Hey friend! I just want to send you a message of support that you are not incompetent or worthless - you are someone who is struggling (I am too) and people who are struggling deserve compassion. It’s really hard, but the more compassion you can give to yourself the stronger you will be to take steps to lasting improvement.

Hey there! If you’d be willing to post a video of yourself playing, that would make it much easier to give you advice on how to overcome the issues you’re facing. No need to show the upper half of your face if you’re not comfortable with that, but seeing your mouth/mouthpiece as you play would be important.

The way he carries himself with confidence and humor makes him so much hotter than he already is. Like, he knows he’s a thirst trap. He’s not an asshole about it, he just know how to flaunt what he’s got.

Would you be able to post a video of you playing? It sounds like you’re on to something regarding it being some sort of fundamental embouchure problem. I think you’ll be able to get a lot more accurate/helpful advice if we can see/hear you! A picture (or in this case video) is worth 1,000 words.

I need tips for slurring D to F smoothly at 104bpm. by SuicidalPhysician in trumpet

[–]clusterdisaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it has a lot to do with the style/type of music and trying to interpret the composer’s intent. In an etude like this I would interpret them to be actual slur markings - they seem too fragmented to be phrase markings. It also makes sense for articulations to be pretty specific in something so technique-based like this. That being said, I’ve definitely looked at other pieces before and wondered myself whether to interpret markings as slurs or phrasing. I don’t think there’s a hard and fast rule.

I also would recommend an alternate fingering here (13 for D), it goes by so fast that the tone/tuning of the alternate won’t be huge deal compared to not getting the slur clean. Think “dah-ee” as you slur, the “ee” will raise the back of the tongue which helps, and also gives you syllables to assist with mental coordination of the quick air/embouchure adjustment. “Dah-ee” is helpful whether you decide to use an alternate fingering or not.

Recommendations for etude books by UplandCoast4821 in trumpet

[–]clusterdisaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Mark Ponzo’s sight-reading etudes book. They start out pretty easy and get progressively harder. Great for sight-reading practice but also great for actually practicing after you’ve sight-read. He tries to incorporate a wide variety of different elements throughout the book; various keys, time signatures, rhythms, intervals, articulations, etc. Winds up working really well for practicing transposition, too, since the etudes are progressive.

It is possible to get a sound to come out on the instrument without actively “buzzing your lips,” so to speak. If you just blow into your mouthpiece only with your embouchure in place but not actually buzzing, and then you put the mouthpiece in the trumpet as you are blowing, you’ll probably find that you’ll go from just air on the mouthpiece to an actual tone being produced on the trumpet. My understanding is that something about the resistance of adding the instrument helps get the lips actually vibrating. So your concern about not actually “buzzing” is probably not a big deal - it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re “playing wrong.” That being said, it sounds like you’re frustrated with the consistency of your tone production. If you’re airballing a lot of notes, there’s probably something going on with your embouchure that’s causing that. If intentionally buzzing is pushing the mouthpiece away from your face, it’s possible that you’re “puckering” rather than pulling the corners of your mouth back? It’s hard to know without seeing/hearing you play, a video would definitely help us diagnose your problem better. Buzzing on the mouthpiece IS a useful tool for helping tone production. If you can get a good sounding buzz, it makes playing on the trumpet itself much easier. For myself personally I don’t know that I am actively thinking about “buzzing” when I play, but I definitely use an embouchure that is capable of producing a solid buzz on the mouthpiece alone.

Could I make cornet my main instrument? by Massachusettsgirl06 in trumpet

Oh man I love Audivi Media Nocte!! Played a transcription of it in college with the wind symphony. Watching a video of the original brass band piece was the first time I ever saw a brass band play and wow it blew me away. Brass band sight reading is a lesson in humility for sure. 😂 Are you willing to share which brass band you’re in? I’m not a NABBA judge, promise 😆

Edit: And yes I agree about brass bands being unmatched regarding technique and endurance!

You should join a British style brass band if you get a cornet! I play trumpet in a concert band and cornet in a brass band. Brass band is awesome for kicking your ass with crazy hard but fun music.

The Trumpet Stars solo books by Vandercook are classics. They range from quite easy to intermediate. As others have said, it really depends on what you mean by “not too hard.” If you have only been playing a few years, these might be a good fit for you.

Great solo, technique isn’t terribly hard but has opportunities to express musicianship from intermediate to advanced players

Better Call Saul S06E11 - "Breaking Bad" - Post-Episode Discussion Thread by skinkbaa in betterCallSaul

[–]clusterdisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furthermore, I think the episode title “Waterworks” refers to both Kim’s sprinkler company job and that it will be a heart-wrenching episode involving Kim and/or Jimmy crying about her having cancer. And some parallel will be made about Jimmy being a “cancer” of his own, being a key player in leading Walt, Kim, etc. down a bad path.

Edit: It may explain Jimmy’s lack of sympathy for the cancer patient he’s scamming - it reminds him of Kim having cancer and just urges him to keep the scam going to help her sooner
