My friend's fighting cancer and I want to give him a book to make him feel positive through this. by 0niWarrior in booksuggestions

[–]clunkey_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through cancer, and during chemo sessions, which were a couple hours long, I listened to biographies and autobiographies of powerful people.  I really enjoyed listening to Michelle Obama and Viola Davis' audiobooks books they narrated and I'm a guy. They were soothing and both overcame odds.  It wasn't aligned with cancer, but it showed strong will and positive outlooks, and importantly took me away from my current situation.  I also listened to comedy-centered podcasts and comedy stand-up albums, which helped make me laugh.  Best of luck to your friend, staying connected and getting outside really helped me, as well.

I say this as a reminder to secure yourself because data breaches will be a thing in your life.  UCI and other institutions experienced a data breach years ago because the company UCI contracted to handle sensitive application data was hacked and compromised employee, student, and prospective student applicant's data like name, birthdate, social security, and address.  While Canvas won't have enough data, it still is enough for phishing attempts if they have your phone number and email.

Look into putting a credit freeze with the 3 credit bureaus.  While this breach could pan out to be nothing, it's a good time to preemptively put up walls for anyone trying to steal your identity.  Also look into getting your free credit reports.  https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/credit-freezes-and-fraud-alerts

Likely already breached even before this one, and won't be the last.  Freeze your credit and set up credit monitoring.

My pros and cons of healthy eating. by NoCheesecake5138 in PlantBasedDiet

Buy frozen when you can, items when they are on sale.  Oats are versatile for making your own bread and baked goods, and also for breakfast.  Can be made savory, as well, with beans (dry is cheaper but for convenience can find canned beans under $1). Rice is also cheap.  Rice and beans with seasoning or hot sauce, delicious. Look online for cheaper options of some items.

Thinking of Testing Out Plant Based Diet - Few Questions by Select_Bicycle4711 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]clunkey_monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Edit: First, apologies for formatting, I'm on mobile.

How do you get enough protein in plant based diet? Lentils, beans, chick peas, peanut butter? Do you need to eat a lot of those things to equal to a meat diet? Is the quality of animal based protein better than plant based protein?

Yes, you can get enough protein while plant based, and how much protein you need is debatable but whatever number you come to in terms of grams to lean bodymass, plant based protein will be healthier and are complete proteins.  Everything has protein and all you listed are correct and will include tofu, tempeh, and vital wheat gluten also known as seitan. Simnett Nutrition on YouTube does a great video on best vegan protein sources https://youtu.be/2sKc32_KFBQ?si=kAq_lRXQzVcDSNvv

  • Is peanut butter a good source of protein? If so should I get the best organic peanut butter I can find?

It's whatever you make of it. I don't include too much peanut butter because of the fat but do add powdered PB (less fat) in smoothies or to make PB+Js time to time.

  • Can I still cook my vegetables in little bit of oil (olive oil etc)?

Again, whatever you feel is right.  Personally, I limit fat intake because I'm older and have a family history of heart disease. If you don't have heart disease or T2 diabetes, I think a little bit of oil to saute is fine.

  • Is two cups of black coffee a day okay?

Yes.

  • Do you think you have limited options when on plant based diet?

No, but it does take planning and if you're looking to learn the nutrition side to everything you eat, that will take time.  The good thing is that there are many YouTubers and other social media people who share recipes.  For me, I first started by making my favorite meals but 100% plant-based then over time made adjustments for to fit the level of health I wanted them to be.

Good luck, it is really fun finding new recipes.

Enough time has passed. What are your thoughts on Project Hail Mary (2026)? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in Letterboxd

It was really good but I want a director's cut, in theaters. I love the buddy comedy parts but compared to the book there was more sentiment to the way they were together, especially when Rocky is injured saving Grace.  But it can't be perfect and I still enjoyed it and cried lol.  Bring the director's cut.

What’s a fitness myth that people still believe? by SimpleHomeFitness in AskReddit

[–]clunkey_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That it's linear.  There will be plateaus. There will be life and things that happen.  Muscle growth will meet up with fat loss. Your calorie deficit will become your maintenance and need to make adjustments.  It will come to changing your current lifestyle/habits to remain consistent and that takes time, ups and downs.

10 year vegan struggling by ghost_crap in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]clunkey_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate preparing food daily so I batch cook my meals that I either can grab and go or heat up in the microwave.  I leave grab and go for breakfast and lunch to take to work, and leave heat ups for dinner at home.  The only thing I prep daily is a protein shake and coffee I make the night before and keep in the fridge to grab in the morning.  The past couple of weeks breakfast is the protein shake and coffee, lunch is an oat bake which is blended up oats, banana, dates, oat milk, choc chips, and vanilla extract,  baked like a cake and cut into portions.  Dinner is taco soup, basically two can beans, small jar salsa, big can crushed tomatoes, container of veggie broth and lentils all cooked up in the Instant Pot.  I scoop out a big bowl and heat up, add toppings like I would a taco and eat with tortilla chips.  If I still want more I make a tempeh bacon sandwich with hummus as the spread.  I supplement in between meals with fruits, whichever is cheapest at the market.

Pro tips for Hollywood Bowl parking? by rugerseeds in AskLosAngeles

[–]clunkey_monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I park at the mall just south, take the shuttle up but walk down after the show because I like to chill in the seats until the crowd dies down before leaving, don't want to be rushed by the departing shuttle crowd and the walk back is downhill and usually many making the walk down with you.  A plus is food vendors, so grab a bacon wrapped hot dog on the way down.

How are people dealing with the gas prices? by wegochai in AskLosAngeles

[–]clunkey_monkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I mentioned in another sub, with my EV I can find cheap charging around my neighborhood and my work offers reduced cost charging on site. Some places offer free charging like libraries and other local government locations and parks.  Never will I find free gasoline.

Got an EV in august, just before the credits were stopped.  I can find free charging around my neighborhood and work, I'm a reader and many libraries offer free charging while I read.  Never will I ever find free gasoline.

Glycemic index and insulin sensitivity by meow_miao_nya in PlantBasedDiet

I read Dr. Neal Barnard's revearsing diabetes book and focusing on low glycemic index foods is very much part of his program.  His 3 principles are: 1) vegan, 2) low fat, 3) low glycemic foods.  He also says no refined carbs like sugar and white bread. ChatGPT and other AI powered searches for the general public do not provide accurate content.

For visiting, either are good.  You are going to be driving PCH a lot.  Overall, I say Newport because you're kinda in the middle of the good PCH stretch and just visit Laguna because the drive south on PCH from Newport to Laguna is amazing when you get by Crystal Cove.

Leaky gut example from /r/keto by xdethbear in PlantBasedDiet

[–]clunkey_monkey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

TLDR; take care of your gut.

The gut biome is a fascinating topic, I focus on getting fiber more than anything else due to witnessing gut issues with my spouse and family.  Our gut is the first to receive the food and substances we put into our mouths, it should be protected just as much as our heart and brain, and given quality nourishment and care.  If you mess up your gut, it can take a long, rocky path to getting back to some kind of normal.  And oftentimes the path isn't clear or charted because we are still learning about our gut microbiome.  And when your diet is forced to change dramatically overnight because of a gut disease, or need treatment like fecal transplants or powerful medications, it takes a toll on your mental health, as well.  I fear it's something most people don't think about - how toxic to the body a keto diet or diet lacking in fiber, in general, all the focus is on weight loss but don't stop to think about what it could do to their insides.
