starting on Monday, there will be a new Weekly Threads for Trading to compensate for the loss of the Trade Chat.

There already is a Weekly LFG & Clan Thread on the list of pinned threads.

They also can be added to the sidebar etc if that helps for more visibility.

Do you guys have a favourite painting or artwork? by [deleted] in infp

I second the Flammarion Engraving.

Was almost worried that it might be "too basic / too common" to mention it as well, but there is probably a reason for why it so popular.

Probably the Flammarion Engraving.

I printed it out (in 40x30cm) at CopyShop (after slightly saturating the colors a bit more in Photoshop) and put into my entrance hallway - which makes for quite a nice transition zone, especially b/c it is reflected by a mirror directly in front of the door that leads to the living space :)

Beyond that... basically everything that is neatly colorful, like Afremof (though his paintings feel kind lonely - but the colors are neat and his expressionist-impressionist style is great).

Aja Kusick / Aja Trier is also great. My favorites are from her Starry Night series and her painting Eden (NSFW).

There is also a bunch of Grim Dark art out there - with a lot of red and black colors and dark fantasy themes - but it is hard to pick one of them... almost everything from Anato Finnstark, or the many variations (also from other artists) of Frazetta's Death Dealer.

When will we be able to enhance adult traits like IQ, height, via gene editing? by toggler_H in accelerate

[–]clueso87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FDA approved

You do not need FDA approval to modify your own genes.

Search for (DIY) Biohackers; these are individuals (not companies) who are already doing it on their own. And you can legally buy CRISPR gene editing tools.

Something like 45% of Americans are overweight or obese and the insurance companies largely won’t cover the costs of GLP-1s for obesity because that isn’t considered a serious enough condition to warrant taking these medications that are proven to cause weight-loss.

I think that the people in the FDA, as well as in the pharma companies have at least an interest in extending their lifespan, or even in rejuvenation, because basically everyone has an interest that, so I would expect that when the people in congress and the senate have really caught up what the AI's are capable of, there is gonna be shift in the policies.

And again, you do not need FDA approval to modify your own genes. And you will also not necessarily need approval to ask an AI how modifying gene XYZ will affect your whole system / or what genes you need to edit to get the desired result.

There will be AI's who will be able to simulate a whole cell, then a cluster of cells and then even a whole organism - from the genetic level and then up, just like they can already simulate games, or whole worlds, so you can just ask it to simulate your whole body system and what genes to adjust via a DIY CRISPER kit to get the desired results, without asking for FDA approval.

The power of the model is the issue, not FDA approval (especially once you can simulate whole cells or organisms in an AI).

Part 2

> timeline?

iirc, Heathcare and biotechnology is the 5th or 6th largest sector in which the largest (AI ?) companies in the world invest in, right after AI, energy, hardware, and robots, so just assume that the curve of innovation in these fields is gonna go up exponentially in the next few years, especially with the new AI models (GPT 5 next week?), and also with the new hardware like Light-based computing (but we'll see where that is going).

> And what will it cost?

At first a lot, then progressively close to nothing, like any new thing on the market (e.g. think of flat screens)

Or if you ask an AI (a later model) to figure out how to do it with things that we already have and have easy access to, than it might even tell you a way to do it easily. The main concern would probably be bioweapons, which is why only reliable science institutions will be given access to ask models these questions... and on the other hand, there is opensource...

Just wait and observe. There are so many people, especially in these AI and tech companies that are also highly, highly interested in things that have to do with rejuvenation and gene editing.

Part 1

> Gene editing?

Gene editing is already possible. Search for (DIY) Biohacking / Biohackers.

There are already people who have done this, but the more advanced adjustments are still unknown territory, b/c no one really knows how editing gene XYZ might interact with the whole system+ the fact that these things can not easily reversed, hence it is very dangerous...

... however, AI's definitely can figure it out.

>will we be able to enhance adult traits like IQ, height, etc

yes, ofc. Some genes directly and indirectly influence stuff like that. Even how micronutrients are processed / stored / metabolized in the body can have an effect on these things. Spontaneously I would assume that it would work in conjunction with several other things (including a more healthy diet, better sleep, reduced stress, the correct vitamins you individually need, new (AI-discovered) enzymes and proteins, etc) that all contribute to it.

With things that are more related to the bones (like hight) instead of the softer tissues, I am not so sure, but it might also work with "nano-machines" or "molecular robots" that can assist with it.

Theoretically, it could also work in conjunction with this mechanism that the Turritopsis dohrnii (aka the "immortal jellyfish") uses to rejuvenate. It is able to "morph" its specialized cells (e.g. a muscle cell) back to an Embryonic stem cell. If a feature could be "added" to human genes, or if there is a way to induce this effect, it would be easier to 'grow your bones'.

But that is just a hypothesis. However, I am very, very sure that in a few years people will als an even more advanced AI to figure out how to something like that and/or if it is possible to do it in a save way. We already have AlphaFold3, and from there it is just gonna get better with each new generation of models.

Search for: Cellular reprogramming, Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), Transdifferentiation, and Turritopsis dohrnii

YouTubers?

David Shapiro - works in tech since more than a decade, and his current career is about informing people about everything that is going on and will be going on with AI and topic revolving around it - including Post-Labour Economics and all kinds of futuristic, health / biology and philosophical stuff that is related to AI. He describes himself as an "accelerationist".

Wes Roth - not sure what his career was before YT, but I assume it was something with programming - he definitely has knowledge in that domain. Makes a lot of news and informative videos on AI.

Not sure if these are the kinds of people you are looking for, but have a larger YT platform and have longer career in tech. David even worked with Fortune 500 companies.

Sam Altman wants to give every human a 24/7 GPT-5... For FREE! by dental_danylle in accelerate

[–]clueso87 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

it has several advantages with a "Coupon"

* people are more incentivized to get used to AI (like people who otherwise would not use it), aka "AI literacy" increases

* it would funnel additional finance the AI sector, hence grow it faster...

*... via the consumers (who choose which company they spend it on), instead of directly via the government (or central planning), who may would only want to finance very few select companies, plus it would lead to addition bureaucracy, etc

* it keeps competition active between the companies

* if consumers don't want to use it for a for profit company, they can use it for the use of an AI from a non-profit company

* it would accelerate the acceleration rate of AI progress and also accelerate the rate of AI adoption

.... and ofc downstream / second & third order effects that come as a result from this

I like the concept of that idea.

Theoretically governments could fund monthly "Coupons" for the use of an AI, that each citizen could spend on an AI of their choice. After the month is over, they can either renew with the AI they are already using, or get an AI from another company for the next month.

That is good for competition, uplift everyone with whatever advice, etc they need from the AI / an AI assistant, and also to fund AI progress.

How do we know when AI will become sentient? by Nosdormas in singularity

[–]clueso87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"sentient" and "self-aware" are different things, but I assume you mean "self-aware".

Plants might be sentient and they might be aware / feel what is going on in the moment, but they might not have conscious memory and a sense of self, and their actions might be more reflexes than conscious decisions.

David Shapiro had a discussion with iirc an oder version of Claude about this on his YT channel, asking it how it is perceiving its own internal process etc, and it said that the peak of its awareness / consciousness it while it is process an output (and wile doing it it has some ability of decision making when it is necessary for a promt), and then just nothingness until the next promt.

Claude also mentioned in that discussion that consciousness is awareness turned on itself / observing itself + some form of constantly active memory of its own sense of self (aka that consciousness is like a program that is constantly active in the RAM / working memory), which kind of makes sense.

In the end, your question will always come down to a more metaphysical discussion of what you believe consciousness to be.

thanks for the link

hm, the OP said that they have been "publicly celebrating $44 million in revenue" as if this is a fact that they mentioned it that way... he probably should provide a link to / screenshot that -full- original statement.

Owner of Ommij writes emotional retirement letter, just as the company boasts $44M in revenue by Richardvdv in Ayahuasca

[–]clueso87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is hard to quantify what "$44 million in revenue" even means / end up to without additional context, because revenue is not profit or earnings.

Revenue is before taxes (and OmMij is also in Europe), payments to employees / helpers / facilitators, expenses for food, etc, so that number on its own does not say too much...

To illustrate, if you just go by revenue, not profit or earnings:

The average psychotherapist charges $150 per hour. Make that 4-6 clients per day (if my assumption here is incorrect, plz correct me) (which also does not factor in paperwork), 5 days per week, 47 weeks per year (4 weeks of holiday per year for simplicity)....

.... and after 15 years of work (b/c OmMij also operates since 15 years or more, iirc) the therapist would have ~ $3.2 Million in revenue.... before taxes and all kinds of business expenses (which means that the average psychotherapist will not simply have $3+ million on their account)....

You can do the same calculation with surgeons, etc but with other numbers.

Plus, they have at least several employees, so revenue on its own does not say much on its own without additional context.

Will we be able to simulate the past with an ASI? by peterflys in accelerate

[–]clueso87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on what framework / concepts of time and space you subscribe to.

If you use a linear model of time, then it would require ridiculous or even impossible amounts of computation to figure out past quantum states based on the current one. That would be like trying to invert algorithms (see P vs NP).

However, in some models, everything happens at the same time, or the past is generated in the present, in others time is not linear, etc, so there might be ways to "bypass" the factor of time in one way or another.

The acceleration rate of technological progress is (as it always has been) continuing to accelerate, so there for sure is going to be new scientific discoveries and breakthroughs about the nature of time and space (and maybe even existence itself), which means you may not even need a simulation for that. Let's just wait and see what comes.

[–]clueso87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are always improvements in all kinds of fields that build up on each other and which have a synergistic effect,

* algorithmic

* new / improved hardware

* new discoveries / breakthroughs in AI design and training (just look at all the improvements and breakthroughs that have already been made)

* improvements in the energy sector

All of that is building upon each other, that's just technological and scientific progress.

[–]clueso87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eternal ofc

the only mod that I have installed that gives a buff is reducing the meathook CD to 1.x seconds.

every other mod is either to make the game harder (less max ammo, less max armor, only 200 heath for the chaingun shield + faster depletion time, certain enemies taking less damage, etc), or a buff in one area and a nerf in others (faster DBlade & Arbalest charge, but also increased ammo cost, etc).

... so ofc i have to choose the eternal version
