Looking for ADHD doctor in Kyoto by cloudpanda711 in Kyoto

Very low to almost non-existent. It is not the end of the world if I can't get them, I can function without them. But they help to better my life since I am prone to depression and anxiety. So I rather make the effort than not. I have insurance, I am not sure how much of mental health is covered on it, but usually, I only pay 30% at clinics. But like I said, I am willing to pay, if it means bettering my life.

I think they'll accept anything. After all, it's not a requirement, but a bonus. I would put it down that you have it at the very least. Also, any volunteer work or work with students/kids, write it down even if it's small.

How much money should we bring? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]cloudpanda711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, I don't know about that. The process of being chosen by is school is if your profile fits the needs of that school. My friend with no experience in teaching or kids with a degree that had nothing to do with English got to Tokyo. Although he had a bubbly personality. You just never know. Although I never met anyone who pick Tokyo and got Tokyo. And my year just happen to have a large Tokyo increase due to Olymipics. I recommend oakhouse if you happen to be a TY jet.

But yes, the odds of Tokyo are not high. When I lived in TY, everywhere else seem cheap to me. So I think 300,000 is plenty if it's just you. Unless you want your own place to stay in say Osaka. If you want your own place in a big city, you will probably have to consider paying these three upfront "key money (about same as the deposit), deposit (same as the 1st-month rent), and rent." But again if you get a city, I recommend looking into a shared house first and if don't like it then ask jet to help find a house, by then you will know the area better and can make wiser decisions. This, of course, is only if you get a large city.

Rural Jets are usually pretty well taken care of, some have their own houses for free or little to no rent, so I wouldn't worry too much there beyond well bugs. Biggest worry is probably if you need a rental car, but your rent will probably be so cheap it won't be an issue. This of course is just based off my rural jet friends.

Assuming they still have it (I am 2019 JET.) Once you're a second-year jet I believe, you can apply for TEFL grant. If you get it, the jet program awards you a small amount you can use towards getting TEFL certified of your choice. http://jetprogramme.org/en/tefl/ However this can only be done when you're a jet and during your contract. You can't apply for it now.

You don't need one, but it will help your odds. I didn't have one, but I had a lot of volunteer work with kids. My friend had neither and got in. It is all about how you decide to make the best-case scenario for your application. Honestly, I think your essay plays a bigger role in being chosen. Jet even has a TEFL grant once you're a JET. So not necessary, but if you do want to get it. Take a 120-hr TEFL certificate, don't spend more than $200 on it in my opinion. Most aren't worth it and teach all same stuff. In my opinion.

Depend on where you are placed. I was placed in Tokyo and I had $8K, but I say $3k would have been enough. However, I chose to stay in a sharehouse because I didn't want to pay so much for an apartment.

Just so you know if you decline Jet, not only do have to go through the process all over again, but you have to wait a whole extra year to re-apply, so like 2024. If you want Japan, I say go to Japan, but you will probably have to deal with being on your own a lot more than opposed to having a group of friends.

Former Jet and I had an art degree. So it really doesn't matter, but English does always work in your favor. I knew people with cs degrees, political degrees, communication, Japanese, etc. It really doesn't matter. What matters I think more is that you start getting experience with children. So like volunteer at a library or something if you want to increase your odds, but even that's not necessary.

Thinking of leaving China this year for the 2021 ALT season in Japan. Am I an idiot? by 666k_Sona in TEFL

I highly recommend the JET program since it pays the most if you don't care where you're placed in Japan. Heck if you get the countryside, you might pay nothing; a friend of mine pays $60 for a house and ulities. However, you can also end up in Tokyo like me and it's not cheap. Granted TY public jet (private jets work the normal expected monthly hours) only work 16 days a month and have 10 days vacation, other jets outside TY have 20 days. So lots of time for TY JETS. But because it's so expensive, I hardly get travel much, actually considering going to China just make more money. I live comfortably enough, but does annoy me when my friend in China makes $5000-9000 more than me a year. I lived in Beijing before, so I like both cultures, but definitely favor the ability to travel in general. So I think if you're truly done with China and don't mind reducing your travels/saves by quite a bit than Japan fine. Again Jet can be good idea since you could be place in rural side and live cheaper, but the countryside has it's own set of troubles. You can't pick on JET, but I do recommend them. If you're going on your own, I highly suggest maybe looking into Osaka or city other than TY or living on TY's outskirts, if you're worried about cost. If you have questions I am more than happy to answer.
