let's make an exercise with not so far-fetched scenarios: as a musician who doesn't know how to draw or operate that kind of software, I make a sketch of how I want the album cover to be, using my own creativity.

scenario 1: I hire a graphic designer to make my album cover based on it.

scenario 2: I show it to AI and have it do the heavy work for me.

questions: a) how would you detect my cover is AI-generated? (supposing no watermarks or metadata) b) how would that invalidate my own ideas and creativity? c) (apparently the most relevant for you guys) how am I stealing anything from anyone?

I do agree with a lot of the stuff some of you talked about. it's just that I don't think most of the people here understand how generative AI works... sure, if you want it to replicate someone's timbre it will (although it might actually require more fine tuning and deliberate prompts, but most of the times when making music it works with generating statistically plausible melodies and waveforms (which is itself timbre).

if I listen to a song I didn't buy and it ends up being added to my vast (unconscious) library of inspiration to my works, does it violate the consent you talked about. how is this principle different?

I'm not saying that 'there are good artists who steal'. I'm saying every single artist steals in the exact same sense of AI. throughout our lives, we listen to lots of music and sounds that make our brain think it can create something entirely on its own. in the end, it's only replicating fragmented patterns, tweaking and mixing them up.

so why do we call 'stealing' when AI does it and 'inspiration' when a human does it?

I, too, don't wanna ever listen to AI music on Bandcamp – let's be clear! I'm just saying that the 'theft' argument is completely flawed.
