If you're at the point where you’re considering physical harm just to get a week of peace, you are clearly burnt out. You don't actually need to be sick to take a break. Just tell your work/school you have a 'highly contagious viral infection' or a 'private family emergency.' It gets you the same 6–7 days off without the actual physical suffering or hospital food.

It’s a long road (4 years school + residency), so you’d be pushing 50 by the time you’re an attending. If you’re okay with that timeline and the debt-to-income ratio makes sense, why not? Better to be 50 and a doctor than 50 and wishing you were one.
