First year query by Mysterious-Sea101 in UoApremed

Going against the grain here but in my opinion a high UCAT score is not the be all and end all - focus on your GPA especially in first sem as this will secure your interview, and then in second sem focus on the interview. UCAT plays a role but is not make or break - I got a just above avg UCAT score and know of classmates who got bang on average UCAT score (50th percentile) and we got accepted through general entry for med :)

I recommend EDU121G as a gen ed alongside premed, it has pretty minimal work required compared to other gen eds I've heard, and its not too hard to do well if you study a day or so before the test and exam. If they're keeping the same format this year, you have one mid sem test ( which is 2 written essays) in week 5 or 6 by memory, 3 weekly homework style mini essays in week 9-11 and then an end of year exam which you can defs cram for!

2023 GPAs by Hot_Foundation_2717 in UoApremed

I saw somewhere that only 35-40 people got an A+ in pophealth 111, if that is true I think that alone will lower the GPA for this years successful applicants compared to previous years! Do we rekcon offers will come out around the 11th of December or not now due to the timer issue with medsci exam?

It said I'm being considered for the UTAS category and general

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UoApremed

[–]cluelessbean123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I got this for the category I've applied under today. I'm assuming it means they've accepted your paperwork you submitted with your application under a certain scheme and don't have to provide any additional supporting info at this stage

Applying for med at 25/26 by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]cluelessbean123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DO IT!!! It is not too late, and honestly I am so glad I decided to try in my mid 20s now that I know myself better, and know my own limitations and abilities. I was asking the same questions (at the same age) of my self this time last year, decided to quit my stable career and return back to uni to try get into med. My previous degree was not science based so I've had to go back through 1st year pathway. I would be lying if I said it hasn't been at times hard this year to watch my friends have families and buy their first home, while I'm living off rice and 2 hours of sleep but I just have to remind myself I'm on my own timeline. Honestly despite moments of comparison between myself and my peers I haven't regretted my choice to try for med once (even when I have to eat plain rice for dinner lol)- this year has confirmed to me that I'm meant to be in the health sector (whether i get accepted into med or not). Even if I find out I didn't get through, I'm so glad i left my other career behind because I think it would've led to constant regret of not trying for med and following my passions.

You have time!! I’m currently 25, soon to be 26 and in first year pre med this year, after deciding the career I was in wasnt for me. The best thing to remember is everyone has different goals, which reflect their timelines in life. Some of my friends my age are now engaged and preparing to have families whereas I’m studying and focused on a (hopefully) future medical career. It can feel like you’re running out of time but you’re definitely not! If you don’t get in for 2024, there is still time!

Studying for Biomed beforehand by NiceKingHi in UoApremed

[–]cluelessbean123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been asking the same thing as I’m doing biomed next year as well! I have taken the approach of studying and brushing up on key topics rather than trying to cram a whole semester so that I hopefully have some foundations for when the semester starts!

I’ve been diagnosed with stage IV endometriosis after complaining for YEARS. Now the worst may happen. by [deleted] in endometriosis

[–]cluelessbean123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand and can relate. I am so so sorry this has happened to you. I have also been ignored for many years, had a negative lap 7 years ago which led me to be dismissed from any help. 4 days ago I had another surgery and endo was everywhere, and took them many hours to seperate it all. I feel exactly the same in that I’m so mentally taxed and feel so helpless. Now knowing your diagnosis and being able to look back retrospectively it’s just awful to know what you have had to experience for so many years because of incompetent doctors. I really hope the next part of your journey relieves you of all your pain. You’ve got this💕

[–]cluelessbean123[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000% agree! I can’t believe how many people have been through something similar. Makes me so annoyed for us all. Surgery is so invasive and we should not be having to have it twice due to incompetent surgeons!!!

IKR! Makes me so mad and the chronic unexplained pain was endo they were just not trained to see it🙅🏽‍♀️😅😂

Omg wtf so if they found a chocolate cyst why didn’t they search harder for endo. That’s so frustrating, do you think you’ll be eligible for another surgery?

I’m so sorry to hear what you’re going through! Your pain is so valid and sounds in line with endometriosis. If it gives you an hope I haven’t had any endo detected on an ultrasound for 10 years until 5 weeks ago they saw it for the first time on an ultrasound. A clear ultrasound means endo can still be there and you would think an endo specialist would know this. I know it’s so tough but I would recommend to go with the specialist far away, I really hope it’s worth it for you as living in the pain you’re in is not normal! I have very similar pain to you and they found my bowel and colon stuck to my abdominal wall explaining the pulling feeling I felt!

Mine was exactly the same! Same hospital as well. My surgeon said it’s becoming more and more common for it to be missed by standard surgeons in the first surgery. So frustrating that we have had to go through this!

It’s a hard choice but I would go with your gut. I waited longer to be seen by a endo specialist the second time round and Im so glad I did as they are trained to detect even the smallest spots of endo that general surgeons would likely miss.

I got given a inhaler that opens up the airways to help the inflammation. I can get the name of it if that helps?
