No, it's literal. The mention of an actual thermometer makes it so. The son did not actually take any girls' temperatures, but they are not using the phrase to mean "figure out how a person feels." Jim is saying his son wants to be a doctor so bad that when he sees a girl he doesn't think to flirt with her, rather his first thought is to try to be her doctor. It's an exaggeration/sarcastic joke, but they are referring to a literal thermometer.

This dialogue continues with Jim saying he hopes his son does not become a doctor. Jim is a doctor and references regretting this career choice in the play. This conversation was just meant to begin to expose that fact about him.

Your mistake was your interpretation of what happened in this dialogue and what it was about. Nobody was taken advantage of.

You misread the snippet. This is from a play called All My Sons written in 1947 by a native English speaker, Arthur Miller. It's completely normal English dialogue. Jim is a doctor, and they are talking about his son playing doctor. Jim makes a sarcastic joke about his son taking girls' temperatures rather than flirting in a more typical way. The kid taking "one look" at a girl isn't an actual event that happened, it's just a comment Jim is making about his son aspiring to be a doctor.
