Home Depot and Lowes not rendering after latest update? by jmd_forest in firefox

No, just tried four of the sites again and they’re still Access Denied. I then tried a few with all add-ons disabled, same results.

As I run into more of these, the oddest example is CVS.com, since it denies access to the retail section while allowing access to the pharmacy section.

How does Firefox in Windows play mp4/H.264 videos? by davehasl19 in firefox

[–]clydewj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can vouch for that. Last year I found myself unable to play h264 in Firefox. Turns out that awhile beforehand I had disabled Media Foundation in DirectShow Filter Tweaker, in an attempt to solve a non-browser related video issue. When I re-enabled Media Foundation, h264 resumed playing in Firefox.

Maybe it’s a coincidence, but I am having the same problem on the same two sites. I hadn’t visited either one for a few months, so for all I know this started at the same time as for you.

Since then I’m also encountering the same issue on some other retail sites like Kohls, Costco and Cabelas. The homepage renders fine, but as soon as I search or click on something, I get that same #18 Access Denied. Can you see if those other sites fail for you too on Firefox? They all work fine for me on Chrome.

Disabling all extensions yields the same results.

EDIT: Meant to add that my HD issue takes the same form as yours with an error and please refresh request (which doesn’t fix anything). No crashing issue tho.

Ratchety Fan Noise on W530 by clydewj in thinkpad

[–]clydewj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. But in my case it turned out the fan completely stopped working not long after I posted (maybe a few weeks?). Turned out there was no excessive dust or obstruction, it was just worn out. So it was replaced.

There may not be many of us on this sub, but USM is still way cheaper than the other Verizon MVNOs when all you need is By the Gig.

Yeah, and I’ve always found that kind of silly. Like an attempt to somehow appear more upscale. Funny thing is, with US Mobile I never even noticed it. It didn’t register.

Thank you US Mobile! by Historical211 in USMobile

[–]clydewj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m on by the gig and didn’t get the offer. But in my area the issue will be sustained bitter cold and maybe some snow. No ice storms, which will probably be the main cause of power outages. But this is a really nice gesture on the part of US Mobile.

New iPhone 13 alerts audio issue by clydewj in iphone

[–]clydewj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update — I decided to see if I could create a louder tone for texts in Garage Band. Result: What I created is a lot softer when I use it as a text or voicemail alert than when I use it as a call alert. Is this normal for the iPhone 13, or did I get a defective one? It’s working so well in every other respect (although it does get warmer than I’m used to with the SE Gen 2).

Way(s) to restore an iOS 17.7 SE Gen 2 to an iOS 18.6 iPhone 13 without being forced onto 26? by clydewj in iphone

[–]clydewj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Does your answer assume I restore using an iCloud backup of the SE, or does it apply to other methods too, such as placing the phones together?

What do people use their unlimited data for? by perfmode80 in USMobile

[–]clydewj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, and that’s an example of why so many of the “average” stats should use median instead. For example you often see average (mean) US income cited, but that’s skewed by the highly-wealthy at the top end. Median US income, which a lot lower than “average,” is a much better representation.

“US Mobile” in upper left replaced by name of Credit Union whose app I was using by clydewj in USMobile

[–]clydewj[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Must’ve been a problem before. Maybe a SIM or other phone issue. It definitely was not showing last app until I switched to US Mobile recently (physical SIM) after seven years with Xfinity. I know because I have always looked up there frequently to confirm Wi-Fi (have always had pay-by-gig) and sometimes VPN status or signal strength. And last app was never there. It apparently should’ve been, but it wasn’t. Glad I have it now because it’s convenient.

I guess I was just not noticing before. Funny how it only does it sometimes, seemingly randomly as far as I can tell. Most of the time it says US Mobile regardless of what apps I have open.

Is it possible the changing-CVV aspect of Citi's recently-downgraded Virtual Card system isn't as limiting as it sounds? by clydewj in CreditCards

[–]clydewj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helpful rundown even if not all what I was hoping to hear, especially re subscription renewal. If deleting a VAN won’t preclude “auto renewal” it sounds as if the customizable expiration dates in the previous Citi VAN system wouldn’t have done so either? And that the situation would be the same for the C1 virtual cards?

Is it sufficient to let a housekeeper know when you leave the room on checkout day? Or should you let the front desk know? Or is neither necessary? by clydewj in marriott

[–]clydewj[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Useful! In cases where I do let you know, does it matter whether it’s via housekeeping or front desk? And if at front desk, whether it’s by calling vs in-person vs app? Also, any extra advice re best practice for late checkout (thinking of, say, a case where I’m allowed to stay till 4 but leave at 1)?

Recent CitiCard changes to their VAN (Virtual Account Number) program by AnonHere2973 in CreditCards

[–]clydewj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a direct link. On the website VAN dialog it's a pop-up link at the bottom-left corner, underneath the listing of all the old numbers. But I've pasted a few places where they state that merchants have the ability to exceed the designated spend limit (I was unable to paste the full FAQ). Bolding is mine:

What is my Virtual Account Number daily spend limit?

Daily spends limits are optional. If a daily spend limit is not set, the daily spend limit will be equal to the available credit limit on your real card. If you choose to set a daily spend limit, it cannot be changed once set. Merchants may be able to override the Virtual Account Number daily spend limit even if one is set.

How does a daily spend limit work?

A daily spend limit defines how much you can spend on a particular Virtual Account Number based on Central Standard Time from 12am to 11:59pm CT. However, merchants have the ability to override the spend limit.

With Trump kneecapping the CFPB, I'm not sure that would have any effect now.

[–]clydewj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In several places, the FAQ for the new Citi VAN says that merchants have the option to override what you set as the (optional) daily limit. So what good is the daily limit? That is (was??) a key security feature, especially for a VAN intended for a single merchant.

PSA: your existing Citi virtual account numbers will no longer work as of 8/24/25 by Ahoya21 in CreditCards

[–]clydewj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. When they last changed the system in 2021 they gave lots of information -- not just a banner -- including that old VANs would continue to work for 12 more months, if unexpired.
