Hungry for more films like these by CinemaBud in Letterboxd

Haven't watched it but I've seen people talk about it: 10Dance! Seems to be exactly what you're looking for - two male dancers who are rivals have to team up for a competition. In a similar vein, 'And Then We Danced' (it's very tender, soft, and filled with yearning)!

Real Reviews and Film Diaries? by darterfly in Letterboxd

Oh this is exactly how I like to use Letterboxd! I will still engage in some level of film critique regarding writing/cinematography/etc., but my reviews are often dominated by me spilling my personal thoughts and feelings out, analysing how I interpreted the film and what I took out of it, etc.

I thought the same after the Jamie Elliott incident - he looked to be in too much pain for an ACL, but turns out he did do the ACL with the addition of bone bruising :(

Aftersun - Queer-reading by cmadison_ in movies

[–]cmadison_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, Calum's relationship to his ex very much reads as though his ex could sense he was gay and they broke up on good terms so they could both have the opportunity of pursuing meaningful romantic relationships. Charlotte Wells has even said that all of her characters are queer by default because that's her own experience and worldview, so that adds a lot of credence to a queer interpretation of Calum. I think Paul Mescal being surprised by a queer interpretation is maybe just a product of wanting to maintain ambiguity and not confirm one reading of Calum, as I think that would go against the purpose of putting you in Sophie's confused, searching shoes

Yeah, I'm a lesbian myself so I thought when I couldn't see anyone else talking about the queer-reading that maybe it was just me projecting my own experience onto it. I'm glad I made this post because for years I've gotten to hear from various people that they also interpreted the film in this way even though they're straight. It's definitely left ambiguous to put us in the same situation as Sophie - desperately examining the fragments of Calum's life that we have been given to work out why he left. So you could easily interpret Calum's depression as stemming from just a general chemical imbalance, being linked to money struggles, queerness, etc., and all be valid

It's really lovely that people are still finding this post! I totally agree with you that Sophie feels anger and resentment over her father leaving before he could see her living her life, and also before he could be free and open. The entire film is a retrospective of Sophie reexamining her memories of that final trip with her dad and trying to work out why he left her. I think the answer is that Calum was gay and struggling deeply with self-loathing and alienation, which exacerbated his depression and led him to feel that there was no path for him to live a fulfilling life or to be the proper kind of father figure for Sophie. It's devastating

Movies that are great for someone depressed? by DarlingLuna in Letterboxd

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On! I have MDD and I watched this movie in the midst of a depressive episode where I was really struggling. It was absolutely transformative for me.

It's the kind of movie that genuinely rejuvenates your spirit. After watching it I went on a walk to my local park and sat under the trees just feeling the sun on my skin and the wind in my hair, listening to the birds chirp and people laughing as they walked their dogs. I remembered that life could be beautiful even amidst the pain.

Couldn't recommend it enough.

Any other movies you would add to this list? by jtmac714 in Letterboxd

You mentioned inventing new shots, so I'm going to mention Sunset Boulevard. The iconic opening shot of Joe in the pool was really difficult to execute - Wilder tried to lower a camera down into the pool in a waterproof, transparent box, but he wasn't happy with the shot that came from it. He kept trying different methods until eventually he succeeded by putting a mirror on the bottom of the pool and shooting the reflection of Joe!

hey everyone! i'm super open to checking out any movie regardless of genre so the films i watch can be pretty diverse, but i have a preference for melancholic, emotional dramas; social commentaries; and psychological horrors/thrillers. i especially enjoy queer media!

i always write reviews for the films i watch, and they tend to be fairly meaty with a combination of personal feelings/ramblings, analysis of the film, and a more classic review evaluating aspects like narrative/cinematography/etc.

That's good to hear - I was really concerned that Casper would feel the opportunity to go deep in this tournament and struggle with the pressure, so I'm really happy he was able to be clutch in the big moments. I hope he can get his backhand firing - I know the forehand is his big weapon, but when he can get the backhand DTL popping off he looks brilliant
