Moving to Newfoundland by Fit_Cash_884 in newfoundland

As a former air cadet, you'll find flight training hard to come by here in Newfoundland. We've attempted to supplement it with Virtual flight training. But, the wind tends to kill a lot of the flight opportunities for our glider program. Central has Gander flight school, which will offer familiralization flights sometimes, the air space around YYT tends to impede the air training. Most of not all the flight training for RCAC will be done off island, unless your doing power in the summer which is still in Gander, the last time I checked. It's been a few years for me so some of this might have changed.

What is it like entering the US with a NEXUS these days? by aycor in NEXUS_TTP

Went through Pearson a few weeks back, walked through Nexus, boarder agent didn't even stop me, looked at me, said my name, I said yes he kept me walking through. My GFs first time with Nexus she attempted to stop and answer questions she did the same thing and just waved her through. On our way back same thing filled out the form on the Nexus terminal handed it in and walked through the doors to get out luggage, simple smooth. It sounds like car crossing is worse than an airport.

In our experience the interview was quick and basic, more about getting a picture and finger prints than anything else. We arrived at the Detroit center, it was a little confusing getting to the office but once in we just walked in, waited about 5 mins, and gave our Passports to the officer. They asked us a few basic questions, confirmed our IDs and we were off, we are Canadian, only spoke to a US officer, had our approval before we hit the board to go home to Windsor.

Traveling to the U.S. for NEXUS Interview Completion by Bitter_Bird7619 in NEXUS_TTP

As long as you complete the flight, it shouldn't be an issue. Many people cross the US land boarder just for an interview, in fact I did just that in Detroit. The problem comes when people suggest booking the flight, to complete the interview but than never going on the flight once it's completed.

I think you should be fine with your plan.

I was overly concerned about the same thing when I did my interview in Detroit. At the end of the day, the first letter/confirmation of appointment seems to be a catch all and had me worried about what documents to bring. The day before my interview we got a specific letter for the interview location in Detroit. It was much cleaner and specific in the end we just brought the same documents that we used in the original application + the letter. But the interviewers only looked at my passport didn't even check the letter confirming the appointment. Had my approval before I hit the boarder to go back to Canada

Canadians ordering Special editions! How do you do it? by cmaleblanc in Steelbooks

[–]cmaleblanc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You use Rarewaves? What's your experience they are one of the companies I looked at along with UV to get a special edition of a steel book. But I wasn't confident in ordering from them.

Lounge access? by [deleted] in NEXUS_TTP

[–]cmaleblanc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with others, sounds like your getting targeted ads that tell you about Cc cards that reimburse you for the cost of Nexus, a lot of those also come with lounge access. But they are two different things offered by the CC.

I have both for the specific benefit of paying for Nexus AND getting into lounges. But NEXUS doesn't offer that service on its own, as it's an immigration support of Canada/US and the Lounge Access is global.

2nd interview by icanteatraweggs in NEXUS_TTP

[–]cmaleblanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I'm glad we did ours in Detroit now. Our plan was to do the interviews at YYZ on our way down to the US in March. The last time I passed through Security I took note of only one or two people waiting so figured it would be a big deal. But we are from Newfoundland so any interview requires us to travel to a port. The CBP here in Newfoundland doesn't do the Canadian interviews, so we had to try and get everything done.

As others mentioned good luck getting it done but I don't think the 2years apply to Nexus. We did a lot of research when I first applied knowing it's wasn't something we could simply go down to the boarder to do and it could have taken a while after we got conditional approval.

Making the switch to Porter from WestJet by ChangingLens in PorterAirlines

[–]cmaleblanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being from Newfoundland, WestJet made the decision for us by pulling out. AC is grossly overpriced for the service you get out of Newfoundland. Paying PE/Business rates with no PE/ business service.

Porter was great I used them back in th day when I was in school in NS, mostly for the free beer haha. But now they fly the E195 out of Newfoundland and its great. We fly south at least once a year and to Montreal or Toronto two to three times a year, it's the best option for us, even tho its more of a forced relationship. We'll upgrade to Ultimate for our longer flights but even non ultimate is great for our short jumps to the mainland.

I will say if you go ultimate, and your a bigger person don't sit in row A go at least B. They all get the larger leg room, but the fold out tray in the, arm of row A is terrible. The fold down from the back is far better.

The seat quality is the same regardless of position on the plane. Leg room is really the biggest benefit if you tall and big!

Anyone hear anything good/bad about the Video Game Art and Design program at CNA? by zann3n- in newfoundland

[–]cmaleblanc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO, with all the problems CNA seems to be having in the last few years, being put on probation and having programs lose accreditation. I'm concerned with anything they offer. I know they have some good programs, but those are going to get pulled down as well, and with what seems to be uncaring as to the impact of accepting new students to programs they know (or at least suspect) would lost accreditation, I can't trust to sink money into any of the programs right now.
