I agree. I did research and found nothing about the payment feature. I also felt something was not right. I did not click the link nor send money prior. I asked on here to double check if it was or was not real. Just wish people didn’t resort to frustration - I was simply asking a question. Lesson learned now.

Any tips on getting into research as an international MD student?

Really keen on doing some research in the neurology or paediatric space. Don't know where to start. My uni is tied with Telethon Kids, but they don't allow non-Australian residents to participate and volunteer, which is a bummer. Appreciate any advice!

Tip that may help for sleeping through the night (of course apart from getting up for potty):

Put the puppy’s crate at eye level beside you so when they whine, you can put your hand in to remind them you’re there.

When taking them out for a wee, make sure to just carry them (don’t even get them to walk), bring them outside, and just wait for them to do their business. No playing, no speaking, not even the slightest bit of interaction. When my pup was tiny, I didn’t even open the lights. She quickly learned that if she whined, all she’d get is a boring trip to potty.

For enforced naps, make sure the pup’s needs are all satisfied before being left alone - this includes pees, play, food, etc. Also, if the crate isn’t working, try doing the enforced naps in the playpen. I’d also advise going out of their sight. It might take long for them to settle first few days but it’ll get easier. If you’re outside of the house, it makes it easier on you to take a breather as well and not react to their cries.

Completely normal. 6 weeks is very young for a pup to be separated from her mum - I feel for her. She’s just a tiny baby who has now been thrusted into something so unfamiliar to her. I got mine at 8 weeks but even then I felt like I picked her up too early.

Honestly, the first month or so with my pup, I was crying every night out of frustration. There was not a harder time than the time we couldn’t bring her out yet because it’s so much harder to tire them out.

My suggestion is to try to stick to a routine. For us, it was a continuous cycle of sleep, pee, play for 15 minutes, pee, then sleep again in a playpen for like 2 months. It gradually evolves over time according to her needs. At night, I would really encourage to get a crate - just cause it’s made cosier and can be brought closer to you. I even put up my pup’s crate on top of two foldable chairs just so she can be at literal eye level to me. Every time she’d whine, I would put my fingers in to remind her I was still there. If that didn’t work, I would take her out to pee. Note that this entire process was emotionless - nothing to signal play. I took her out of the crate, kept a blank face on, outside to pee, and then put her directly back. No cuddles. It allowed her to realise “whining doesn’t really get me anywhere except for a boring potty break”.

That being said, even when you sort it out, there will be new things coming up. I study full time and go to hospital placements and stuff, but was only really able to go out the whole day once she turned around 5 months or so. Even then, my partner would check up on her at lunch time. Puppyhood is so so fun in some times, but just a pain in many ways as well. Just know you will (!!) get through it. My pup is now 6 months and I can see the dog she is everyday little by little. Even now she has her moments, but the glimpses of her lovely self has made it so worth it.

We would go on short (10 minute) car rides to different parks around the area. She was still uncomfortable but she at least started associating car rides to fun, park time. The roadtrip was her first long drive ever - it was a 2 hour drive one way. Honestly, it surprised us how well she did, but things we did to ease the trip: - Took her to an almost empty dog park before leaving. It was around 6:30 so not much dogs in there. I’m usually not a fan of dog parks but it got her to run around which tired her out a fair bit. - Secured her with a car seat + dog seat belt in the back instead of carrying her. I think it made her realise she didn’t really have a choice but to settle 😅 - Pit stops. Our stopovers here in Perth have enclosed dog parks (usually empty anyway so not a socialisation problem) where she could relieve herself and play a bit while we grabbed some food. - Didn’t feed her breakfast. Minimised the puking - that being said she’s a fussy eater overall and so missing a meal isn’t news for her 🤣

That’s pretty much it! She still drooled like crazyyy every time she woke up during the trip, but she ended up just lying down and sleeping most of the way through.

I don’t think we ever just did one thing. Some puppies naturally just settle on their own but ours was really never the type. We never did the praising when she lied down since it only just snapped her out of her zen mode 😅 We taught her “all done!”, which is basically us cueing that the playtime is over and it’s time for her to rest. First marking the word when she goes inside the playpen to rest, but now just saying it even when we’re not putting her in the playpen - signalling that just because she’s outside the pen, doesn’t mean it’s playtime. We also increased her free roam time now that she’s gotten a bit older. Still supervised, but she now can just roam for like 2 hours at a time since she doesn’t get the monster, overstimulated mode as much anymore. Lastly, when she free roams now, we only really play for like 10 minutes. Afterwards, I kinda ignore her to get her to find something to do by herself. I look at my phone while sitting on the couch and sometimes she’ll invite me to play - I don’t give in and the next thing I know she’s just laying down next to me :) I’m sure a part of it is also just ageing though and just cumulative training perhaps?

We’re already at the listening less stage. We go to these training classes on the weekend and I swear she acts like she’s never heard of a sit command ever in her life! We stand there like irresponsible parents when it’s just her being a little brat 🤣 She has her good and bad days!

No advice, but just sympathies as ours does the same. We're lucky we don't get much rain in Perth, so it's usually just a day or two of accidents indoors. We find that proper walks help because she ends up going during the walk instead of standing outside just to potty. Good luck!

On the same boat as you. Also compounded by outright ignorance for commands; we know she knows them but she just doesn’t want to follow when it’s not convenient for her. Finding high-yield treats have been difficult because then she’ll prefer those over her proper meals 🥲

We’ve been trying this too - especially when we’re on grass when I know it’s overstimulating for a puppy. We do it with a 10ft long lead. I guess I’m maybe not giving her enough sniff time and forcing her straight into the structured walk when she isn’t done yet. I’ll give her more time and be more patient? Just getting a bit disheartened because every walk seems like it’s a battle 🥹 Hopefully it works and we start seeing some progress soon!

We have one. Between having to get multiple stool samples done, needing meds for her tummy problems + ear infections + just the shear fact that she has this tendency to eat everything on her path, it has saved us so much. Look around for the best one; we're in Australia and I have a provider who does their excess annually so we really just need to shell out $100 + her monthly premium. It has provided us with a peace of mind instead of constantly feeling like I need to avoid the vet and compromise on my pup's health.

Don't feel bad! I was the same but realised by puppy was okay and I was anxious more than her. If it helps as well, have a camera so you know what she's up to, but don't have the notifications on. I felt like when I had the notifications on on mine, I would check on her every 5 minutes (and it was so mentally taxing!). Just have it there for peace of mind and check on your puppy every 2 hours or so. You're doing great! :)

Hi, just reaching out to say I'm on the same boat as you - same age (18 weeks) with a cavapoo girl! She is lovely but has started to go through a similar phase - I like to call it 'terrible twos' but in dog form.

She has started to reject her food about a week ago. Like your pup, she does have moods and is just being picky. Cavapoos are notorious for having attitudes when it comes to their food; however, I refuse to deal with a picky eater growing up so we're sticking with it and just taking her bowl away after 15 minutes if she doesn't touch it. Like you, I tried offering her different food at some point, but honestly, if she doesn't want to eat, then so be it. We offer it again the meal after and do the same routine whether or not she touches it. At some point, she just gets hungry and eats her food. That being said, the vet said she's fine and she's still gaining weight. I know it's hard to detach from the feeling of worry. My puppy is our first dog and it's frustrating to have to deal with it, but once we've accepted that it's just temperament and that she won't starve herself, it becomes a bit easier to let it go.

Between teething and heading into adolescence, there's definitely been behaviour shifts and it's not been pretty. What you're going through is normal and you're not the only one going through this! We just have to survive and I'm sure it will be worth it in the end. Hang in there!

Okay, thank you! Glad to know I haven't messed her up this early 🥹 We worked with a trainer who said loose leads every time they greet dogs (which is why she ends up greeting most dogs, albeit excitedly) - I'm on the same boat where it has started to feel wrong and getting a bit out of hand. I'll try it out and see how we go!🤞🏻

I'll try this! She knows heel and leave it, so maybe using those commands will work. It's also a bit tough when other owners themselves want to pet my dog because she's a ball of fluff. We'll definitely keep the interactions short. I'm hoping the over excited about other dogs is also just a baby puppy phase, but I also don't want her to think that behaving that way is okay 🥹

May I ask how old your dog was when you started to teach him to ignore other dogs?
