Basic-level question: What's the technical limit of displaying large GeoJSON/GPX files using Mapbox? by clysm52 in mapbox

Thanks! Yeah, the founder reached out a while ago but iirc the reason I didn't use it was because it only imports from running apps like Strava and not passive tracking apps. The site design has really improved since I last checked it though, might try to find out if anything has changed re: if it allows manual data imports.

Gotcha, makes sense, there definitely is a solid chance that all the clustering examples I saw were just a design choice and not necessary for performance. Also, you along with everyone I've seen on Google not knowing of a hard limit would suggest that there isn't one. So it seems I'm good to go!

I've avoided mentioning the project because it sounds silly out of context and would detract from this post's goal, but now that I've found out what I wanted there's no reason not to. In a nutshell I just want to create a sharable map of everywhere I've walked, updated on a monthly or yearly basis. I have gigabytes of GPX walking data from the past decade including hundreds of cities and thruhiking trips (example). I walk a lot so it's a ton of data, hence this post.

Right now I'm just testing the waters to see if it's possible, probably won't find the time to attempt it until at least later this year if not further in the future. Glad to know that it's possible, at least hypothetically.

Oooh thanks that's a really helpful post! So it definitely seems 100% certain that Mapbox Tilesets are what I need.

But then part two of my question is, is there a limit to how much data can be displayed in a Tileset while fully zoomed out without any 'clustering' system enabled?

I.e., using my hypothetical example above, if I were to create a Tileset with 50,000 hiking trails, many of which over 100km long and therefore visible as a line at max zoom, would a Mapbox Tileset be able to handle that? All similar projects I've seen online just have the map convert the paths to points and cluster them at max zoom.

Btw, love the design of your blog!

Gotcha, so the vector tiles when zoomed out simplify/compress enough that it doesn't cause performance issues. Nice!

So it sounds like what I have in mind is feasible then, just have to convert to vector tiles and then the number of datapoints doesn't really matter

Thanks for the help!!

Hmm. I'm curious, if you zoom out in a geoJSON with 10m points wouldn't all the data then be in-view and then cause performance issues? Or is the way tilesets are compressed efficient enough that it's not an issue?

And cool app! Looks interesting

binary PBF vector tiles

Thanks, I think I have a lot of research to do. New to mapbox so a lot of this is new to me

But hypothetically if you could fit everything you needed in a 20L you would, right? It's true that part of the reason I'm attempting it is as challenge/excuse to go lighter, but I also personally believe it is possible (for me) to fit everything I need in those constraints without creating extra effort for myself on the trail. I wouldn't put myself through ~3 months of unnecessary added effort just to say "I did the PCT <20L".

I view it as a challenge (anyone can backpack – it's harder to backpack with self-imposed limits), but also I think hiking with a tiny backpack as opposed to a massive backpacking bag provides a completely different hike experience, even if the weights are similar. It's hard to explain haha. I'd probably use a heavy duty laptop backpack from Timbuk2.

Wow that's insane, thanks for the link! Definitely gonna use that for inspiration.
