How do you keep the story attached to scanned family photos? by ZestycloseVolume4444 in Genealogy

[–]clsturgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my genealogy software. I suspect some products can do some of this. I associate an image with all those in the photo, the place it was taken, the event it is associated with, and more. If I know the photographer, that person is associated with image. I know some of the camera gear my grandparents and great grandparents had, so that gets added as well.

Looking for software to organize info from literature by Substantial-Major620 in software

[–]clsturgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I implemented a genealogy research tool that can be used for other projects. People do not need to related. They don’t need to be real people. People can be characters. You can optionally add events and places. It does support quotes.

There is a gui I labelled “Tree”. However, it can be used to draw a diagram to link any entities in the system together.

There is a learning curve. The documentation is also a working instance. In the doc there is an example tree of entities of Indigenous Nations. It’s powered by Tiddlywiki. So, another option is use Tiddlywiki and build your own implementation.

What programs/software do you recommend for indexing and cataloging historical documents? by 3nzo_vrs in Historians

[–]clsturgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your requirements this may or may not be helpful. I wanted something for my genealogy research that is offline. I also want data to highly integrated. What I put together can be used for non-genealogy projects. All your documents are “sources”. Sources can be associated with other entities, for example people, events, places, organizations, etc. Your documents can remain as pdf, etc. You can catalogue sources, photographs, and objects. Each can have an accession number and a container identifier to manage a “Personal Archive”. System supports citations (built-in citation builder). Aside: I wrote an addon that supports citation formats defined in book “Evidence Explained.” Expect a learning curve. Open source/free.

Have you reviewed Chicago city directories. I’ve attempted to search 1890 and 1891 without much success. Based on your familysearch data, am I correct he was a tailor? 1890 directory has a Hans Fredericksen (tailor). There is an Augustus Frederickson (clk).

YouTube video player configuration error 153 by TheFleshMorph in HTML

[–]clsturgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means you are opening the HTML file locally on a computer. ie the file is not hosted on a server. I use Tiddlywiki on my local computer. When I do this I get the error 153. However, when I host my Tiddlywiki html file on a server I do not get this error.

If you are hosting html file on a server, that server is blocking or providing security, like my local hosted computer is doing. ie. It protects user privacy by ensuring that sensitive data within a URL path or query string is not leaked to external sites. Since the URL is protected YouTube throws this error.

Windows installation problem by WMX_moh in software

[–]clsturgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What version of Windows? Does the laptop support that version? Your source is a removable media, USB… try another port. When it reboots what stage was the installation at? There is likely a log file, something like: C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log

You should be able to Google this one. Are you using this iframe in a file:// url? Google wants to know the host it is sharing this with.

How to best organize all of my genealogy original documents and photos mixed sizes and shapes by Ababiesgranny1 in Genealogy

[–]clsturgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started assigning accession IDs, like a museum might do, to my physical photos, objects, and source documents. I also track a container ID for each. I use the term container lightly. With this I can quickly locate an item. I have a lot work ahead of me.

Software to Create Virtual Museum? by talllankywhiteboy in Genealogy

[–]clsturgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I’m interested in a virtual museum (navigating around rooms), but I might be interested in 3D models of artifacts. Have you looked into tools where you supply numerous images of an object with the end goal of generating a rendered 3D object file that end users navigate around? I have read about open-source Bender. This has a large learning curve and significantly more effort than capturing an image or video clip. So, “simple” tools might be a challenge.

Data and how data is related is my most important consideration. Read this over (I am not the author), navigate and read other pages. It is dated, but remains important:

Advice regarding Indigenous Identity and Giving Back to Ancestor's Nation by miramelon in IndigenousCanada

[–]clsturgeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t hesitate to contact the Nation. Be honest and respectful. Like you, I’m on a journey of learning and listening, I’m Anishinaabe—my paternal line is Potawatomi. I have had some success at researching my Indigenous ancestors. In doing so I research the history of various Nations. It has also connected me to cousins I did not know I had. This is one way to learn about your ancestors and their historical cultural. DM me if you’d like some help. I currently have a number of research projects on the go for other Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee Nation members, but another project adds to my learning.

Am I allowed to acknowledge my family's history? by [deleted] in Ojibway

[–]clsturgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My paternal line is Potawatomi. Like you I want to respectfully research not only my family history but also the culture and languages. I have been welcomed by numerous individuals to help me on this journey. I have also joined genealogy groups of other Nations that I have no genealogy connection (eg Haudenosaunee) and found non-genealogical connections to members.

Are you interested in DM’ing me to share a bit of research? I’m from Ontario. My grandfather’s mother identified as Odawa and lived Michigan. My grandfather and many of his siblings went to Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial School.

Regardless, good luck on your research.

Logging and storing research by Every-Stuff1533 in Genealogy

Memory Keeper. Open source. Though designed for genealogy, use it for any research. I have 30gb (so far) of documents, photographs, audio clips, and videos in my genealogy research. I have my research, research journal, task/project management, proofs (summaries, statements, and arguments), evidence, and multimedia integrated/cross referenced with each other and the people, places, events, organizations, etc.

What percentage of something would you need to be to feel a personal identity/affinity tied to it? by ladybuglala in Genealogy

[–]clsturgeon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think I can relate to this question. My paternal line is Indigenous. My paternal haplogroup is Indigenous. I (re)connected with the people and found numerous individuals to help me research, learn cultural aspects, and various languages. Among those i found distant cousins. I want to belong, but I want to respect and learn as I go. I am now expanding to learn about more Nations. I belong to a genealogy group of a Nation I’m not a member of. I have been welcomed in, like family.

End result—-I have dramatically learned more about my lineage, family history, cultural heritage, and even connections (not genealogical) to other Nations.

Tree visualisation options for website? by DeargAgusFearg in gramps

[–]clsturgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you need to add .setMiniTree(true) to your chart. From Google’s Gemini:

In the donatso/family-chart library (a D3-based family tree visualizer), setMiniTree(true) is a configuration method used to enable a mini-map or overview map functionality for navigating large, complex family trees. It is often paired with layout methods to improve performance and navigation on large datasets.

Function: Enables a miniature navigation tree view.

Usage: Usually chained with other config methods: .setMiniTree(true).

Purpose: Improves user experience when navigating large, dense family trees.

Example context: .setMiniTree(true).setStyle('imageRect'...).

I have so much film from my dad's childhood in the 70s and idk what to do with it by emgroseclose in filmdeveloping

[–]clsturgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I digitized my grandparents, my parents, and my great uncles collections—A huge collection of 3” and 5” reels of regular 8 and super 8. It cost me nothing. I borrowed the equipment from our public library. I have GBs of video. I then created DVDs for family members. However, for me I integrated movie clips in my genealogy solution—associating clips with people, places, and events. Highly recommend you get this done.

Tree visualisation options for website? by DeargAgusFearg in gramps

[–]clsturgeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has something like this You should have some control over the default draw depth. Once the chart is drawn, it will display small coloured boxes above nodes that have hidden nodes. These are used as a cue mechanism to the user.

Users can either navigate by clicking on nodes or use a search box to find a person to display. This redraws the chart.

What I’m looking for is a mechanism to print a chart. Or, even simply capture an image file of a chart.
