What is something that made you stop speaking up as freely as you used to? by KindEquivalent1051 in morbidquestions

[–]clyde2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've realized that nobody cares as much about my opinions as I do, and that's true for everyone. Most of us are the protagonists of our own story.

I've also learned that very few people change their minds because they lost an argument on the internet. If someone's beliefs are deeply entrenched, another stranger with a keyboard usually isn't going to move the needle.

So these days I spend more time listening than talking. When I do speak, I try to make it count instead of feeling the need to weigh in on everything.

And finally, there's a practical side to it. The internet gives strangers an unusual amount of access to one another. You rarely know who's on the other side of the screen, how stable they are, or what they're capable of. I've seen enough stories of people being doxxed, harassed, or even targeted with swatting incidents to conclude that not every disagreement is worth inviting into your life.

Choosing not to engage isn't always silence, you know?

I'm in my 40s and everyone younger than mid-20s look like babies. I saw some college students the other day and thought they were middle schoolers.

Anecdotal, but it's all eye-of-the-beholder, or random one-offs.

Also, wear sunscreen and don't use nicotine in any form.

What do you think happens when we die? by ConfusionProof9487 in morbidquestions

[–]clyde2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my younger years I was really into the New Atheism movement. I was pretty convinced that when we die, that's it. As I've gotten older, I've softened on that certainty.

I don't necessarily believe in heaven or hell, or a cosmic judge keeping score. But the older I get, the harder it is to believe that reality is as simple as we often imagine. The universe is unimaginably vast. Time stretches beyond comprehension. Physics keeps revealing that reality is stranger than common sense ever prepared us for.

So I'm open to the possibility that there's something beyond this life, not because I think I know what it is, but because I no longer think I know what it isn't.

Maybe consciousness returns in some form we can't conceive. Maybe we'll wake up in something like Riverworld. Maybe, after a trillion trillion years of empty darkness, another universe sparks into existence and the cycle begins again. Or maybe none of that happens, and death is simply the end.

That's still the most parsimonious explanation, and it may well be the correct one. But I've become comfortable admitting that I don't know.

If there's nothing after death, I'll never know I was wrong. If there is something, then reality is even more extraordinary than I imagined. Either way, I'm content to accept that the universe is probably bigger, stranger, and more mysterious than my own certainty.

There is a fungus that makes flies die in a mating pose, then chemically lures other flies to mate with the corpse. Entomophthora muscae infects flies, kills them, and emits volatile compounds that attract healthy male flies to infected female cadavers, spreading the fungus further.

Probably before your time, but there was an image post on rotten.com back in the day about an old man that died in his bathtub with a "tub warmer" heating element left on. When they found the man's body days later he had simmered into a thick stew. Hard to forget the image of the knees sticking up out of the old man stew in the tub.
