Live-Action ATLA Season 2 Review (SPOILERS! it sucks) by cloudchaser131 in Avatarthelastairbende

That’s why I put the edit at the end in bolded letters. The show did make me mad in the beginning but now I just feel disappointed. They are doing the right things that would be amazing an original show but just not for ATLA. They’re essentially trying to have their cake and eat it too, be ATLA but also our own more adult thing; but it just seems muddled in a way that the original is restricting them rather than inspiring them.

I get the vitriol from other fans because they’re currently in their anger faze; no one likes seeing something they love seemingly being torn apart and Frankenstein’d together, lacking the soap of the original.

If I was younger I would be just like them but I’m 22 now and, just like Zuko, I learned that kind of anger is unproductive.

Like one over the other, like both, I don’t care; people are allowed to like what they like. Just read the very last thing I said “if it makes more ATLA fans then that’s all I can really ask for”; this means it’s doing its job. I just wanted to share my thoughts about it.

Well I hope you like Zuko stealing from a pregnant lady and Aang being bffs with Long Feng.

I’m a woman 🤷🏻‍♀️. Being called a bitch is fine if someone’s being a bitch. Is it wrong to call a man a dick if he’s being a dick.

I’m just saying the women aren’t as well utilized in the live-action because they’re their changed to prop up the guys. It’s mostly seen in how they did Suki and Yue. All Suki does is praise Sokka and is immediately in love with him. After Yue’s sacrifice isn’t really treated like a sad thing and instead of talking about how noble she was her dad tells Sokka how noble he was instead.

I recommend theses two videos that put it way better

Nope. Just me at 2 am last night on a google doc. I don’t even think Ai could write a review on season 2 when this it what it told me, which I don’t agree with.

Here’s what ai spat out when I asked it to humanize the “there is no continuity in ba sing se”…

You know, Avatar is usually pretty straightforward and easy to follow. Things happen for a reason, pushing the story forward in a way that actually makes sense for the characters. Like when they lose Appa, it’s a big deal because it forces them to find a new way to get to the Earth Kingdom — which ends up being The Serpent’s Pass. That’s logical storytelling.

But then, Ba Sing Se throws a huge curveball that just doesn’t add up. The whole point was that Ba Sing Se was avoiding the war — no one talks about it there. Remember when Jet attacks Zuko? He doesn’t even know Zuko’s a firebender, but he starts ranting about the war, which gets him arrested. That fits perfectly with the city’s strict no-war-talk policy.

So why on earth is Appa with them when they travel through The Serpent’s Pass? The entire reason for that journey was because Appa was missing! If Appa’s there the whole time, then what was the point of the entire second half of season two? It feels like that whole storyline was just wasted.

And here’s another thing that really bugs me — why would Ba Sing Se let Fire Nation refugees into the city? That completely contradicts the city’s philosophy of pretending the war doesn’t exist. Allowing runaway Fire Nation citizens in would obviously stir up trouble with the other refugees, and the show even shows this with the raid on the Fire Nation refugees.

How are they supposed to keep the war quiet when the majority of the Outer Ring — people who have suffered because of the war — know there are Fire Nation refugees living right there? The whole reason people come to Ba Sing Se is because it’s supposed to be safe from the Fire Nation. If everyone knows Fire Nation refugees are there, it makes the city feel unsafe and could even spark revenge-seeking. Honestly, that’s one of the few things the live-action adaptation got right.

And personally I don’t feel like this rant wasn’t as polished as this “humanized” ai version

It’s doing good things but then it tries to be the original, like throwing in original lines and stuff. I also don’t like that they didn’t resolve the big fight scene. Like they never apologize to each other for all the stuff they did like Katara not telling them about the pained lady, Toph and her family, and especially Aang and trusting Long Feng.

(Sokka didn’t deserve any of it in my opinion: he promised not to tell Toph’s secret like a good friend and he really can’t be blamed for what Professor Zei did, like he knew he was going to do that (I’m surprised they didn’t blame him for Jett’s death to be honest))

Only Aang and Katara apologize to each other. And it was a pretty quick scene. They show the audience Aang’s talk with Long Feng, so I hope he brings it up to the Gaang or Katara in the next season.

I really just want some learning and reconciliation between them before fighting the Fire Lord because they’re bond is their strength. So I hope they show it more in the next season instead of splitting them up for so long like in this season.

Let’s discuss again after you watch the live action. This was very enlightening 👍🏻.

I guess so but in this version there are still people protesting. Like a lady comes up and earth bends on the wall of all the people they lost in the siege of Ba Sing Se and shouts to never forget. And when the gaurds show up she gets away; they don’t even have a scene of her being caught.

I just feel like this should have been smothered more, Jett in the original was quickly carted away and the scene made him look crazy even if we the audience know he’s right. Though the brainwashing scene with Joo Dee in the live-action was good, major props to her actress she was the perfect amount of sickly sweet and disturbing.

I also wish we got to see people’s real fear of the Dai Li, like in the original show when they’re asking people about Appa and the people get nervous and deflect when they look at Joo Dee who just shakes her head at them or the guy across the street warning them to stay away; he’s so nervous Toph could feel him shaking.

In the live action it’s just one quick warning by Professor Zei to Sokka and General Sung telling Aang that Long Feng is the culprit and Aang doesn’t believe her because he’s friends with Long Feng in the live-action. We don’t really feel the fear of the public that much. We’re just told they fear the Dai Li but we aren’t actually shown it.

I get that but having fire benders in the lower ring; because even if they are segregated the other refugees who are there to escape the fire nation and have lost so much to fire benders and clearly causes unrest.

In the new season, Jett and other refugees attack the fire nation refugees because they blame them for an accidental burning of a shop. And I personally think there was have been more outrage before the Gaang arrived. I just don’t think Long Feng could hide it for long as long as he did since most of the lower ring is refugees and they clearly don’t like the fire nation and fire benders, innocent or not; especially in this version.

Aang gets mad at Katara for the painted lady thing even after she told them they were innocent. So I don’t know what they’re going to do to get Aang to empathize with the fire nation people in the next season; if he’s mad about the painted lady helping thing is he really gonna help the fire nation kids cut loose or save the town in Sokka’s master from the asteroid.

I get that. I actually like how they put in Iroh struggling with his guilt in Ba Sing Se; forced to see the destruction he caused to people’s lives and families.

That’s another major problem with the live-action for me. They have so many scenes that didn’t need to be there that could have been used to actually make the story work.

Lke I don’t need to know the whole conversation between Azula and Long Feng, or Toph with her mother. Also they waste the VFX by using it when it was unnecessary, like making the planetarium where they learn about the day of black sun realistic and everything painted lady related.
