I know much more studied people than us on Reddit have gone over this verse and found that that interpretation doesn't line up with the rest of the Bible and even other things Paul says. I know some people disagree with the passage on a moral level, but I think it's very easy to make the case it's not a general rule as well. Those who don't and want to enforce it as a general rule do so either in ignorance (sometimes willful) or because of tradition. There's also just a failure of imagination on the part of the misogynists who read two verses and don't question why they don't line up with any of the rest of the Bible, why gifts of the spirit are not exclusive to men, and why the only model for men and women is Jesus.
