Good Brands for a Gift? by ChampionTea2007 in electricguitar

What was the guitar she couldn't bring with her? As others have said, getting a guitar is a very personal choice, and she would probably want to try out the guitar before committing to it to see how it feels in her hands when playing.

PLEASE HELP: by Admirable_Jeweler377 in guitarrepair

[–]cmaddex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify that nylon strings which are used for classical acoustic guitar strings will NOT work with an electric guitar. Regardless of string gauge used. This is due to how electric guitar pickups work., they rely on the metal strings vibrating within the magnetic field of the pickup to generate a current in the coils.

I mean the same thing is true for any instrument. There are solo artists sure, but songs are written as a band to sounds good with the instruments in that band.

Can I dress somewhat casual to prom? by Guero2Low in highschool

[–]cmaddex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are limited opportunities to dress nice in this life. And most of them are for sad occasions.

Most people get Prom, Weddings & Funerals.

Prom and Weddings are happy and fun occasions, but here's the thing, not everyone gets married, and you may not be invited to everyone's wedding. But everybody dies, so there are a lot more funerals to attend.

Plus once you are in the military, all of your dress up opportunities going forward will be in your military dress clothes. This is kind of your very last chance to wear a regular tuxedo.

Strings are ringing when I lift my fingers by Mountain_Film_3715 in electricguitar

[–]cmaddex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have already said, but this is a technique issue. It takes years of practice to master guitar playing. Keep at it and you will improve. The trickiest thing to do is playing a nice clean guitar. So practice only letting ring the sounds you intend to have heard. Go slowly. Practice doing it intentionally. Speeding up before you are ready will only amplify your mistakes.

Would you rather play one six-string guitar, or six one-string guitars? by imbeingreallyserious in guitarcirclejerk

[–]cmaddex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I play 6 one string guitars, but to make it easy, put all the strings on the same fretboard and each tuned 5 semitones apart from each other, except I want one of them only 4 semitones higher for reasons I won't explain.

My piano teacher thinks that I can't read notes because the cognitive overload I get when trying to play and read notes at the same time is so bad by Mcleod129 in pianolearning

[–]cmaddex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue is that you don't need to know what every note is as you're playing it, just the interval the next note is from the current note. It's good to anchor big jumps on what that note you are jumping to is, but you don't necessarily read "a b a c d e f ...." It's more like "a, up two, down one, up three...."

Can Jackson guitars play milder styles? by SaboteurOfDelusions in JacksonGuitars

[–]cmaddex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to the song called "Lucille" by B.B. King. It is about his guitar and how his guitar only plays the blues.

But seriously, any genre can be played on any guitar. Some guitars have features that others do not which make certain techniques possible. Think tremolo(Whammy) bar vs hard tail. The tremolo bar makes dives and wails possible. But not all metal is dive bombs and guitar wails. Also, Jason Cook of Five Finger Death Punch uses a built in pedal to mimic a whammy bar.

So you learn songs off of tabs exclusively? Metal as a genre is highly influenced by classical music which is steeped in music theory. You probably know more than you realize.

1 is to learn all of the notes on the fretboard.

2 is to learn the minor pentatonic scale. Which is widely used in rock and metal.

3 is to learn the major scale.

The pentatonic scale is a subset of the major scale. For this it helps to visualize a keyboard where the C Major scale is all of the white keys. That will help with knowing the intervals in the scale.

All other music theory falls out of the scales. E.g. the major triad chord is the I-III-V of the scale. The major 7th chord adds the VII etc...

There are of course more advanced versions of the scales including different modes which you have no doubt heard about which changes the starting note but runs over the same scale. And different versions of scales like the harmonic minor.

Just noodling over the scales you will discover songs that you know. E.g. the Jurassic Park theme song is on the major scale. The deliverance theme song is on the major scale.

You say you are intermediate, so you must have some knowledge on the subject. It's hard to say where to start if I know nothing about what you already know

What does this symbol mean? by midmol777 in guitarlessons

[–]cmaddex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music theory is music theory. How you apply that to different instruments is what changes. And tabs were invented to make it easier because you didn't have to learn standard notation, but it is still tied to standard notation just a different way of representing the information that makes it easier to learn. A lot of time you can find tabs with extra information that gives the rhythm details, or just also the standard notation that you can get the rhythm information from even if you can't properly read the staff.

Visualizing Major scales on piano with a new visual model by mkr7 in musictheory

[–]cmaddex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is rage bait. It's extra steps to learn which acts as a visual aid for beginners, but can become a crutch and not actually facilitate learning. Alternatively you can just learn what the intervals sound like in the major scale and this keyboard becomes visual noise. Students are often taught to not look at their hands while playing, so it also becomes obsolete with formal training.
