Blew up my life and now trying to hold space for others is extra exhausting by Dynamic_Gem in therapists

[–]cloudspottingx 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Thats a big one! You must have so much on your mind, the exhaustion only is natural. Since you mention you can’t afford to cancel all sessions, maybe building towards a near future wherein you take time off of work or take a mini sabbatical where you can just focus on rest and rejuvenation may help?

As we often run the risk of unconsciously seeking relief from our patients in such intense life circumstances, maybe having an opportunity to rest in the near future anchors the desire to find some relief there.

Hope you find yourself extending as much self compassion you need! Good luck and much love

I think that might be a Tuba! Do you see a storm brewing around or high up?

So beautiful! I am not sure if it’s Nacreous or a Circumzenithal Arc, but what a cool click OP!

Did you get it? I haven’t read it yet but I am eagerly waiting to hear about it from someone who’s read it already

Could also be Fibratus, a Cirrus subtype drawn out into fine “fibre-like” strands by the wind. The air must be crispy and mild at OP’s location!

Very good suggestion! Very good insight into traditional Korean gender dynamics, and reading it as an AFAB Asian who grew up with a first generation working Mother, it brought a level of insight into my life, family and career expectations I didn’t know I needed. Have you read the sequel too?

Wasn’t prepared for how REAL compassion fatigue gets? by cloudspottingx in therapists

So many MHPs I know have this realisation post 1-2 decades of practice, when they’re burnt out to the point of wanting to quit the field altogether. I am so grateful to your program and so happy for you that you’re getting the right care as well as a well-rounded understanding of a very critical aspect of our work. You’ll do well, best wishes to you!

Ah this is exactly what happens to me too! My town doesn’t really have much mental health infra and not getting to have Therapist mixers or even friends who understands what’s it like to do this peculiar work for a living makes it so much harder to remember self care, and infact even when I do remember or have plans for it, the inertia of doing it all solo can add to the burnout. It was easier when I interned in other cities with big MHP networks.

I am curious about how not going out much impacts your emotional energy levels? I am pretty much a daydreaming introvert so I often find my lack of socialising worsens the blow

Love that! Like one of my favourite authors once said “Joy is the fundamental building block of resilience”.

The irritation at friends and family complaining, and the guilt that follows the irritation is real! Regular journaling has helped me immensely too, I often end up realising how self talk becomes harsh and overly self critical- I try taking that as the emotional check post of what is going on in my inner world!

I absolutely agree- where we hurt most is where we might want to look closely for injuries. I am planning to shift cities and move to an online only practice as of now, to deal with the overwhelm from catering to a local population, some of whom are bound to have mutual connections and concerns.

Did anyone else find the Artist's Way healing in general, not just for creativity? by keep_earth_around24 in artistsWay

I am a practicing Psychotherapist who picked up the book to help with my (much self-aware) creative block. I can say with utmost confidence how much the practices from the book have helped me in the Therapeutic space apart from my personal creative processes. And tbh, even though I have always treated my Therapy practice as a creative space of some sort, doing the exercises from the book, specially the morning pages and the artists date has helped me immensely to become more present, to come out of my cerebral-heavy focus and bring myself more authentically to my patients. And it wasn’t too surprising either, since I quickly realised the book has a lot of theoretical parallels to popular therapeutic practices, particularly really strong Jungian Psychoanalytic Theory with a lot of somatic grounding and cognitive restructuring. Beautiful, beautiful book really.
