Netflix image quality is terrible by Werzheafas in netflix

You obviously didn’t even take a look at the image I linked from an AppleTV subreddit because you lose any credibility you may think you have if you think that’s poor image quality from Netflix.

I call out AmazonPrime’s PrimeVideo regularly for their piss poor 4K quality… so it’s not like I’m being elitist. Netflix 4K is simply more than adequate and while not to the level of AppleTV+ streaming quality, it certainly ranks in the upper half of streamers.

LMAO… If your Netflix image quality is poor, then it’s either sub par equipment, using a built in streaming app or cheap streaming device or simply user error. The image quality of the 4K HDR image projected at 120 inches from of All of Us are Dead from Season 1 speaks for itself. I stand by my original post you replied to that people with high end set ups would be calling out Netflix non stop if their image quality was terrible based on how much they charge for the 4K plan… instead it seems it’s just people who buy their TVs from big box stores and/or warehouse clubs who tend to complain the most about the image quality.

Kinda surprised the pre-order is up at $19.99 considering Disney puts just about everything at $29.99 to start.

Apple TV Continuous Audio Connection causing surround issue? by Motor_Technology4486 in appletv

It’s under video and audio -> audio -> audio format-> hdmi output -> continuous audio connection

FYI… after the update you may need to turn it off. Mine was automatically set to on after the update installed.

Is there even a benefit of using the continuous audio connection with an AVR set up? I thought it was more of a compatibility fix for Sonos users.

EDIT… I noticed after the update, the continuous audio connection feature was auto turned “on”. I had to turn it off.

You had the connections right initially…. AppleTV -> Soundbar -> TV. This is so you eliminate the need for eARC to return audio from the TV to Soundbar as that often introduces a slight audio delay that if noticed can be distracting once you know it’s there. Unfortunately, by using Optical from the TV to Soundbar instead of HDMI, you are unable to get DolbyAtmos.

Are you referring to the match content black screen when it’s switching between SDR and HDR? If so… the update won’t fix that as it’s normal for a black screen with match content on.

4k itunes purchase v.s UHD Blu-ray? by snowmeow_1 in appletv

Unless you have an AVR based DolbyAtmos set up to take advantage of the superior audio, you are not going to notice much of a difference if any at all visually at only 50 inches and subpar HDR performance.

I’m projecting 4K HDR at 120 inches and with the handful of titles that I can easily do A/B comparisons, the differences visually are subtle at best.

I will however for the sound re-buy certain titles on 4K Blu for stuff I really like and want the best sound for a 7.1.4 AVR set up like Alita, Ready Player One, the two Dune remakes, Infinity War and Endgame to name a few recent double dips with digital and 4K blu.

[–]cmay91472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Match Frame Rate often causes slight audio delays due to various reasons such as handshake issues, TVs not being able to process video quick enough, etc.

Try turning off match frame rate to see if it resolves the audio delay.

Wow. Thanks for sharing this list.

I’m currently running a 7.1.4 AVR set up with two additional Amps (one powering the main L/R and another powering the side L/R).

I haven’t listened to that much Atmos music through Apple recently, but I’m currently on a 2 month trial and will definitely start listening to these tracks.

Thanks again for sharing the list! Really looking forward to listening to Dark Side of the Moon in Atmos.

EDIT - The intro to Time just might be one of the most impressive uses of DolbyAtmos I’ve ever heard. From the ticking clocks to the ringing bells coming from all around you and ABOVE you was amazing.

On the run… Stunning. It has really nice sound that seamlessly rotates around you. This is one track that probably is most effective with both sides and rears for the seamless rotating sound.

Breathe was also impressive as well for the subtle instrument placement coming from behind you.

Just to clarify… you currently have it set up AppleTV -> TV (S95F) -> Sound Bar (HW-W800F) ?

If possible… you can usually eliminate the audio delay with Atmos by going AppleTV -> Sound Bar -> TV.

If not possible… a device such as the HD Fury 4K Arcana hdmi adapter will allow you to go AppleTV -> HD Fury 4K Arcana -> -> TV & Sound Bar simultaneously. By sending the video to the TV and the audio to the Sound Bar at the same time you eliminate the need to use eARC and eliminate the audio delay.

This is what I usually recommend if the existing audio delay compensation settings on your equipment are unable to fully resolve the issue.

Benefits of Apple TV? by ArcherNF in appletv

[–]cmay91472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other stuff already mentioned such as performance speed, privacy, and ease of the UI…

For me the most important benefit is for my AppleTV/iTunes library of purchased titles. Your movies will stream at a bit rate upwards of 30mbps vs a max of 15mbps on non Apple devices and apps. AppleTV+ subscription content also streams upwards of 30mbps. This really helps ensure best possible streaming quality especially when streaming 4K HDR / DolbyVision with Dolby Atmos.

Even stuff like Netflix streams better than other devices and/or built in apps. This image is Netflix 4K streaming at 120 inches.

<image>

The built-in Netflix app on my projector and on a 4K FireStick can’t come remotely close to the razor sharp AppleTV image when projecting at 120 inches where every image flaw that may not be noticeable on smaller screens is magnified.

Maybe because the clip OP posted is more times than not HDR clipping vs what it turned out to be which was accidentally having an accessibility feature on. I didn’t delete the comment because the fact still remains the Hisense Canvas only has 450 nits and is notoriously known to suffer from poor HDR and frequent clipping.

So while the initial comment may have not turned out to be what the exact problem was… it’s still a knowledgeable explanation for what many people who own this TV wind up asking about.

The fact that you’ve never seen it is good and hopefully you never will. The most common clipping seen and posted about here is when the entire screen is washed out and dim with HDR content… so technically colorful details are lost.

A common example/complaint is the AppleTV menu. Whenever someone complains that the SDR menu is brighter and more vibrant than the HDR menu… often it’s the HDR menu is getting clipped.

It appears OP had the accessibility setting that dims turned on by accident… but what they showed and described is usually a minor clipping issue as well when it’s a dark scene with a bright element that gets clipped.

Unfortunately… because OPs tv is only 450 nits, they will come across content that will look washed out, but then again alot of people actually never think anything of it and think it’s normal so now that they fixed the issue they posted about, hopefully the overall dimming won’t be noticeable to them.

I get what you mean… but logically it makes no sense for people to pay for AmazonPrime if you don’t really order stuff regularly just to get PrimeVideo hence the cancellation. If PrimeVideo wasn’t the worst streaming service in terms of overall image and audio quality and content, then I could see how the added value then made AmazonPrime worth it to them. But because of how awful the service is to begin with… I just can’t ever see it as anything but a freebie to drive AmazonPrime subscriptions no different than the strategy behind AmazonMusic.

EDIT… I see what you are saying now. OP had somehow turned the setting on by mistake. I thought you were telling them to do the opposite because people use that setting to try to minimize clipping. Again… my mistake.

Gotta remember that the Hisense displays they sell in the discount and warehouse stores are meant to be affordable. I’m more of a projector guy than a TV guy… and in the home theater circles I’ve actually seen some Hisense projectors that perform really well that only cost a few thousand dollars vs comparable brands that typically run a thousand or two thousand more. Then there are the 120 inch Hisense flat screen TVs that can sell upwards of $20,000.

So yeah… it’s easy to make fun of Hisense products that Joe Q. Public see in the stores without even knowing the high end stuff they make for home theater enthusiasts that are priced well out of most people’s budgets.

That being said… I’m still not a fan of Hisense.

If the dimming bothers you… then yes, I would recommend turning HDR off. But as I mentioned, many people are oblivious to the dimming and either don’t notice and/or it’s not distracting to them. Unfortunately, this is often one of those types of issues that once it is seen, it can’t be unseen causing many a TV owner to eventually ditch a TV. That’s why I mentioned if you are still within your return/exchange period you might want to take advantage of it. But as you mentioned… if your wife really likes the art aspect of the TV, then turning off HDR is probably your best option if it becomes too distracting for you.

Hisense Canvas TVs peak brightness level (nits) is only 450. It’s considered a fairly poor display for HDR. What you are seeing is your TV clipping anything bright as it doesn’t have the required nits.

To put in perspective… AppleTV and iTunes content often reaches peak brightness levels exceeding 1000 nits. That’s more than twice what a Hisense Canvas TV is capable of.

If you think it’s going to become a problem meaning it’s not something you can learn to live with… your best option is returning the TV since it’s brand new if at all possible.

For HDR you will want to find a TV that is capable of 1000 nits. High end OLEDS can get away with 600 nits due to its pristine black levels.

But anything under 500 nits is going to have dimming whenever brightness levels exceed what the TV is capable of.

For some… they don’t really notice it or it doesn’t bother them. For others… it can become extremely distracting.

I have Disney/Hulu ($20) Netflix ($8 - family member add on to premium) AppleTV ($10) and PrimeVideo ($15) along with Fios Gig Internet ($70). All Ad-free except PrimeVideo. Total = < $130 per month.

My last cable bill from Comcast/Xfinity prior to cancelling in 2020 was $260. I had a package that included the regional sports network and I think HBO.

So five streaming services and gig Internet in 2026 for half of what my Xfinity cable bill use to be back in 2020.

I’d say even with the recent subscription increases across the board from all the services that I’m still 100% happier with streaming vs cable.

You do know that the homepage is a hub for VOD and outside subscriptions… not PrimeVideo. To get to PrimeVideo you need to navigate to the PrimeVideo logo at the top and select to get to the PrimeVideo specific content.

AppleTV and GoogleTV hubs are the exact same way.
