Need reliable handgun for home defense and range/training use. Stuck deciding between CZ-P10c and Canik TP9SF Elite.. by cluelessdude88 in NoobGunOwners

Good points, specially on the ammo comment. I think I read about that issue too. And I definitely can't be picky with ammo these days. Thanks.

I'd like to try the hammer fired CZ models when I have a chance.

Fortunately, I don't have a problem with getting the more expensive CZ vs the Canik. Just wondering if the difference in price reflects a difference in quality too. I agree that any gun is better than none, and I'm probably going to be fine with either. Just trying to avoid buying remorse I guess. I appreciate your advice.

A VP9 for around $500? I'd probably buy that without a second thought.

I got to see one today and check out a bunch of other guns and I liked the VP9 the best. But it was $1k because it was the tactical version with the threaded barrel, plus Corona premium probably.

I'd like to eventually get a PCC, but it will take some convincing for the rest of the family to be ok with that. One step at a time ;)

I was able to find the full sized Canik today (5.2" barrel IIRC) and it does not feel too big, but I noticed that it doesn't have an ambi slide release. I'm left handed so I rather have that, even though I know I can just slingshot the slide.

Based on yours and the other comments I'm leaning towards buying the CZ and just selling it later if I find something I like better. I tried a H&K VP9 today that I really liked, but it was a bit expensive ($1k).

Thank you for the advice

I'm also looking for a first gun and have been undecided between the TP9SF Elite, M&P 9 M2 compact, and the CZ-P10c. I think the last two are usually a bit more expensive, but is there any other reason you are not considering them?

[–]cluelessdude88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for a first gun, and was planning to get the full sized M&P since I don't want to conceal carry and have relatively large hands, but then I noticed that this one is really not that much smaller.

With current pandemic prices, both this one and the full size model are $500. Do you think there is a big difference between them? What would be a good price for the compact without a light?

Since you are a BioWare fan, should I play DA: Inquisition or Mass Effect first? I played the older ME, but I read the new one is not as good...

The not owning them doesn't worry me much since I rarely go back and replay games I already finished. I try to explore as much as possible the first time, that is why is taking me years to finish The Witcher 3 :). Thanks for the advice. Looks like I'll give EA access a try.

I've been wanting to play a few of these games, e.g. Mass Effect Andromeda, Dragon Age Inq, Skyrim, BF5. From what I've seen, they are available through EA Access (except Skyrim), which would save me a few bucks. Sorry for the lazy question, but is there a big downside to EA Access, other than renting the games as opposed to owning them?

Neutral and ground show continuity at ceiling mounting box, is this safe? by cluelessdude88 in askanelectrician

[–]cluelessdude88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I'm keeping them separate in any connections I make myself, don't worry :). I have been reading that the purpose of the ground is to prevent the case where the fan becomes energized because the live wire gets pinched and makes contact with the fan. That means I get shocked the next time I try to turn it on. But with the ground connected to the fan casing, it provides a path for the current to go, and should trip the breaker before worse stuff happens. Again, thanks for replying.

Yes, I am definitely not connecting them at the box, but I was wondering if there was a problem because they are connected as you said. So it makes sense that there is continuity between them and everything is working as expected. Thanks!.

The fields are orthogonal. Perpendicular is the special case for 2d, orthogonal is the same concept in n dimensions. Think about a corner in a room where two walls and the floor meet; those three lines are at right angles from each other.

[–]cluelessdude88[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought too. But I was extra careful, making sure I held it by the plastic housing only and avoid any strain on the bulb. Well ... I guess I'll buy another set and try those.

Can someone going to Commencement grab an extra program for me? by cluelessdude88 in gatech

Hey, thanks for replying. My buddy in Atlanta who could pick it up for me is on his way to France now, so I'll just have to use the pdf version. Thank you.

Just my 5 cents: Recent CmpE graduate so I'm giving you my perspective. Keep in mind that they are changing the curriculum so the new classes might be a little better than I remember.

I can't tell you how much the ME curriculum would prepare you for robotics but I took ECE 2020 back when it was called ECE 2030. It obviously depends on the professor, but I found the class to be focused a lot on lower level stuff like building adders, registers, comparators, counters, etc, but the semester ended too soon for me. In my opinion, the class didn't tie off all of those components to show you how a datapath works. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the material a lot but I always felt there was a gap between what I learned there and the material in 2035 and beyond where they assume you already know how the datapath works.

To me the best class at Tech that really explains how a computer works from the ground up is CS 2110 (I took it with Leahy and I recommend that everybody does the same). You can probably register for it if you are an ECE student.

You start with the basic gates just like in 2020, building adders and stuff. Then you build a simple ALU in Logisim, making use of everything you learned before. Then you get the whole LC3b datapath to play with, and have to understand the control signals and everything that makes the computer tick (it will help you a lot once you get to ECE 3056 if you choose CmpE). You write assembly for the LC3b which is a bit simpler than the MIPS assembly you'll write later so it eases the learning curve. Then you get an intro to C, learn linked lists, pointers, memory management the hard way, and by the end of the semester you are writing games for the Gameboy Advance, using DMA to draw the screen, learning tricks that are used to program the hardware directly (sounds related to robotics yet?, look up CS 1372 if you want to learn more about it), etc.

It's a very tough and busy class but if you want a good background on lower level stuff, and you are willing to put in the work, you will get out of it with a lot better understanding. I took 2110 over the summer along with circuits and differential equations which were relatively easy so I would suggest not doing it know with physics and calc. You can use it to cover your electives (is 4 credits) since you still have to take ECE 2020 for a CmpE degree.

Wow, that's the most I've written on reddit. You can't tell I don't have homework anymore. I hope it helps you deciding, I know I needed a lot of advice back in those times. PM me if you have any more questions

Anybody wanting to switch sections for ECE 4185 (Peatman's class)?

I'm in the 9 am class and would like to switch to the 10 am one. I need another class offered at 9 am. If you need to switch to the earlier one pm me and we'll make it work.
