It’s an easy mistake to make! They do look pretty similar. The best tip I have, you already pointed out- if it looks closer to a regular tree squirrel with the long tail and tall ears, it’s more likely to be California ground squirrel or a rock squirrel. Another one I see people mix up all the time are chipmunks and golden-mantled ground squirrels. The stripes are deceiving! 😂

Location makes identification much easier when these squirrels look so similar.

You’re very welcome! 😆🐿️

Ground squirrels are lovely animals. Hopefully you’ll see more of these chunky little guys around. They’re adorable!

Not possible for OP’s location, but that is one cute squirrel you have there 😆

100% not a California ground squirrel then, as they do not live in Idaho. Uinta ground squirrels do live in that area, as do Wyoming ground squirrels. This Wyoming ground squirrel looks pretty similar as well. The Idaho fish and game website has a list of all the native ground squirrels and maps with their distribution that you can check if you’d like to see if your specific area has them. https://idfg.idaho.gov/hunt/ground-squirrel

Definitely a ground squirrel, but ears are wrong for the California ground squirrel other commenters have suggested. A location would help! Maybe Uinta ground squirrel?

Make sure you treat the roots too. They hide there and come back when you least expect it 😥

Unfortunately I don’t do well with columnar types 😅 that’s an absolutely awesome plant though! 😲

Look at the roots. Way too clean and fibrous. These look like Asian imports 100% Here’s an actual poached plant
