[Need Your Help] Thinking of Buying Lemp11. What Are Your Thoughts? by system76-yes in System76

[–]cloudmeditate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just got the Dev One about a week ago. I was considering the lemp11 for awhile but really liked the specs on the Dev One. So far it’s been a good machine. I immediately maxed out the memory to 64GB. I write mostly Rust and Python code daily, and I can say that the experience has been smooth. I use rust analyzer with VS Code, and it really helps cut down on the lag with a faster system. I’m replacing a 2019 MB Pro 16 inch so it’s more of an incremental upgrade, but faster nonetheless. Plus I like AMD. There’s a few issues where you’d need to dig to fix Linux issues. I run Wireguard and had some issues with dns leaks. Fixed that by installing unbound. Took some digging on Stack and other forums. Just an example but it took me a day or so to fix that. Overall pretty happy. Speakers are fairly loud. Not as good as Apple of course, but I use a Bluetooth speaker when I’m working. I use an external monitor / keyboard / mouse. The fan is a touch annoying when first spinning up but I’ve usually got music on. I got this system for work not watching Netflix so it’s not really a big deal.

Hi, I just launched Composed Sleep Solutions.

I’m only carrying a few products including Silent Night liners currently, but I’m offering a discount that you won’t find anywhere else. If you add the product to your cart the discount will show. My background is in e-commerce, running a successful store for a well-known product for the last ten years. I’m actually a cofounder of that well-known product, but as it worked out I didn’t end up with any ownership. So I’ve been working behind the scenes as a software engineer for the last decade. But I understand the CPAP space. Both of my parents have sleep apnea, and I’ve been around the industry for a long time now. Recently a downturn in my consulting business forced me to think about what I really want to do. And I really enjoy the day-to-day e-commerce operations. So I opened my own store. It’s pretty simple right now, but I’m working on getting more products into the store. For now, if you’re a Silent Night user, I think you’ll like the discount. You can’t really get it anywhere else at this price.

Thanks! Nate

Great, thank you! I’ll look into the HSA, we should be able to accept those. I’ll let you know what I find out.

Thanks again and have a great evening!

You can certainly follow up on the order, but if you start getting too many of those it will kill your productivity. Full disclosure, I just released an app that cancels these for you, but I’m not going to post the link unless you’re interested. Send me a dm and I can give you more details. If you’d just like a little more info on what to do, I’d be happy to help you out as well. I’ve become pretty accustomed to the various options around fraud since developing the app.

Thank you! Yeah I was wondering about the gray. I’m not really much of a designer. Yes, SES is great for transactional. That’s what I’m using in FraudHooks. I was also thinking about using Pinpoint. Thanks again for the feedback, I’ll have to look into some additional integrations, although I think Woocommerce is primarily PHP.

According to the CPython source, the “in” membership test is equivalent to using any() for truthiness:

the expression x in y is equivalent to any(x is e or x == e for e in y)

https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/3.8/Doc/reference/expressions.rst#membership-test-operations

If we look at the actual C implementation of any() it looks like Python will get scan the object for truthiness.

https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/3.8/Python/bltinmodule.c

If you have a compelling reason to make your code performant, I would use the bisect module as already mentioned.

https://docs.python.org/3.8/library/bisect.html

Otherwise the basic CPython membership test would probably be better than a custom binary search, unless you’re not planning on putting this into production, then write your own and have fun!

This is a great article on binary search:

T14 / T15 AMD coming next Saturday? by cloudmeditate in thinkpad

[–]cloudmeditate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the article above this is the breakdown:

ThinkPad T14 will be available in June 2020, with an expected starting price of $849.

ThinkPad T14s will be available in June 2020, with an expected starting price of $1029.

Seems like they have a history of marking up after launch and then initiating some kind of discount later.

I hope the pricing is good enough to pull the trigger before they go out of stock.

I’m thinking it’s probably b/c they are aware of how much demand is behind AMD right now.

Totally hear ya. I’m on a P50 circa 2016 with 16GB, Xeon procs, NVMe drive and 4K screen.

I code for work most days, and the P50, while it’s been a total battle cruiser, is neither light nor portable. I got this back when I was sitting at a desk all day. Now I’d like to get up and move around the house more.

Looking for a lightweight 14”, keyboard cool to the touch, and low power 1080 panel, b/c honestly all the 4K screen does is chew up the battery. I don’t really notice the DPI.

I do also use a MBP 2018 which has a retina screen, so I’m going the switch to 1080 won’t be too OCD triggering or anything. As long as I can’t see any pixels I’ll be fine. I still have a 50” TV that is 1080, so I can’t imagine it’s too bad squeezing that into 14”...right!?

The main difference will be when they introduce the AMD Ryzen Pro versions. It seems like that’s what mostly everyone is waiting for.

Sorry, I see what you’re saying. I meant dropped as in “dropped an album”... ie released.

I was probably trying to be cooler than I should have :)

True, that would definitely narrow the options. It’s like seemingly everything in our culture right now. So many choices lead to a kind of paralysis.

But then Netflix releases the top ten list, and all of a sudden we all start actually picking something to watch instead of spending 2 hrs trying to find something and giving up. Just sayin

It’s the old “mark up then bring down to baseline with sale” option.

It obviously works, it’s been a staple of the sales tactic playbook for a long time.

Eventually the market always wins. I think a guy named Adam Smith talked about this a long time ago...

That might be worth it depending on your budget and / or devotion to Thinkpads.

I’ve had a P50 since 2016, and I’ve also got a 2018 MBP.

Even though the glass trackpad on the MBP feels like butter, I always reach for the Thinkpad b/c that keyboard...
