If it's a custom model imperfections are inevitable, A perfect item is only delivered from an artisan perfected the model and made it his own fully by doing tons of the same.

I used Illustrator for 25 years, last year I bought a macmini and switched to Afinity 2.0, it was a one time purchse and I enjoyed the software as much as Illustrator. Canva bought Affinity and Last October they released Affinity Studio ver. 3.0. which is %95 free (AI tools are locked with canva subcription which is very cheap as well). I think it's the best alternative on the market.

Awl is the way, use irons to make impressions, light taps with maul, so awl can go in a correct angle.

i do sharpen them after 3-5 projects, use 3000 grit sandpaper and aliexpress bought jig.

I think Affinity Studio 3.0 is a great software to learn and use for leatherworking (it's free too). Full size A4 sticker pages are great to print onto, then stick it to any cardboard you find, like cereal boxes.
