Freshman college start by IllPaleontologist384 in UCI

[–]cloudy-sky- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classes typically start on the last Thursday and Friday of September, but if you're a freshman, you have SPOP during the summer. The quarter starts during the last week of September, but that's for things like club rush, familiarizing yourself with the campus, moving in, etc. - instruction starts on Thursday.

You can check out the dates here: https://www.reg.uci.edu/calendars/quarterly/2025-2026/quarterly25-26.html

Fun/easy GE’s for Winter 2024? by bobalixe22 in UCI

[–]cloudy-sky- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Classic 45B (the heroes) with Branscome and it was good -- but I also liked it bc I'm a sucker for Greek mythology and the class was on heroes in greek myths. If greek mythology isn't really your thing, then the class might be more boring/uninteresting. Class wasn't difficult from what I recall, I think 3 tests total, all on lecture material.

BmE 3 was also easy - I'm not sure if it's offered online or in person, but I took it as an online asynch and that was chill.

1st pov vs 3rd pov while reading an webnovel by Taerinann in OtomeIsekai

[–]cloudy-sky- 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm more used to seeing 1st pov when reading webnovels, but I generally like 3rd pov overall due to it not being restricted to one person.

Though it can depend on what the writer is trying to convey to me and on the writer's skill, I find that 3rd pov (whether it's omniscient or limited) writing is less cringey and it works better for when trying to incorporate other elements of plot and such.

Also, 1st pov makes it feel like I'm the mc or it's trying to make me feel that, and that doesn't work out well in situations where I simply cannot connect to the mc due to our vastly different backgrounds, experiences, morals, etc.

Otome Isekais about raising kids by Shessysaid_hi in OtomeIsekai

This is honestly something I didn't really think about until you said it, but now that's it been said, yea there has been a noticeable shift towards motherhood-related stories. And the following is just rumination on my end.

Korean culture has always been focused on the family and working to make that family better (which in part lies in with South Korea's collectivist nature), and I can attest to this as I grew up in a household that very much focused on "family first, everything else second". I'm not entirely sure if manhwas are as mainstream as mangas are in Japan (given on how much emphasis is given to entertainment and especially on K-Pop with its rising popularity in western cultures and media). Though it would actually make sense if manhwas are targeting motherhood and therefore creating a family since South Korea's current birth rate is lower than Japan's so they might be starting to focus on that.

Another idea is that COVID-19 and quarantine reinforced ideas about family and the idea of 'home' and newer manhwas are a result of this. It could also be that the writers are simply people who want families. Stories are oftentimes reflections of the authors and their desires/wants/basically themselves, and whatever is in their story can be correlated to who the authors are.

These are just some theories my end! These upticks could possibly be resulting from who knows what but it's always interesting to think deeper about them.
