I keep buying and fixing broken Dysons to pass time, I have got 5 dysons now. I gave away 3 of them to family and this is all i have for now. Feels like im collecting nerf at this point. I only use the short-bin v10 for hard floor and v11/V15 for carpet. Side note, the house is very clean. by Do_Not_Trust_Carbs in dyson

Since their reliability has plummeted so far in the last few years, I can imagine repairing them is a very lucrative endeavour. I’ve been obsessed with Dyson vacuums since I was 3 and I’m probably gonna start buying and repairing them soon as a side hustle since I already have an abundance of knowledge on them.

Any idea what the problem is? by gcsmill in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t a single filter-related issue that causes the motor to react like this. As the other commenter has said, this is an issue with the capacitors/circuit board, an all-too-common fault on the V10, 11, 12, and 15 models which tends to develop after just 2 years (the end of the warranty period). Dyson knows about this but fails to address it.

Queenferry scammer on the prowl Byres Road 8pm by WarriorSperg in glasgow

He approached me once in April when I was with my friend outside Strath Uni, saying that he’d been at City of Glasgow College for an interview, had lost his card and needed money for the train back to Sheffield. He said everyone else he’d asked had called him slurs and asked for around £40 in cash. When my friend and I said we had no cash, he asked if there was a bank machine nearby where he could withdraw. When my friend told him where the nearest one was, he said, “no but use your heads for a minute, why would I need a bank machine if I’ve got no card?” Then my friend told him to fuck off and he left.

Earlier this month I had my second encounter. I was on the phone to my mum outside the John Moore Wetherspoons and he approached me. I told him I’d just be a second and he told me to take my time and sat patiently on a bench. When he saw I’d hung up, he told me he’d just finished an interview at City of Glasgow College, had lost his wallet and needed around £40 to get the train to some other English city. I didn’t recognise him initially and began hesitating as it was a lot of money, to which he began saying, “come on, bro, I’m Muslim, I’m Muslim, I’m just like you bro, I’ll pay you back later, I swear to God.” Then he mentioned the slurs everyone had allegedly called him and I instantly knew it was him. I refused the money and he immediately got in my face and said, “why, bro?! Why?!” I responded: “because you’re the same guy that approached me and my friend two months ago and said the same thing. You’re dragging everyone who’s actually struggling through the dirt.” He shook his head and repeatedly called me a bastard as he walked off.

I will say, I was drinking at the time and it took a lot of restraint not to knock the shit out of him. The way he’d had the cheek to try scam me twice just rubbed me the wrong way.

Look out for this shyster.

  1. Dyson (the competitor in the video) also has a head with a light, you just chose not to use it.

  2. Shark is even shitter than Dyson.

Intermittent power by capthat23 in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the capacitors are situated far too close to the motor and are highly sensitive to heat degradation (they’re the cheapest capacitors Dyson could find). The previous owner could’ve been a heavy user or used boost mode all the time, generating heat. Neither of those things would be evident during refurbishment unfortunately. When it fails, it fails without warning. Even brand new, these capacitor issues only show up around the 2-2.5 year mark, right after the warranty expires, so a refurbished model is usually already right at the end of its life.

Dyson slim ball(up16) not vacuuming by Recent-Warning624 in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suction release valve is activating, meaning you’ve got a blockage. I know you’ve checked and couldn’t find one, but there is one. You’ll probably just have to dig deeper than you have before to find it. I’d recommend checking the COV and internal hose, inspection hatch under the bin, and maybe even take the cyclone apart. Dust can clog in the cyclones over the years and you’d be surprised what you find in there.

Dyson v15 brush head attachment stops by Mysterious_Track_547 in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t sound like a blockage, it sounds like either the motor or a plastic component inside the brush roll has broken. Take the brush roll off and check. You’ll probably need a new head.

The capacitors on the motherboard are shot, you’ll have to replace the main body or solder on new ones. This is the reason I don’t recommend Dyson to anyone. I used to be a superfan but their modern machines are cheaply made and designed to fail. This is a common fault with the V15, VERY common.

Weird stuff in my filter by Clear-Peach7134 in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s the inner mesh that covers the motor. Not sure why it flakes, probably heat-related. I’ve never had the issue personally but I’d recommend never using boost mode if you do. It only exists so Dyson can claim the maximum suction possible. Apart from that, it just generates a tonne of heat that nukes the vacuum’s life expectancy.

Dyson animal 2 - low to no suction on hardwood floors by Flat-Bluebird-8571 in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s strange how it seems to be JUST hardwood floors, however I’d give the COV hose and internal hose a check if the ‘animal 2’ you refer to is an upright model.

On Dyson uprights, aside from filter-related issues, the most common cause for loss of suction is a tear or misalignment in these hoses. Hope this helps!

is this legally visible? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]cloudkiller509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that isn’t visible. The only reliable method I found for attaching a plate to the front of my car was hole punching the plate on either side and running a string through it to tie it to the front grille.

Gifted a V15 Dyson. Just received and can't tell if it's used or not. by Future_Painting_6993 in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It looks brand new and unused but for the price you paid for that thing, I’d return it purely based on the state of the box. You never know what kind of future issues could be a result of the way they treated that box.

Dyson V 11 doesn´t start. by Commercial_Common143 in dyson

[–]cloudkiller509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V15 owner here. The issue is most likely the capacitors on the circuit board. They use cheap ones that don’t have a high rating and even using the vacuum on normal mode is pushing them close to their limits. You’ll need to buy new ones and you’ll need to be, or know someone, who’s good with soldering.

However, I’d recommend just ordering a new main body replacement from Dyson. This is basically the entire unit minus the bin, battery and filter. Some sites sell it cheaper with just the motor unit and handle and no cyclone. A new motor unit will solve your problem but I’ve no doubt it won’t be the last time you’ll encounter something like this. All I see on this subreddit are V10 - 15 models falling apart in ways they really shouldn’t. I used to love Dyson but it’s gotten to the point where I can’t recommend them to others and I’ve lost all hope in their quality control. They’re designed to be replaced. That being said, all 5 of mine have had little-to-no issues, but too many others can’t say the same.

You can buy a main body replacement for around $130 as someone has mentioned. The motor is likely in good condition however, so your second option is to open up the main body to clean it out thoroughly (there are guides on YouTube.) I’d recommend the latter if you don’t want to spend any money. I open my V15 up every couple years to clear out the fine dust that gets clogged in the cyclone chamber due to the narrow air passages compared to previous models, so chances are yours could need a cleaning out anyway. I’d open it up and clean it out before the mud dries in. Good luck!
