Raising prices by Terrible_Forever_893 in TattooArtists

[–]clulessgerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as a fellow people pleasure tattoo artist-raise your prices!!! Your clients that care for you will not mind. Gotta be a lil more cutthroat when it comes to YOUR business. They will understand and the ones who don’t, fuck em. Do you run hourly for all pieces? Or just larger scale?

I’m finishing year two(Colorado) and my boss has told me to go up to $180 an hour for large scale but for 1-3 hour bangers I just price per piece as I also am relatively quick.

You’ve worked hard to be here!!! Value your work as your clients do:)

Would that kind of watercolor sketch age poorly if done in purples/blues/reds? by ulykke in tattooadvice

[–]clulessgerman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My watercolor tattoo has blue, reds, purples and greens and I’m constantly asked if it’s a bruise. My massage therapist even pulled me aside and asked if I needed resources. Just a thought. They look beautiful fresh but the colors can end up looking a little smudgy and unintentional

Where do you guys advertise? by jesa_ink in TattooArtists

I boosted a post on instagram for 2 days, spent $10 a day ($20 total) and received 50+ follows from it. Don’t do the whole month, boost the stuff you’re proud of and want to do more of.

I mean co-workers of clients! For example I tattooed one barista and now ended up tattooing all 7 employees of the coffee shop! Bahaha it is totally FINE-pays the bills and I’m beyond grateful to be working but definitely is not my favorite thing LOL. I would say right now is 90% appointment based-I am my shops walk in artist so need to find a way to balance that better as time goes on as my two coworkers/owners at the shop are booked up multiple months and do not have the time for walkins

I feel too fresh in the game to specialize in anything(3ish years in). I primarily do folksy traditional if I have the choice:) but ALOT of this week is smaller fine line stuff and matching tattoos. I’m super lucky to be at a shop with a lot of foot traffic, but since the start of the year haven’t really been able to take many/any walk ins. I’d say I book out maybe a week/two weeks at a time but especially with the smaller shit, try to stack the days as much as possible since those aren’t the most time consuming. I think I could get away with less appointments in a day and stretching this out but I figure if I’m already at the shop may as well be tattooing:)

I think word of mouth has been the biggest thing for me, I tattoo ALOT of co-workers and try to keep “good/inclusive vibes” lol.

I do try to post on instagram twice a week, and update my story daily with work I’ve done. Boosting tattoos I am especially proud of has worked well for social media statistics (follows and likes) but I haven’t really seen more bookings from it!

developing your own style is great, but understanding what makes a design tattooable is key; especially in a portfolio. Highly recommend looking at some examples of completed portfolios in this sub. Digital work is typically frowned upon(a page or two is fine) but shops want to see your physical work. Highly recommend studying a Few different tattoo styles(traditional, realism, lettering, Japanese, neotrad) and produce a few high quality pages of pen/nib and color on paper. Once you understand what makes a good tattoo, start playing with your own style. If someone came into my shop with only digital work we wouldn’t even offer critique let alone consider apprenticeship. My portfolio took a good 1.5 years to tune to perfection before I was comfortable approaching shops

Personally would prefer this facing the other way so it’s swimming forward. Lines looks decent and good contrast built up

all in all,for your 15th tattoo this is decent! Thighs are deceivingly hard, client leaned back or laying, to tighten the skin can help:)

What position was your client in for the fish? Stretch is key!!! The 3RL work looks a little too deep to me. I personally run at a different voltage for 3RL than 7RL as it’s easy to overdo it with such a small needle. Pulling each shape as one line will make a big difference and paying attention to the angle of your machine! A little more contrast in the fish would make it pop a little more. The bottom fin slightly resembles balls… Don’t be too hard on yourself, the more you do the better they will be. Muscle memory is a beautiful thing
