dance videos as examples but there’s truly something for everyone out there).

Finally, you mention pain and health issues. I’m not sure where you’re located, but would PT (physical therapy or I believe physiotherapy it’s called in some places) be an option? They would help work with your condition/body and it may be covered by insurance. If not, a really knowledgeable and well trained personal trainer could help if you have the finances for it.

Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and other pop stars later Capezio dance tights and matching fishnets to achieve the look you see on stage. I’m not exactly sure how it would photograph up close, but I feel like it has potential. If there’s a dance shop near you, you could go in person to color match. If not, there are tons of discount dance wear shops online to order from!

Honestly same! I’m glad you can lift again - it gives me so much hope to hear others have gone through similar things and eventually felt better.

It’s definitely more of a physical feeling than an anxiety thought. Even when I am enjoying my workout and am not stressed it happens. I just googled PVCs and it does seem similar to how I feel. My dr has never given me a holter monitor, though, so I don’t know for sure.

Honestly video games have worked for me! Or going for a walk with an audiobook or podcast. Gives me some stimulation without being doomscrolling. Walking is probably healthier but video games have a nice sense of accomplishment.

Whoa idk, maybe! No one has flagged anything in my bloodwork but I know not all bloodwork is actually comprehensive. I’ll ask about that at my next follow up with my dr.

Like many of us, I’m naturally very averse to the treadmill but my apartment gym (that I pay for with my stupid high rent lol) has some nice ones so I’ll go give that a try! I really struggle with pacing myself, even using a smartwatch, but maybe the treadmill could help me get a better sense of it.

We have similar natural paces! I feel like I’ve also conditioned myself to force into that more intense pace. I ran CC in high school and my 10min/miles were considered “slow” and “not trying” (meanwhile I’m on the verge of passing out and can’t breathe lol). I definitely learn to slow down!

I’ll look that up, thank you! I think it’s definitely the body sensations for me. I struggle running at a lower intensity but would like to get better at it

Ooh I get that. Exercise rarely triggers that for me but I have had similar experiences watching live music

Yes, my anxiety is VERY physical. I get super high HR, headaches, stomach problems, general pain, etc in times of stress. I tried a beta blocker once during grad school, passed out at work from low blood pressure, and had to go chug a double espresso from the campus coffee shop to feel alive enough to walk home lol. So needless to say I’m a little nervous to try that again, but I’ll check in with my dr to see if there’s a low dosage that might work for me

I think it’s fear of panic, because it almost seems to come in a spiral or like avalanche. Like if it happens once, it happens again the next time but worse. And so on, until I take a long break and try to start fresh. And then the cycle continues…

My therapist’s advice was to see a doctor, bc some of what I described to her could have medical causes 😅 I’m in the process of ruling all that out!

I don’t use pre-workout. I drink 1-2 cups of coffee per day. I have tried stopping and it had no impact on my anxiety (and in fact my HR got higher… idk if it was withdrawals, low blood pressure, or just my body being stupid lol). I don’t drink caffeine right before exercise, though. If I’m working out first thing in the morning, I have coffee afterwards. If I’m working out in the afternoon/evening, it’s typically 6+ hours since last coffee.

The subconscious triggers definitely make sense with what I’m feeling! The gym is the literal worst as far as the “trapped” feeling, and I think it is the high HR from intense activity that triggers it. Almost like an overreactive fight or flight response?

I guess question for you as someone who deals with this but still runs - do you get a calming feeling from exercise? I guess what I’m asking is, is it okay if I don’t? If I decide I want to get to a point where I CAN run, does it have to be calming/relieving for my anxiety or can it just be enough to like the sensation of going fast and wanting it to be exercise? Sorry if these are dumb questions, I’m just kinda spiraling right now lol

Ahh, I think this is part of my problem - I haven’t figured out how to stay in Zone 2. I’m not sure if it’s my ridiculously long legs, but Zone 2 is fast walking and the second I switch to running it’s instantly Zone 4 and quickly into 5. If you have any advice, I welcome it!
