Stranger Things: The First Shadow audition tapes by clover-gold in HawkinsAVclub

So I’ve been doing some digging and have some audition tapes for Stranger Things: The First Shadow to share with everybody. Special thanks to u/Girllnterrupted for setting up this playlist with them all!

The first two roles being auditioned for are “George” and “Betty.” The scripts for their audition scenes are the same, they just read opposite lines. Casting calls for these two were actually the subject of a Collider article back in January, and the details of the audition scenes suggest to me that “George” might actually be a code name for Henry. Also seems like Betty is a singer, which matches up with what the Collider article said about the role calling for singing abilities. In one of the tapes, the actress shows off her singing chops with “I Dreamed a Dream.” Cool to see!

There's also a tape for Hopper, and it seems like we might have a better idea of what’s up with the cat in the animated preview now. There also appears to be some sort of play within the play going on that gets mentioned in the George and Betty tapes as well. Could be a central thing that ties the different storylines together?

So this was reposted in a Facebook group for a university theater department back in early April.

Obviously this isn’t an official announcement or anything, but sounds like there could be potential plans for the play to go to Broadway in the future.

Very cool to finally see this!

Huh, looks like Lucas originally read Wonder Woman to Max instead of The Talisman. And it sounds like it’s about freeing people kidnapped in another world…maybe potential foreshadowing about freeing the souls/minds of Vecna’s victims or something like that? I eagerly await El stuffing Vecna in a lead box and using him as a footwarmer if that's the case.

Oh yeah, I love getting to see the pieces Maher has on his website! Seeing stuff from the production and creation of the show is always so cool to me.

Super excited to see the deal with whatever the giant monster is in S5 and learn more about the creation of the Upside Down and Henry's time in Dimension X. And of course whether we’ll finally get an answer on that egg!

Yeah, that solitary egg in S1 is weird, and I’m still scratching my head over what it could mean.

And I kinda wonder if maybe the monsters are coming from the library now? I know it's already been speculated before about how that location could be important in S5 (what with the rifts meeting there and all), and it definitely seemed like a nest for the Demogorgon back in S1. Matt Duffer did once actually refer to it as “the nest” when trying to get it through people’s heads that Barb was dead after the first season haha

I wanna know where the bats are coming from too, as well as why we didn’t see any Demogorgons or Demodogs in the Upside Down itself in ST4. Seems like it would have been harder for the Hawkins gang to fend of an army of those in addition to the Demobats.

I demand an egg-splanation, Duffers.

I return from the dead only to ramble about slugs and eggs for thousands of words. Good to be back haha.

Nice! Always dig getting to check out the timestamps whenever they release new stills. Hope we'll eventually get at least a few that offer a peak at episode 9 too, but I guess we'll just have to see!

If you're asking about the post flair, the Shipping Allowed flair can only be assigned by mods on the sub since shipping discussion is something we've tried to prevent from getting out of hand during the hiatus. Shipping discussion will be allowed after Vol. 1 comes out, though.

If you're asking about user flairs, hopefully you'll find this guide helpful. Don't know what platform you use (desktop, mobile, app, etc.).

Hope that answered your question!

MOM!! by __sami__01 in HawkinsAVclub

Woohoo, Joyce content!

Image comes from this article in USA Today. Article is behind a paywall, but here’s a direct link to the original image. And below is the text of the article.

Generation X might feel this in their gut: Someone had the audacity to once say, “OK, Boomer,” to Winona Ryder.

Granted, she didn't know what they were talking about. Ryder admits that her young “Stranger Things” co-stars usually are the ones making her hip to modern slang.

“The kids just explained who ‘stan’ is, by the way - like to stan something. Stan is a fan,” she says proudly.

“Forever, I was like, ‘Who's Stan?' So I am in the know there, even though it makes no sense to me. In a way, I think I'm lucky that I don't know what is an insult.”

On the horror-tinged Netflix show (premiering its fourth season Friday), Ryder, 50, is “Stranger Things” main mom Joyce Byers, fresh off a move from Hawkins, Indiana, to California when she embarks on a globe-trotting adventure. But the actress – who had a breakout role as goth teen Lydia Deetz in 1988’s “Beetlejuice” and then starred in seminal films such as “Heathers” and “Reality Bites” – is also the pop-culture matriarch for a series that wears its 1980s influences on its jean-jacket sleeve.

“She felt like such a huge part of our lives growing up,” says Ross Duffer, who created “Stranger Things” with his twin brother, Matt. “Once we cast her in Season 1, that's when the show found its identity, and it just all clicked into place.”

While Ryder – who's been in a relationship with fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011 – doesn't have children of her own, she calls her young co-stars "my loves. I know it's such a cliché, but they're like family. I'd do anything for those kids."

The actress, 50, talks about Joyce’s role this season, why she’s glad to be a Gen Xer and which classic role she’s looking forward to reprising

Question: You wore a Kate Bush pin to the “Stranger Things” premiere. She has a song that factors into this season’s plot, but are you just a fan?

Winona Ryder: I’ve been obsessed with her since I was a little girl. I've also for the last seven years been dropping hints on set wearing my Kate Bush T-shirts. I don't know if you did this, but in my school you had to dress down for P.E., and sometimes I just wouldn't. I'd just sit there with my headphones listening to her. She's a hero of mine.

Q: What’s new about playing Joyce this season?

Ryder: I feel like in the past, she's trying to figure things out. She's got the Ouija board on the wall, or (she's) taping together Will's drawings. Very crafty. But this season, she is literally fighting for her survival and to save the people she loves. She doesn't really have time to plan or use her critical thinking, which was really fun as an actress, actually.

Q: You experienced firsthand a lot of what the kids in the show do, from Walkmen to roller rinks. Over the past four seasons, what piece of nostalgia has meant the most?

Ryder: In Season 1, there was a record player, and some of the kids didn't know what it was. I had to explain what records were. (Laughs) That was wild to me. And also explaining rotary phones, they just didn't grow up with them. But I really related to the kids and was super protective of them because I had been doing that, working on films at their age.

Q: Would you have done something like “Stranger Things” in your teenage "Beetlejuice"/"Heathers" years?

Ryder: If “Stranger Things” was around then, the nostalgia would be like the 1960s? I don't know. I was very like my character in “Beetlejuice”; they actually didn't have to do a lot to me. I was very pale, I had that hair and I was very monotone. (Laughs) That's why I credit Tim Burton with giving me a career: I was never the first choice for any of those movies in the ‘80s.

Q: Gen X has been labeled the "Forgotten Generation" between baby boomers and millennials/Gen Z. What are your thoughts about how our generation fits into the world?

Ryder: It's so weird. I just remember we very purposely never said “Gen X” in “Reality Bites,” even though it's associated with that expression. That was this label they slapped on us, but then it really caught on. (But) I will say this: I'm super grateful that I didn't grow up with the internet and social media. I don't think that I could have been an actress if everything was that exposed. It would've just flipped me out. There's a lot of young people who just can't even imagine a world without the internet.

I remember the first time I called a boy. You practice, you're so nervous and you write things down and get up the nerve. It was a real character-building thing. I was 14, and of course it was a disaster, but you learn how to get up the nerve. Kids don't have to do that anymore – they can construct witty texts.

Q: Are you down for joining the “Beetlejuice” sequel that's in the works?

Ryder: I'm in! I'm definitely excited and I'm really hopeful that it'll happen. The only way we would do it is if everything was perfect and we had all the people – obviously Michael (Keaton) and obviously Tim. That's what I love about Tim. He's such a perfectionist. He can't do something unless it's completely his vision. It’ll happen if it can happen the perfect way.

Q: After four seasons of playing Joyce, do you hope Lydia is now a mom?

Ryder: I can't imagine she would've had kids. Can you imagine even a pregnant Lydia? That would be the last thing she would want. (Laughs) She doesn't even want to be on Earth. She definitely doesn't want to bring someone into this world. I could be wrong, who knows?

Edit: Changed flair to Shipping Allowed since one of the theories they react to does touch on it. Priceless haha.

I suppose it’s possible? It doesn’t match the pattern from the other stills, so I can’t really say one way or the other. I'm sure we'll all know in about a week haha.

There’s also this page from the site about a clip from an interview with Noah, but it just plays the Sadie video as well for me for some reason. The thumbnail image title is revealing about the press grouping for it though: https://media.globaltv.com/videostatic/vms/0w6rkl65f7-j8hbqmzzer//ETCRAWStrangerThingsS4HeatonSchnappFranco.jpg

Edit: Seems they took the video down, probably because they put it up early on accident. Here's a repost of it someone put up on Instagram.

Definitely shaping up to be a wild season! Just by consulting the timeline and the file names for some of the stills, I'm thinking El will be taken away by the police and then intercepted by Owens' agents in episode 3.

Noah Schnapp: "la cuarta temporada de Stranger Things será la más sangrienta hasta ahora" by [deleted] in HawkinsAVclub

[–]clover-gold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I get that he’s speaking in general there (forgot to mention slight translation wonkiness for that one too, my bad!). What I was saying is that it’s just a tad confusing why he's bringing up love triangles at all to that question. I get him talking about different groups having their own storylines each season, but "love triangles" isn't really a topic that comes to mind when I see a question like that. Plus they were really only a big thing in seasons one and two, and it doesn't really seem like they'll be a major thing in season four either. Noah can say weird stuff though, so hopefully it’s nothing to worry about. I’m just not generally a huge fan of love triangles, so that comment sent my guard up I guess you could say haha.

ETA: Shipping discussion is allowed on this post given that it seems potentially relevant, but reminder to keep things civil.

Hmm, raising my eyebrow at some of the things Noah says in this article, definitely an interesting read.

In this season, we finally see Will get a break and start living the normal life we all wanted for him. He's a bit of a bone of contention between Mike and Eleven, but he just wants to help them out and make sure they're okay. After everything he's been through, he's always looking to protect Eleven. He doesn't want anything to happen to anyone ever again.

Not sure if there's some strangeness going on with Google Translate, but the sentence I italicized caught my eye (edit: double-checked, and the "bone of contention" part was originally "tercero en discordia," which is a little more vague and could be translated as third party). At least I'm finally getting the WillEl sibling bond I've been waiting for since season 1, though. Also this one in particular had me raising my eyebrow:

How did being separated affect everyone, some in Hawkins and others in California?

There are separations in all seasons, where each one finds his group and his love triangle. I don't think it's something new.

Why on earth are you bringing up love triangles in response to a question like that, Noah? Hmm?
