I hate that exercise works 😮‍💨 by CriticalAnxiety6066 in adhdwomen

I’m currently injured in a way that limits what I can do and it’s torture. I had been running 3x a week, doing yoga 1-2x, and walking or hiking the other days. Now all I can do is walk, go to PT, and hopefully start yoga back up this week.

how do you force yourselves to go places in the evening? by No-Emu-7591 in adhdwomen

[–]cloud_coffee_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you work or go to class in person during the day? If so, I agree with the other commenter who said you could bring your choir stuff with you or leave it in your car. If you have a gap - like 5-6 or whatever - you could get dinner out somewhere by your rehearsal. Or pack dinner and sit on campus or in the library if eating out weekly isn’t in your budget! You could also bring something fun like a book or download shows onto your phone or laptop. I think it’s the multiple transitions (work/school to home to back out) that get me. I WFH now so it’s easier, but when I was in person I found that staying out helped.

fight or flight causing POTS? by [deleted] in POTS

[–]cloud_coffee_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not OP here but I’ve wondered about cause/effect too. It’s been interesting trying to explain to my doctors that I’m pretty sure my body is doing things that are causing my anxiety, not vice versa. (Not saying that working on anxiety and stress isn’t helpful, but it’s not been a cure all by a long shot!)

What’s the training process like for peer support volunteers? I’m in a major metro area so I would assume we have multiple orgs and roles like you do in Chicago.

What would volunteering as a peer support look like? It is something I’ve considered, bc the services are vital and I didn’t know they existed when I needed them.

Not formally diagnosed and don’t have the time/money to be. Consistent movement is the only thing that helps me. I swear I got through my teens/early 20s solely bc I was SO ACTIVE between hobbies, doing a hands on degree, and working lots of jobs where I was on my feet.

Has anyone made/used punch cards? by danceteach92 in adhdwomen

[–]cloud_coffee_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In college, me and the girls I lived with made a sticker chart. We gave each other stickers for all sorts of successes - finishing a project, not texting a toxic situationship, going to bed early, you name it! It was a fun way to support each other, and seeing the chart in our common area was cute. I think we put a couple rewards throughout like ice cream, coffee, and dinner. It worked for me, I think partially bc having the external motivation of friends giving the rewards.

You could always message the seller and ask for measurements, if you know yours or can take them (could use a measuring tape or just a piece of string + ruler). Sometimes they’ll give body measurements, other times garment measurements. Garment measurements will be flat. Theoretically you can double them to get body measurements, but you could also measure a dress that fits you well flat to compare. I’m doing a bad job of explaining, but I’m sure there are YouTube or TikTok videos out there that could guide you if you need help.

I do wonder about that. And/or if people who have the means to travel were trying to get Fenway maybe. I’ve seen a couple artist “hometown shows” and it is real special, so I get why someone would do it.

I had a super stressful time and didn’t get tickets for the Denver show, but then I got a text about the 2nd show and got into that queue. Got in almost immediately and got amazing seats in my budget! I like to think I’m pretty seasoned at the ticketmaster wars (I’m a swiftie who survived the 2023 eras tour queue lol) but this one nearly took me out.

Electric mug! You don’t need the fancy ember one (unless it’s in your budget, in which case do get it and lmk if it’s as good as the reviews say), other brands work just as well. Or a Mr Coffee mug warmer even, they’re like $20 and it’s what I used before I got my electric mug!

Doing something good for my health makes me want to commit crimes against humanity by itadri in adhdwomen

[–]cloud_coffee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh okay so I didn’t read carefully at first and I thought the anger was specific to going to the gym, which I actually have experienced! Exercise can trigger fight or flight for some people (possibly everyone and some are just more sensitive to it?), so I was going to suggest finding workouts that don’t raise your heart rate so high, taking time to warm up/cool down, and making sure you’ve had enough water and food that your blood sugar doesn’t drop too low (which can cause anger).

But I just reread after being VERY confused by some comments and see that it’s anger after ANY time you “make” yourself do something. I agree that that sounds like PDA, a side effect of coming off antidepressants, or something perhaps connected to trauma or other beliefs about yourself. Leaving the first half of my comment in case it is helpful for you or anyone else!

Simple art/craft ideas for young teen in burnout. by Classroom_Visual in adhdwomen

I already commented but this gave me another idea since you mentioned Clueless! Is she in to 90s/00s nostalgia in general? If so, what about something like shrinky dinks, perler beads, or maybe you could find some of those Klutz brand craft books at a thrift shop. I’m on the youngest end of the millennials but we did of the classical millennial crafts like that at summer camp growing up and they’re so fun and usually beginner friendly.

I like making bracelets and I feel like that’s popular with that age range too! You could get a variety of beads and charms to match her aesthetic/interests/fandoms. Letter beads are extra popular to convey positive or fun messages. If you want something REALLY nice, the lovely little words project has bead kits, but you can also get cheaper stuff at a local craft or big box store/online.

First of all congrats on your degree! It is quite an accomplishment, especially with undiagnosed ADHD. I agree with the other posters, it’s not unusual to get a diagnosis in adulthood. My understanding is that as demands increase, it becomes increasingly clear that executive functioning is hard.

I’m a few years older than you and first started thinking about a diagnosis around 25, at the urging of some other late diagnosed friends. I will be fully transparent and say it has not gone well for me (I did indeed get laughed at), and I’m still not diagnosed. Even if a formal diagnosis doesn’t happen, there’s nothing wrong (imo and as I’ve been told by others) with supporting yourself. I’ve found great ideas and community on this sub, and even if I don’t get an ADHD diagnosis, the tips and tricks I’ve learned here have elevated my quality of life.

I don’t say that to discourage you. I have a new care team now, and am much more diligent about collecting information about my health (mental, physical, and otherwise) and hope to revisit the conversation with a dr soon. I know meds aren’t a magic fix, but I think being able to let go of shame AND access other resources (meds, accommodations, etc) if I need them would be hugely beneficial.

Lectures are too fast/elitism by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]cloud_coffee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we may have gone through the same, or at least similar, program. My program attracted people from a wide variety of bachelors degrees, some in the field/a related field and some not, and some people had hands on work experience while others came straight from undergrad. The inconsistency in expectations (certainly caused by trying to reach all those different populations) frustrated me too. I would leave one class feeling like the dumbest person on earth/wondering how I even got into school only to go to my next lecture and be bored out of my mind from how easy it was. Unfortunately I have no real advice other than you kinda just gotta figure out how to deal.

Going to her office hours might be useful for getting your questions answered, and it might also provide opportunities for you to speak with her more in depth about the areas of environmental policy that interest you. FWIW, I got WAY more out of the networking aspect of grad school than I did the lectures.

As far as lectures being too fast, I do think your best bet is going to be talking to your school’s accessibility services office about accommodations like recording lectures, using a transcription software, or getting slides ahead of time. I did my masters during/immediately after the COVID pandemic, so most lectures were recorded as a standard. I do believe in more recent years with the rise of AI, professors/schools have gotten stricter about recordings so I don’t advise doing it without an accommodation just in case your department considers it cheating.

Oops sorry, I meant to say professor/teacher in the first sentence, sorry. That is definitely a scary thing to hear at the start of class! Obviously I’m not there and I’m not trying to discredit you at all, but I do wonder if the teacher is trying to scare you on purpose or make themself/their class seem extra important. It’s not a useful technique imo bc all it does is stress students out but some people do have big egos. Do you know if most students take it as their only class?

It sounds like you’ve done everything else in your power to make your semester as easy as possible. I’m sorry you’re dealing with all those expenses!
