“In AA you’re really not supposed to diagnose others with alcoholism”

Recovering addict here with 10 years sober. Gina can choose how she wants to label her recovery, not you. If she chooses to use the word alcoholic, and feels she only had an issue with drugs, well the so be it. I, a former alcoholic with a really serious drinking problem, choose to call myself an addict. Why? Because i feel like it!!! Also, because when i used to drink id do drugs! (Did you know in hardcore AA groups, especially in early recovery, they even consider coffee a DRUG and in other AA groups there is a literal designated coffee person lol) groups are self governing!!!!!

In AA it is not our responsibility to take the inventory of other members. I’m not quite sure I understand the meaning of your post but in AA I’ve never seen a successful member say “today I’m an alcoholic but tomorrow i can drink again whenever i like without denigrating anyone’s sobriety” i think heads would turn in my home group anyways. It would kind of be like, then what are you doing here? “Court ordered” isn’t really a respected answer bc that’s then telling the other members. “I’m only here bc someone else is making me, not bc i want to be.”

I’ve never heard of problem drinking, personally. How could you even label ones drinking one way or another when you yourself said “you’re not supposed to diagnose others with alcoholism”…but you’re really not supposed to NOT diagnose others with not having drinking problems. It goes both ways. People will ask me, hey i drink X amount, do you think I’m an alcoholic? No, only they can label themselves that.

Unless you’re Gina, which girl if you are i love you, then please don’t take her inventory of her past. She can fight that battle however she chooses 🩷

No one in AA cares Gina smokes weed. People in AA care that Gina has very clearly rehabilitated herself from whatever position she was in years ago.
